Conservative American activist and Donald Trump-ally Charlie Kirk has died after being shot during an appearance at an event at Utah Valley University.
The 31-year-old, who is the co-founder of the MAGA youth group Turning Point USA, was hosting a Q&A event at the university on Wednesday on his “American Comeback Tour” in front of roughly 3,000 people when a single bullet was fired and fatally struck him in the neck. Kirk was rushed to a nearby hospital soon after where he later died, authorities stated.
Videos circulating on social media capture the chaotic aftermath of the shot, with attendees heard gasping and screaming, while many can be seen running from the scene in a state of panic.
President Trump later announced his death on his Truth Social platform, saying: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us,” Trump wrote. “Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
In a later video message, he said: “I am filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk.
“He inspired millions and tonight all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror.”
Utah Governor, Spencer Cox, called the shooting a “political assassination.”
“This is a dark day for our state,” Cox said at a press conference. ‘It’s a tragic day for our nation.”
Two individuals were initially taken into custody in connection with the shooting but have since been released. The suspected shooter remains at large with the manhunt underway.
“The investigation is ongoing but I want to make it crystal clear right now to whoever did this, we will find you,” Cox added. “We will try you, and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law.
