Album Review: "Montevallo" by Sam Hunt

Country newcomer, Sam Hunt sparks controversy with his debut album “Montevallo”

Country newcomer Sam Hunt is notorious for stretching the term “country” with his carefully constructed fusions of cross-genre hits.

His debut album, Montevallo stretches the definition a little further with its R&B and pop formations heard on tracks like “Single in the Summer” and “Take Your Time.”

The album kicks off with “Take Your Time” and leads into his hit single “Leave the Night On” which immediately introduces his daring style.

Sirius XM radio smash “Raised On It” is a highlight on the album that comes together neatly despite his risky fusions.

“Yeah, we were raised on it / Worked hard and played on it / We had it made on it / We were born and raised on it,” Hunt sings.

Although his appreciation for hip-hop and R&B are evident in his own work, Hunt makes it a point to tell Rolling Stone Country that he is in fact— country.

“I do think I’m country, but your definition of that word might be different from my definition. In my opinion, country music, the sound of country, has always evolved. But the one thing that has not changed is the story element. And I think country songs are truthful songs about life written by country people,” Hunt told Rolling Stone Country.

“Ex to See” is perhaps the most creative track on the album with heart-tugging lyrics. The song is a creative track about being used to impress another guy in which Hunt sings, “I ain’t no fool, you rascal you / You don’t want me, you just want your ex to see, ex to see.”

“House Party” is the most organic track on the album with deeper country sounds despite the added effects that heighten the mood.

All-in-all, Montevallo is a compilation of country smash hits and Top 40 chart-toppers that has and will continue to put Hunt into the on-going controversy of country vs. bro-country.

New Beyoncé Tracks Leaked Early

Beyonce’s platinum edition box set of her self-titled album, Beyoncé: Platinum Deluxe that releases early this week and two songs from the release dropped late last week making Bey fans feel blessed just a little bit early.

Earlier this month, Bey’s team shared that the limited edition box set would feature two new singles, and four unreleased remixes with collaborators Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and Pharrell Williams and one unannounced feature. The two singles that were recently leaked were Bey’s new tracks “7/11” and a snippet of “Ring Off.”

“Ring Off” is a track that is sure to send news hubs reporting that Bey’s marriage to rapper Jay-Z is on the brink of disaster with lyrics like, “Until you had enough, then you took that ring off/You took that ring off/ So tired of the lies and trying and fighting and crying/ You took that finger.”

However, that isn’t the case. The 70s soul-sampling track, “Ring Off” is actually a creatively constructed track of reminiscent pain and an uplifting ode that tells the story of her mother’s broken marriage to her father.

“Mama, I understand your many sleepless nights. When you think about father/and how you tried to be the perfect wife…I wish it didn’t hurt at all,” Bey sings.

Beyoncé: Platinum Deluxe is now available for download on iTunes.

Justin Bieber x Cody Simpson Release Debut Track "Home to Mama"

This past September Justin Bieber and Cody Simpson announced that they were spending time in the studio on a joint album and they recently gave fans a preview of what they’ve been working on with the release of their track “Home to Mama” following the Australian singer’s tweet to Justin Bieber that read, “Aye @justinbieber you wanna give them a little something later today?” accompanied by the cover art for the single.

The two originally met years ago through their shared manager, Scooter Braun and have been spotted working together in recent months.

The track is an acoustic ballad about finding a gem that is worth taking “home to mama.” Lyrics include, “I’ll take you home to mama, and let you meet my friends…. Cause you don’t come with drama, girl I’ll love you till the world ends.”

The cover art for the single features Bieber and Simpson wearing hats and strumming their guitars outside of a dimly lit cabin. The track is the first from their collective album entitled, 2 Guitars and was released exclusively on Bieber and Simpson’s fan clubs through the Fahlo app.

Although the song isn’t clear on whether it’s an ode to Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid or the two with lyrics like, “I don’t work hard when its easy, I put in work when its hard, girl I never believed in love till I had yours/ This is more than a season, and I’m not just sprung, I’m not afraid to tell ya, that you are the one,” the song received positive feedback from fans and lovers alike.

Eminem Set to Release Compilation Album, "Shady XV"

Eminem is making headlines yet again with recent news of his highly anticipated greatest hits compilation album entitled Shady XV which is set to release on Nov. 24.

The album will feature his latest track, “Detroit Vs Everybody” which carries features from a variety of Detroit talent that includes Big Sean, Dej Loaf, Danny Brown, Royce da 5’9” and Trick Trick.

“Detroit Vs. Everybody” gets its name from an iconic Detroit clothing brand and is a fierce track that showcases the spirit of Detroit through local-gone-national talent.

“Detroit Vs. Everybody is the third lead single from the compilation album, others include “Guts Over Fear” featuring Sia and Slaughterhouse’s “Y’all Ready Know.”

The two-disc compilation will contain one disc of hits like “Lose Yourself,” while the second disc contains a slew of new material, “Detroit Vs Everybody” among the list of new tracks to be released. Other collaborations on the album will include fellow Detroiter Kid Rock, 50 cent, Nate Dogg among many others.

Another collaboration expected on the album is Yelawolf, a 35-year-old rapper from Alabama who has had the support of Eminem since his early days. According to Yelawolf, to have songs featured on Shady XV is an honor.

“It’s an honor, man. There’s nobody like him. And there never ever, ever will be again. To share the stage and to help me out, and to embrace me as a member is top shelf. There is no better feeling in the entire world than to have someone say ‘Yeah, I back this guy’,” he told MLive.

Shady XV comes just a year after his latest album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2 released this time last year.

Interview: Jake Miller Talks "First Flight Home," "Lion Heart" and more.

Since turning down college to pursue music full-time, Jake Miller has been soaring high since his move from YouTube to Warner Bros. Records.

The Weston, Florida native released his debut album Us Against Them last year peaking in the top five of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Rap Albums and Independent Albums and recently released his single “First Flight Home” followed by his EP Lion Heart.

Inspired by the likes of Drake and Eminem, Miller manages to stun fans with his rap verses and often finds himself swaying between rapper and pop singer, a natural playing field for the singer-songwriter who notes the music he produces comes from whatever he’s feeling at the time whether that’s a go-hard rap verse or a light-hearted positive pop song chorus.

His latest single, “First Flight Home” is chart-topping potential with its smooth pop chorus, heartfelt lyrics about taking a break from fame to return home to the people he loves the most. The song debuted on MTV alongside its official music video which can be viewed here.

“First Flight Home” is a track off of Miller’s latest EP Lion Heart released earlier this month. Miller recently co-hosted the 2014 MTV EMA’s and is currently on tour with the iHeartRadio On The Rise tour with Becky G.

We caught up with Miller at his Detroit show and talked about his latest EP, “First Flight Home” and his rise to fame. Check out the interview below.

Taylor Swift Announces 1989 World Tour to Support Record Breaking Album

It’s hard to hate Taylor Swift even if you aren’t a fan of her music.

The blonde beauty’s charismatic personality and love for her fans are reason enough to love the chart-topping songstress who just released her first full pop album, 1989.

Aside from the secret sessions Swift hosted which consisted of house parties with fans who she personally invited, shared baked goods and an intimate and exclusive listening of the full album firsthand before anyone else along with her recent stop at a senior picture photo shoot in Central Park, Swift has been making headlines for all the right reasons.

Having celebrated the biggest album release week of 2014, Swift recently announced The 1989 World Tour which kicks off on May 20 in Louisiana and visits 57 stadiums and arenas throughout North America and Europe. Despite the extensive tour, more dates are to be added that will include additional North American dates along with dates in Australia set for the later part of 2015.

Lorde Unleashes Haunting "Yellow Flicker Beat" Music Video

New Zealand-bred singer-songwriter Lorde celebrated her 18th birthday on Nov. 6 and surprised fans by releasing the official music video for the first single, “Yellow Flicker Beat” from the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1 soundtrack that she curated.

Lorde first released the track back in September on Tumblr where she noted, “It’s my first offering from what I hope will be a soundtrack you love. It’s my attempt at getting inside her head, Katniss’. I hope you like it.”

Though the track is completely unrelated to the Hunger Games, the video directed by Emily Kai Bock features the songstress all over the place. She is first seen singing in a variety of haunting locations ranging from a motel room to an empty road and later beside a swimming pool and at a glam party where she takes a fall from a superficial cliff.

“Yellow Flicker Beat” is one of four of the songstress’ features on the movie soundtrack that will also feature collaborations from Charli XCX and Simon Le Bon, The Chemicals brothers and Miguel in addition to other features from Kanye West and more.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1 soundtrack is set to release on Nov. 17 just four days before the highly anticipated film hits the box office worldwide on Nov. 21.

Selena Gomez Opens Up In New Single "The Heart Wants What It Wants"

Selena Gomez premiered her new single and video, “The Heart Wants What It Wants” on Nov. 6.

The track is one of three unreleased songs from her Greatest Hits Collection, For You set to release Nov. 24.

Gomez revealed to On Air with Ryan Seacrest that the emotionally charged love song is about none other than longtime lover, Justin Bieber.

When asked about her controversial relationship with the heartbreaker, Gomez noted that everybody will form their own opinions anyway and gave Seacrest some insight to her perspective.

“I support him. I think I always will. I’m upset when he’s upset, I’m happy when he’s happy. I don’t want anything bad to ever happen to him. It hurts me. That’s all,” Gomez told Seacrest about her romance.

The songstress shared that the biggest problem she’s faced this year extends beyond her on and off again relationship with the heartthrob, and has been a rather personal battle.

“I think the biggest problem I had this year is identity,” Gomez shared. “I was trying to figure out what I’m doing, and that was the first time I was constantly being kicked down for doing that.”

According to Gomez, Bieber saw the video a year ago noting it was “beautiful.” Additionally, BFF Taylor Swift also previewed the track prior to its release.

“She loved it. She’s very dramatic and I love her so much,” said Gomez. “She came over to the house, and I played it. She had headphones in, and she watched the video, and then she just looked at me, then she looked back, and then played it three times over and over again. And I’m like, ‘I want to know,’ and she was like, ‘Oh my God. This is amazing. I’m so excited for you.'”

According to Gomez, the video which was shot over a year ago features raw footage of the songstress standing in front of a mirror, reflecting on her life in that moment.

“I shot the video [for “The Heart Wants What It Wants”] over a year ago. So, in that state – where I was in that place emotionally – I went into the room by myself, and I looked at the actual mirror in the music video, and I had a conversation [with] myself to every question I had in my mind in that moment.”
