Robyn Gardner went missing on August 2, 2011 in the same Aruban town which Natalee Holloway went missing on a high school graduation trip.

The 35-year-old was on vacation in Aruba when she was reported missing by her travel companion, Gary Giordano. Giordano claimed she was swept out to sea while the two were snorkeling.

Gary Giordano is the sole suspect in the case of Robyn Gardner’s disappearance. However, he was never charged due to lack of evidence. He was jailed in Aruba for only four months before he was let go. Giordano returned to MD where he filed a claim with an insurance company for the $3.5 million life insurance policy he had taken out on Gardner.

A search was conducted for Robyn Gardner but her body was never found.

Friends and family of Gardner congregated in a small Frederick, MD. art gallery on Wednesday to mark the one year anniversary of her disappearance. This service was not a memorial, but rather a vigil.

Friend and organizer Christina Jones said, “The idea is to have a vigil for someone who is missing with the hopes that she’s possibly still alive.”

The family and friends of Natalee Holloway can relate to this case like few can. Natalee Halloway’s father had his daughter declared legally dead last year.

Both the families of Natalee Holloway as well as Robyn Gardner continue to search for answers in the disappearance of their daughters.
