Initially teased during “The Ultimate Fighter” season 10 finale on Spike TV, the first full details about THQ’s and Yuke’s UFC Undisputed 2010 will be revealed during the Spike TV “Video Game Awards” ceremony on Saturday, December 12th at 8:00 p.m. EST. According to a press release issued by THQ, a video trailer for the game will be displayed sometime during the show and a top UFC fighter will provide commentary.
Not a whole lot is known about UFC 2010, but already inside sources are pointing towards a number of drastic improvements that will make the game more authentic. For instance, in a report made by Fighters Only Magazine, a source told them:
“There’s been a lot of improvements made, particularly in relation to issues that fans raised after playing the first game. Collision detection has been improved, the way the ground game operates has been improved. There will be changes to the way submission escapes work, many fans felt it was too strength-based. And didn’t reflect the real-life skills of certain fighters.”
“There will also be new features to the career mode, with players finding that their fighter attracts media attention as he climbs the rankings. And there will be a wider range of options for customizing the characters you build.”
UFC 2009 Undisputed brought the MMA fighting franchise back into the world of video games after a number of incredibly disappointing installments on the Xbox and PlayStation 2. Unlike its predecessors, UFC 2009 was warmly embraced by fans and critics alike, with a Metacritic rating of 84 percent. Strong sales during its launch in May made it the best selling title of that month.
Evidently, sales remained consistently positive because UFC president Dana White announced that a sequel was already being planned only a few short months later.
When UFC 2010 is slated to be released is unknown, but given the UFC’s history of counterprogramming, don’t be surprised if launches in close proximity to another rival MMA fighting video game, EA Sports MMA. White has publicly denounced EA Sports for attempting to break into the genre and even went as far as to threaten to blacklist any fighter that signed with them.
But despite White’s attempt to scare prospects away from EA Sports MMA, the video game has already managed to assemble a respectable roster that includes talent like Fedor Emelianenko, Jason “Mayhem” Miller...and even current UFC fighters like Randy Couture and Frank Trigg.
Our Take
I loved UFC 2009 and I’m sure I’ll love UFC 2010. From what I’ve seen of EA Sports MMA though, publishers THQ and developers Yuke’s have their work cut out for them. UFC 2009 was a tremendous first effort, but they’re going to have to step up their game if they want to remain competitive.
