Fibonacci sequence has the 'Touch'

The math may be off, but the new show on Fox is a hit from the start.

The Fibonacci sequence is the never-ending string of numbers at work in the Fox series Touch.

The Fibonacci sequence is a series of integers mentioned in a book by Leonardo of Pisa (Fibonacci) in 1202 as the answer to an ancient arithmetic problem. The series begins with zero, and naturally progresses to one. The series becomes 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, and so on into infinity. In the Fibonacci sequence, each number is added to the previous to make the next.

In the series Touch, starring Kiefer Sutherland, one of the central characters is an autistic 11-year-old boy. The boy, Jake, and his dad are about to be separated by Social Services when Jake, who has never spoken a word, begins to communicate with his father through numbers.

Jake seems to be highly in tune with how numbers relate to the Universe, but are the references to the Fibonacci sequence in Touch based on fact? Dr. Keith Devlin, a mathematician at Stanford University says no.

According to Dr. Devlin, many of the references to the Fibonacci sequence are falsehoods that are frequently repeated about the mystical sequence. Other than citing the wrong century in which Fibonacci published his work (though the show was only off by a few years, really), and citing Fibonacci as the actually discoverer of the sequence (it is not clear whether Fibonacci ever investigated the sequence thoroughly), Danny Glover’s character in Touch says that the sequence can be found in the curve of a wave, the spiral of a shell, and in the segments of a pineapple.

Ok, the Fibonacci sequence does not explicitly exist in those objects, but when plotted the numbers of the Fibonacci sequence spiral around each other, they do resemble a wave or a conch shell, and several other things occurring in nature.

Are the mathematical errors in Touch going to affect how people watch it? Most likely not.

Touch plays upon the idea of the increasingly Small World, and the idea that everything happens for a reason. It’s about a father’s love for his son, and about finding new ways to communicate with family after all communication has failed. It’s an elemental human interest story that uses math and numbers and mysteries of the Universe as conduits for story lines.

Trisomy 18 can't stop the Santorums

The GOP candidate’s daughter Bella was released from the hospital late Monday night, and has already won many battles against the disorder.

Trisomy 18 is the genetic disorder that had GOP candidate Rick Santorum’s 3-year-old daughter in the hospital this weekend. Today, Bella Santorum is heading home, and her dad is taking some time off this morning to help her get settled.

Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards syndrome, is caused by a chromosomal defect. It occurs in about 1 of every 3000 live births. According to the Trisomy 18 Foundation, issues caused by Trisomy 18 are associated with complications that are more potentially life-threatening in the early months and years of life. Half of the babies carried to term will be stillborn. Only 10 percent survive to their first birthdays. But a small number of adults, usually girls, with Trisomy 18 are living into their twenties and thirties.

Rick Santorum did not campaign on Monday, so he could be with Bella in the hospital. Santorum had taken five days off to celebrate Easter and spend time with his daughter. Santorum has talked in the past about how Trisomy 18 has affected his entire family and how they did not expect Bella to survive her first year of life. A cold can bring her close to death.

But studies have shown that more and more children are surviving to older ages like Bella Santorum. According to the study, published by Dr. Chris Feudtner, more than a third of hospitalizations for Trisomy 18, and the closely related Trisomy 13, over the past 15 years were for children more than a year old. In more than 10 percent of cases, the child was beyond age 8.

Santorum cancelled his first two campaign appearances scheduled for Tuesday morning but added a stop in Gettysburg, Pa. in the afternoon. Tuesday night Santorum will head to Lancaster, Pa. for a “conversation on faith, family and American values,” as his campaign has called it.

As the Santorums have fought the uphill battle for survival against Trisomy 18, Rick Santorum vows to bring that same gumption to the battle for the GOP nomination.

Mitt Romney is well ahead of Santorum in the race, and he even told Mike Huckabee on his radio show, “It’s kind of hard for anyone to get the delegates to pass me at this stage, so it looks pretty good.”

Kurt Cobain is remembered on the anniversary of his death

Kurt Cobain died 18 years ago today.

Kurt Cobain passed away 18 years ago today, and Nirvana fans are looking back at his too-short life.

Kurt Cobain rocked the music world, and not in the rock n’ roll sense. He literally shook up the music scene in the early 1990s. As grunge took over the Top 40 list, Kurt Cobain skyrocketed to stardom.

Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home on April 8, 1994, several days after he had committed suicide with a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

Kurt Cobain and Nirvana emerged into the music scene when glam pop, heavy metal, and bands built on well-calculated formulas had alternative music fans begging for something fresh. What they got was something dirty, dark, and awesome.

Nirvana formed in Washington state in 1987 where the band quickly established itself in the Seattle grunge scene. In 1990 Nirvana signed with DGC Records, with whom they began recording their first major label album Nevermind.

Kurt Cobain was the filthy essence of the wrinkly-flannel covered early 90s. His long, greasy blond hair and scruffy face gave sexy a new look. His rough powerful voice put a unique spin on the punk sound that ruled the alternative scene before the grunge movement.

Kurt Cobain died at age 27, making him one of the most famous members of the 27 Club, and also causing the meme to stick. He joined musical greats Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morison, Brian Jones and Robert Johnson, and the newest addition to the 27 club Amy Winehouse.

It’s believed Kurt Cobain committed suicide because he was unable to cope with his fame and “rock star” public image. He left behind is wife, Courtney Love, and their daughter Frances Bean Cobain.

Masters tournament underway at Augusta National

Stenson sets the pace, Tiger lags behind in sixth

The Masters has more eagles than the Decorah Eagle Cam as golfers vie for the green jacket at Augusta.

Paul Lawrie, former British Open champion, eagled the par-five 13th and par-five 15th, while Henrik Stenson stayed ahead in the Masters with an eagle on the par-five second and the par-five eighth. After 10 holes, Stenson was six under par.

Lawrie commented on the greens at the Masters, saying, “The greens are in fantastic condition and rolling pretty well. This course is all about the speed and patience and I struggled with that on the front nine but then I got it in the back nine.”

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, a Masters favorite, is out to get his fifth green jacket at the Augusta National. Woods hasn’t had a major victory since the 2008 U.S. Open, before his marital troubles made headlines. He is currently tied for sixth place with Padraig Harrington, Stewart Cink and Aaron Baddeley.

Woods’ first tee shot knocked straight into a tree, and his second splashed into a creek—both cringe-inducing sounds that are familiar to the lay-golfer’s ears.

Tiger made up for his rough start at the Masters by making par on those first two holes and birdies on holes three and eight. He had a bogey on seven but eventually struggled his way back into the red numbers. Woods made the turn at one under, trailing Stenson by five.

Unfortunately for Masters competitors, the course was drenched with rain Tuesday and Wednesday, and more thunderstorms were forecast for Thursday afternoon. But, dry air is expected to move south to set up perfect golf weather for the remainder of the 2012 Masters.

Luckily for the golfers at the Masters, the greens at Augusta National drain very well. In fact, the marble-like surfaces play slower, and golfers can be aggressive with their putts. Tee shots are more likely to stick than to roll, but the short game is where games are won.

Spectators will have the perfect weather at Augusta this weekend to observe the final weekend of the 2012 Masters.

Buford, Wyoming is hitting the auction block today, and the highest bidder will walk away with the smallest town in America. The 10 acres of land comes complete with a cell phone tower, trading post, gas pump and one resident. You even get your own ZIP code with purchase.

The resident, Don Sammons, is the one selling the town. He moved there with his family in 1980 and took over the convenience store, the Buford Trading post, in 1992. His family slowly moved away over the years, and now he is selling the little town.

Buford, Wyoming may be little, but it’s had a pretty big life. It is the second oldest town in the state. Butch Cassidy robbed a store in Buford, Wyoming in the 1880s, apparently before meeting up with the Sundance Kid. President Grant stopped by one time, too.

Buford, Wyoming isn’t always desolate. Sure, there’s the brutally cold winters, but in the summer time as many as 1000 visitors pass through a day. They aren’t coming to stay, though. Buford, Wyoming is settled between Cheyenne and Laramie, so visitors are typically passing through on their way to the big city.

The auction lot includes five buildings, including a three-bedroom house, a 1900s cabin now used as a tool shed, the gas station, the trading post and a school house built in 1905.

If you want the town’s snowplow, you’ll have to pay extra. It’s going to auction separately.

Ryan Gosling to the rescue

He can save my life any day.

Ryan Gosling. He’s talented. He’s sexy, and now, he’s a hero for the second time.

The Twitterverse exploded Wednesday when word got out that Ryan Gosling had saved a British journalist from being hit by a car.

Laurie Penny said she was thinking about an article she was writing and forgot to look the right way before stepping into traffic.

“I was crossing 6th avenue in a new pink wig. Not looking the right way because I am from London. Ryan Gosling grabbed me away from a taxi,” Penny tweeted.

Penny said she was thankful that Ryan Gosling was there to help her, but with the onslaught of media attention, she decided to write an article for NYC’s gossip blog Gawker.com.

“I am grateful to the dashing and meme-worthy Mr. Gosling, just as I am grateful to every other kind New Yorker who has saved me from oncoming traffic in recent weeks, good citizens making the streets of this fine city that much safer for random British writers who can’t remember to look both ways,” Penny wrote.

Oh, Ryan Gosling. Laurie Penny may think this is just another day in Manhattan, but your heroics make the rest of us swoon even more than the Ides of March did- and that starred you and George Clooney.

Maybe Ryan Gosling was just doing his duty as a citizen of New York, but it wasn’t the first time he came to the rescue. Video surfaced last August of Ryan Gosling breaking up a street fight in New York. It seems he just always happens to find himself in the right place at the right time.

Move over Batman. Ryan Gosling is saving the citizens of Gotham now.

Chicago Cubs home opener reveals new features at Wrigley

Will this be the year of the Cubs?

Chicago Cubs fans are enjoying opening day at Wrigley Field, and hoping that this will be their year.

The Chicago Cubs home opener is today, and Owner Tom Ricketts is hopeful for the season.

Ricketts said in a statement released today, “This off-season, I believe, will be remembered as a turning point in the history of the Cubs… you will see a team that is well prepared, well coached and willing to play every game as if it is the seventh game of the World Series. As a Cubs fan, I have never been more confident in our future. And our future begins today.”

Bill Murray will throw the first pitch at the Chicago Cubs game today, and is also expected to sing during the 7th inning stretch. Murray is from the Chicago area and a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.

There are a lot of changes at the home of the Chicago Cubs this year. Wrigley Field received a lot of renovations in the off season. Fans will be able to enjoy the new Budweiser patio in right field. The patio seats 150 people and the $125 tickets include all you can eat and drink admission.

A new LED board has replaced the 75-year-old one, and the Chicago Cubs are reportedly very excited about the new technology. The board is supposed to provide fans with more information about the game.

The Chicago Cubs will welcome Roger Waters and Brad Paisley in concerts at Wrigley this summer.

Ricketts’ family has invested between $12 and $15 million in the renovations to Wrigley Field.

With all these changes to the building, and the overhaul of management in the offseason, Chicago Cubs fans will notice a lot of differences on opening day.

Will this be the year that the Chicago Cubs break their 104-year streak and win it all? If not, Cubs fans know best that there is always next year.

Maundy Thursday solemnly observed worldwide today

Today marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, and the fifth day of Holy Week in Christian Calendars.

Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, is being observed all over the world today.

Maundy Thursday is the Christian holy day, falling on the Thursday before Easter. Maundy is also called washing of the feet and is a religious rite observed by several Christian denominations. Maundy Thursday honors the Maundy and Last Supper of Jesus with the Apostles.

Maundy Thursday “celebrations” contrast with the joyous Easter celebrations that will happen Sunday. The day follows Spy Wednesday—the day, in which Judas betrayed Jesus.

According to the Bible, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples before they shared the Passover meal. This was an act of service similar to shining shoes. By washing their feet, Jesus “showed them the full extent of his love.”

In many denominations, Christians practice foot-washing ceremonies on Maundy Thursday to demonstrate love through humble service.

In addition to foot-washing ceremonies, many churches hold special Communion services because the practice of Communion comes from the events of the Last Supper as they are written in the Bible. Similarly, many congregations observe traditional Passover Seder meals.

Maundy Thursday also initiates the Easter Triduum, also known as The Three Days, which recalls the passion, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The Triduum begins with the liturgy on Maundy Thursday and ends with the evening prayer on Easter Sunday.

Google Project Glass develops the look of the future

Google Project Glass gives us a glimpse of the future.

The Google Project Glass concept has been revealed, and it looks a lot like something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie. Think a combination of a smart phone, visor and eyeglasses. The Google team will be developing the technology for Google Project Glass, also being called “Google Goggles” in the coming months.

Google says that Project Glass was started to build technology that allows the consumer to “explore and share” their world and to put them back in the moment.

Google Project Glass will ultimately develop a device that has the capability to display messages, chats, appointments, weather and maps—all within your field of vision. Although it is still in the early stages of development, Google Project Glass engineers are beginning to use prototypes outside of the lab.

Google employees will test the Google Goggles in the real world to determine how they can best be used. Google is also getting input from you and me.

On the Google Project Glass site, the first post stated, “We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We’d love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?”

Although a release date for the final product of Google Project Glass has not been announced, tech sites have speculated that we could see Google Goggles on the streets by 2012’s end.

Instagram for Android has been long-awaited by those who have longingly watched their iPhone-user counterparts upload artsy phone pictures since 2010.

An exact release date was expected for the Instagram for Android app, but the 430,000 Android users on the waiting list are finally appeased with the new photo app.

Instagram is a popular photo-sharing app originally created for iPhone. It has several features to quickly give your photo an arty, nostalgic look. It’s like changing lenses with the tap of a finger.

Instagram has a social networking component that allows you to see your friends’ recently uploaded pictures, and you can also share your photos on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr, etc., etc., etc.

Instagram for Android is compatible with smartphones running Android 2.2 and up. Android and iPhone users can once again live in harmony now that there is no more Instagram envy causing a rift between us.
