National Grouch Day: Top Ten Grouches of All Time

Go ahead and put on your brightest frown, its no smiles on national grouch day as we count down the top ten grouches

Juliette Geller

Happy Grouch Day everyone! That’s right, today October 15, 2009 is National Grouch Day. So let’s all forget to tip our waiters, eat all of our roommate’s food, and blame whomever for whatever. I mean, today is the one day where you don’t have to fake a smile to that random person you always seem to run into around campus. You can even let one go in the elevator and have no shame.

So in honor of National Grouch Day, it seems only necessary to acknowledge the top 10 grouches of all of time. Let’s start with the obvious…

1. The Grinch

With a heart “two sizes too small,” it’s not wonder he tries to ruin Christmas for the whole town of Whoville. With his only friend, his dog, Max the Grinch attempts to deprive the town of their Christmas presents and decorations in the hopes of “preventing Christmas from coming.” With his creepy long fingers, and cat like features, this bitter creature has remained the top Grouch of all time for many generations.

2. Larry David

Lacking the most basic social awareness and understanding, this grouch has become famous for unintentionally creating socially awkward moments in the most hilarious of fashion. Whether it’s making inappropriate remarks on race, or sexuality, Larry David has successfully managed to create another show, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, that revisits many of the similar neurotic themes from “Seinfeld.” With appearances from Jason Alexander and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” has graced us with that same awkward, witty humor we miss on Seinfeld.

3. Kate Gosselin

She has been deemed a control-freak, a ball-buster, and a bad mother. With eight kids to raise, it is no question that the reality star mom has a short temper. Some of it is understandable. I mean, her husband is draining their mutual bank account for those stylish Ed Hardy shirts and his 21-year-old pot smoking girlfriend. Kate Gosselin recently went on “The Jay Leno Show” and appeared in a spoof about her being a controlling mother.

In the skit, she scolds the paparazzi for trying to take her picture and another for having food on his face. Her signature scowl and constant badgering have made her a household name. The world can’t seem to get enough of this grouch.

4. Kanye West

I feel as if I do not need to merit this entry with a description explaining why this artist is a grouch. But I will humor you.  We all saw the 2009 VMAs where West so rudely tried to upstage a 19-year-old country singer Taylor Swift on her win for Best Female Video.

West jumped on stage as Swift was accepting her win and shouted into the microphone that Beyonce had one of the “best videos of all time.” Swift left the stage speechless, while the audience was left stunned. This is just one of the many crazy stunts West has pulled. Whether he is constantly claiming the whole world is racist, or complaining that he did not win an award, West is without a doubt a grouch.

5. Kenley Collins

The season 5 “Project Runway” designer did not win the show however did leave a lasting impression on viewers. With her 1940s-looking style and whiney voice she managed to become a finalist, but these days she is doing a lot more to get attention. Collins was arrested back in March for allegedly attacking a male with a laptop.

Previous reports claimed that Collins attacked her ex-fiancé with her cat, water, the aforementioned laptop, and several apples. She has been charged with harassment and two counts of assault. But honestly, given how she talked smack to Tim Gunn, does this development surprise anyone?

6. Shannen Doherty

The “90210” star has always been the center of attention do to her reputation of being a “bad girl."The actress has reportedly been in multiple altercations with other female celebrities, and, because of her reputation, was placed at number ten on the E! show, “50 Most Wicked Women of Prime Time.”

She has left shows like “Charmed” and “90210” for no real reason. Sure, many reports have speculated that she was fired, but nothing has been confirmed. In 2001, she was sentenced to either ten days in jail or twenty days of work-release duty, three years probation, and a fine of $1500 for drunk driving. She has come along way from Brenda Walsh, but she still seems to make headlines for her grouchiness.

7. Mel Gibson

It goes without saying that Mel Gibson deserves to be acknowledged on this list for National Grouch Day. Who can forget his DUI arrest in 2006 where he supposedly made anti-Semitic comments to a Jewish police officer saying things like, “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”

Gibson is known for his ultraconservative political and religious views. He has even been quoted as saying in a 1995 Playboy interview that men and women aren’t equal and that feminists don’t like him and he doesn’t like them. Whatever the case for his grouchiness may be, this grouch is known more for his rude comments and drunken behavior than his movies.

8. The Stepsisters from Cinderella

Apparently, these Disney sisters have names, Drizella and Anastasia, that I honestly I do not think anyone knew until right now. I can honestly say I did not know until about five minutes ago. Anyway, these two evil stepsisters have molded the idea that step-siblings are wicked and are going to make you clean their room or try to steal your boyfriend.

9. Grumpy from Snow White

The name says it all.

10. Naomi Campbell

This model has a record of lawbreaking and grouchiness as long as her legs. Let’s recap, in 2000 she plead guilty to assaulting her assistant, in 2004 she was awarded money do to the fact that her right to privacy had been violated when pictures of her leaving a Narcotics Anonymous meeting surfaced.

In 2005, she was allegedly accused of slapping her assistant and then beating her with her BlackBerry, in 2006 she was accused of hitting her housekeeper with a jewel-encrusted phone, in 2007 she plead guilty to charges of reckless assault of her housekeeper and in 2008 she allegedly assaulted a police officer because one of her bags had been lost at the airport. To sum it up, she’s crazy.

Other honorable mentions for National Grouch Day:

Janice Dickinson, Oscar the Grouch, Scrooge, Dick Cheney, Simon Cowell, Maleficent (the witch from Sleeping Beauty), Jafar from Aladdin, Scar from The Lion King, and pretty much any Disney villain. Hey, what’s the deal with all of the Disney grouches?
