Katy Perry dumped by Russell Brand over text

Russell Brand tells Perry of divorce over a text message

We all dread the idea of checking our phone, hoping for a lovely text from our significant other, and instead reading the tiny little print of a painful text message that so unemotionally tells us that we’ve been dumped by our lover. For Katy Perry, that was a reality.

Katy Perry, 28, has recently been revealing more behind her divorce from Russell Brand, 38, and it isn’t pretty. The pop star, who is playing the voice of Smurfette in the upcoming movie “Smurfs 2,” claims that Brand actually told her that he wanted to get divorced over a text. She disclosed that she was quite hurt by him and that she hasn’t heard from the British comedian in quite a while.

“Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011,” Perry said.

The couple married in 2010 after meeting at the MTV Movie Awards in 2009. Fourteen months after the nuptials, Brand and Perry filed for a divorce, citing irreconcilable issues. The heartbreaking divorce was finalized in February 2012.

While Perry is still upset over the divorce, she said that Brand wasn’t the most supportive husband.

“I do admit that I was on the road a lot. Although I invited him time and time again, and I tried to come home as much as I possibly could. You saw that in the movie,” she said of her documentary “Katy Perry: Part of Me.” “That wasn’t edited to leave footage out — there wasn’t any footage of him.”

She told of how she only wanted to be treated as an equal with him, but even as a devoted husband, he couldn’t do that for her.

“At first when I met him, he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness,” she said. “He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting. I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like: This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me. So I have moved on from that.”

While there are thousands of even more devoted fans of Perry who are proud of her for being strong, we will all wonder what the “real truth” is.

Since her divorce, she has been in an on-and-off relationship with John Mayer. They’re most recent split was in March, but they’ve been seen together since them.

While some wonder whether her decision to date Mayer was just to get revenge on Brand, she claims it wasn’t.

I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him,” she said. “All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.”

She has hope for future relationships, despite the heartbreak that has followed her recently.

“I believe that I will be loved again, in the right way. I know I’m worth it,” she said.
