Reports of shots fired at Captiol Hill, suspect detained

Shots were fired at Capitol Hill Thursday possible resulting in multiple injuries

It has just been reported that a series of shots have been fired on Capitol Hill. U.S. Senator Harry Reid has just disclosed that one person was shot Thursday in Washington D.C, and U.S. Capitol police have reported at least one officer being injured.

The U.S. Capitol is now on lock-down following the reports, not letting anyone near the premises. The shooting is said to have occurred at Second Avenue and Maryland Street, which is located near the Senate Hart Office building.

ABC News reported that it is possible that the suspect may have tried to break down the gates of the White House, but law enforcement officials have not confirmed that report. Reuters also reported that “Members of Congress say they heard 6 or 7 gunshots while they were on the Capitol balcony coming from near the House office buildings.”

Sen. Claire McCaskill tweeted out “Shots fired outside the Captiol. We are in temporary lock down.”

The U.S. Capitol issued a statement that said “”SHELTER IN PLACE. Gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill requiring all occupants in all House Office Buildings to shelter in place. Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows. Take annunciators, Go Kits and escape hoods; and move to the innermost part of the office away from external doors or windows. If you are not in your office, take shelter in the nearest office, check in with your OEC and wait for USCP to clear the incident. No one will be permitted to enter or exit the building until directed by USCP. All staff should monitor the situation. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.”

It was just announced that the suspect has been detained, but there is no other information on whether or not there are other suspects.

Pamela Anderson will bring her Baywatch run to the New York City marathon

Pamela Anderson hopes to raise $500,000 for Sean Penn’s charity

Pamela Anderson’s bouncy…um…personality will hopefully be crossing the finish line at this year’s ING New York marathon. The “Baywatch” bombshell announced via her Twitter account on Sunday, that she would be running in the vigorous 26.2-mile race to raise funds for actor Sean Penn’s charity.

“I’m running the New York Marathon this year and raising funds for the J/P Haitian Release organization,” the 46-year-old pop culture icon tweeted.

According to femalefirst.co.uk, Anderson hopes to raise a monumental sum of $500,000 for the charity that is dedicated to the restoration of Haiti after the devastating earthquake that claimed nearly 160,000 lives.  Penn’s amazing foundation provides victims of the 2010 earthquake with brand new homes, education and other essentials.

Pamela Anderson communicated her love for the country on her fundraising page and describes her experience after the disaster. “I was in Haiti shortly after the earthquake to help with local farms and food distribution in tent camps. I visited J/P HRO when it was in the beginning stages. I brought cold beer through rubble-covered streets to volunteers who were working long days surrounded by dust and death. I have known Sean [Penn] a long time…I love him dearly.  I think many people shine in Haiti. They jumped. Took action. Made the decision to help…What if we ALL had the nerve? I think deep down we all do…it feels good to help and it heals us too.

Anderson, who was a contestant on shows “Dancing With the Stars” and the U.K’s “Dancing on Ice” told the Daily News about her latest ambitions. “I like to do things that people think maybe I can’t do, and this is definitely one of those things.” She added,” You know somehow I learned to dance, learned to skate, and all these things people thought I couldn’t do. Now, I’m running a marathon.”

The massive race will require a lot of training and for someone in his or her mid-forties it could prove to be a major challenge, but Pamela Anderson is confident that the spirit of Haiti will push her to the finish line.

“People do things for other people that they wouldn’t ordinarily do for themselves. Haiti is such a magical place. It ha a real special place in my heart…I have a lot of faith that I will be able to get through it. I’m committed.”

Anderson will be joined by supermodel Christy Turlington and reality star Bill Rancic in the race.

Lane Kiffin gets the boot after a failed start to the football season

USC head coach Lane Kiffin was fired Sunday after a loss to Arizona State

Lane Kiffin is officially headed to the unemployment lines. Up until the sun began to rise on Sunday, Kiffin was the head coach of University of Southern California’s football team, until USC’s athletic director Pat Haden gave his head coach the axe. An employment termination was inevitable for Kiffin considering his track record during his career with the Trojans.

Kiffin had lost seven of the last eleven games played and last Saturday was no different with a cringe-worthy loss against Arizona State with a 62-41 outcome. Lane Kiffin’s previous employment history is impressive, but the outcome often turned out like this one, implying maybe Kiffin is in the wrong line of work.

In 2007, Lane Kiffin became one of the youngest head coaches to ever be in the NFL when Raiders owner, Al Davis, hired him. His head-coaching career ended on a sour note when Davis fired Kiffin over the phone after his first season as coach ended with a 4-12 record. At the press conference following the firing, Davis called Kiffin a “flat out liar” and accused him of “bringing disgrace to the organization.”

During a press conference following the official announcement of this most recent firing, Pat Haden was a lot less slanderous than Al Davis. “My job is to what’s best for USC,” he said. “I personally have a great deal of a respect for Lane…He did the absolute best he can. Lane was clearly disappointed. He really, really tried to keep his job.”

Kiffin’s firing was became a vocal plea after a devastating loss against Washington State that left them with a 10-7 score on September 7. Fans were heard chanting the foreshadowing words “Fire Kiffin” as the disappointed team left the stadium.

Snoop Dogg’s son, Cordell Broadus also vocalized his support for the recent firing. The talented high-school junior is one of the best wide receivers in the nation, making him a top pick from USC when recruitment comes around.  According to 247 Sports, Broadus ranks as the sixth best receiver in California in the class of 2015.

Broadus said, “I feel that he should have been fired a while ago and USC is going to raise the bar now because the new coaching staff next year and I’m anxious to see what they’re going to look like.”

Haden has placed his faith with assistant head coach Ed Orgeron, who will be named the interim coach. Orgeron was formerly the head coach at Ole Miss before he was fired in 2007, leaving with a 10-25 record.

The government will most likely shutdown at midnight

An inconclusive decision on a spending bill could lead to a government shutdown

A government shutdown will most likely be happening at midnight tonight. No, this is not a super late April Fool’s joke or another Jimmy Kimmel prank. Republicans and democrats are like two kids fighting over a piggy bank and if they can’t come to an agreement, then essentially everyone gets a timeout. The Senate is expected to meet today at 2 p.m. and will try to come to an agreement on the government’s spending bill.

Over the weekend the House of Representatives met over decisions regarding a proposed spending bill, the bill got held up when Republicans in the House claimed that the bill included anti-Obamacare amendments, something the Senate democrats insists doesn’t exist. The Republicans in the House of Representatives are so opposed to President Obama’s healthcare plan, cleverly titled Obamacare, that they are willing to risk a government shutdown.

The halt to government operations will be felt more by some than others. Federal air traffic controllers will still continue their jobs. Visa and passport processing will still continue as well as the normal operations concerning the embassies and consulates overseas. While Social Security and Medicare benefits will also continue to come in, disability applications could have a longer processing period, possibly being delayed until the shutdown is over.

All national parks would close down if a government shutdown happens at midnight. Campers and other overnight visitors in any of the national parks will have 48 hours to leave and visitor centers in national landmarks all over the United States, including the Statue of Liberty will be closed. The military could also feel the impact with the 1.4 million active duty members having their paychecks delayed.

A possible government shutdown will indefinitely have a detrimental impact on the economy. Financial markets will get turned upside down with the unemployment rising higher than ever. On October 17 the US Treasury is presumed to ask investors for $120 billion in loans. Given our current economic state, it is a possibility that investors will be wary of loaning this money, which would cause them to raise interest rates on the loans.

This will affect most citizens, considering it will cause the interest on mortgages, auto loans, school loans and credit card bills to also rise. Businesses will also be affected, since all health inspections will cease to happen with health inspectors only being called if the business is a high-risk case.

The House of Representatives tried to prevent this last minute decision from happening by placing calls to the Senate and encouraging them not to delay the meeting to today. In a statement issued on Sunday, House Speaker John Boehner said “[The House] worked late into the night Saturday to prevent a government shutdown, and the Senate now, must move quickly to do the same, if the Senate stalls until Monday afternoon instead of working today, it would be an act of breathtaking arrogance by the Senate Democratic leadership.”

It looks like if the government doesn’t come to a consensus by midnight, we could all be feeling the collective punch that a government shutdown will throw at us.

90s kids rejoice: Dumb and Dumber 2 is happening

Actor Jeff Daniels revealed Dumb and Dumber 2 is currently being filmed

The dream of the 90s is indeed alive with Cult films of the decade gaining the spotlight these days with the announcement of a Jurassic Park 4 and now the announcement that Dumb and Dumber 2 will be happening. Void of those two imposters from the When Harry Met Lloyd prequel, this sequel features Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels diminishing their brain cells as they prepare to step back in the roles of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. After winning his first Emmy this past Sunday for his role on The Newsroom, actor Jeff Daniels revealed after his win that he would be flying out to work on the sequel to the classic comedy.

“We’re going to party until dawn and then I’m going to hop on a plane to Atlanta and start shooting Dumb and Dumber 2,” he explained backstage at the Emmys.

Back in 1994, the original film followed Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne as they trekked across country to return a briefcase to a woman that Lloyd instantly fell in love with, only to be swept up in a kidnapping scheme. The original directors, Bobby and Peter Farrelly are also back on board. Last year, Peter disclosed the plot for this go around to the Digital Spy. “The story revolves around the fact that one of them may have sired a child. They want to go find the child because he’s having a kidney problem and he wants to ask him for one of his kidneys.”

Anyone who remembers Dumb and Dumber can recall that infamous toilet scene, and Jeff Daniels promises that this Dumb and Dumber will make that scene look like something out of My Little Pony. “There are some things we’re going to do in Dumb and Dumber 2 that make the toilet scene look lame…pales in comparison. I can’t divulge what, just that they’ve topped it.”

Bobby and Peter Farrelly have fallen from grace lately, directing probably two of the worst movies to hit the silver screen in a long time with blunders Movie 43 and The Three Stooges. Hopefully, they will be able to capture the essence of the original while still appealing to current generations who might not be too familiar with the original movie.  Warner Bros. must not have believed it was possible, since the studio passed on the project in June before Universal Pictures took a chance and picked up the film.

Jim Carrey’s star also has started to dim with his appearance in films beginning to lessen. Dumb and Dumber will probably not be too violent since Jim Carrey refused to promote his last film, Kick Ass 2, since he felt the film had too much gratuitous violence. Jeff Daniels has blossomed out of his role as Harry Dunne to become a critically-acclaimed actor, whose portrayal as Will McAvoy won him an Emmy against the likes of Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston.

Hopefully, this sequel will please fans of Dumb and Dumber as well as gain new ones. The sequel is thought to be out next year.

iOS 7 shows that Apple finally recognizes steep competition

iOS 7 was released today with brand new features and an interface

Techies and Apple enthusiasts alike, rejoice! iOS 7 has finally arrived, giving iPhone users a completely different experience that will bring the same giddy feeling iPhone owners had when they first took their phone out of the box. iOS 7 presents a completely revamped look with a brand new interface and fresh features that will drastically change the way you use your iPhone.

The brand new layout tricks the brain into thinking you have a larger screen with the signature black bars now being eliminated from the screen and high-definition, full-screen images being in it’s place.  The excitement with iOS 7 continues on to the passcode screen, which spotlights chic circles now rather than the sterile boxes that the previous iOS had.

To directly compete against Apple’s current nemesis, the Samsung Galaxy, they have now incorporated a feature called AirDrop, which allows users to share media with a swift touch of the share button. If the user that is being shared with is near then the user’s name will pop up and after they receive the confirmation screen, the download will begin. Once the recipient’s download is complete, the information received will immediately open in the app that it pertains to.

iOS 7 is also firing virtual bullets at Instagram with their brand new camera app. The camera app will now feature nine photo filters, similar to the ones on Instagram that users can now apply before or after the picture is taken.

Since most competing smartphones are generally connected by Google, web browsing is made easy with the browser bar acting a search query and a direct web address portal. In the previous iOS format, Safari did not act as a search query, making it a little more difficult for people who wanted to search something without typing a full web address. iOS 7 eliminates this problem with Safari taking on both roles making the browsing experience smoother.

The popular internet radio service Pandora will also not be an iOS 7 feature since Apple is taking matters into their own hands with the edition of iTunes Radio. Apple will also make it so users can save their minutes with the inclusion of FaceTime audio. As long as the Internet is within reach, users will be even be able to make international calls with other iOS users.

It is evident the theme of the iOS 7 is simplicity once iPhone owners take a look at the brand new Control Center. The Control Center is revealed when you swipe up, and it allows you to adjust the brightness of your screen, go into Airplane mode or turn on the iPhone flash feature which can turn your iPhone into a flashlight. The easy-access Control Center has been available on Droids for some time, which shows that Apple has finally woke up and evaluated the competitor.

Although Apple’s iOS 7 is in no way an innovative look at technology, it is an indication that Apple is going to have to do a little more than rely on their massive name and the legacy of Steve Jobs to stay relevant. Ever since the release of the Samsung Galaxy, the competition has been close and it is ultimately up to the consumer to decide who will come out on top.

Washington Navy Yard shooting ensues panic with two shooters still at large

At least 7 dead, and 4 others injured in grisly Washington Navy Yard shooting

The Washington Navy Yard has been a grisly scene of tragedy; with a shooter killing at least six people this Monday morning. An unnamed shooter went on a deadly murderous spree at around 8:20 a.m. and shot as many as 11 people while making his way around the extensive building close to 3,000 people work on the naval base.

News of the disturbing chain of events reached the masses when the Navy said on their Twitter feed that there was an active shooter at building 197 at the Washington Navy Yard and that three shots had been fired.

Rick Mason, a program management analysis for the navy, reported that he heard an armed man shooting from an overlook on the fourth floor in the hallway that is outside of his office. He explained that the gunman was aiming at the cafeteria below him where people had been seated.

Patricia Ward, a logistics management specialist, was in the cafeteria when the shooting began. “I heard three shots—pow, pow, pow. Thirty seconds later I heard four more shots.”

James Killingworth, a mason from Maryland was working on rebuilding a historic wall near the deadly scene when he saw the chaos that ensued this morning. “Everything they had, Secret Service, federal police, everyone came speeding down the street. I’ve never seen so many police in my life,” he explained. “Scary morning.”

The chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, Cathy Lanier, said that there might be two other gunmen with both dressed in military-style uniforms and one wearing a beret. Law enforcement officials said one of the two shooters that is being searched for is a white male who is wearing a khaki navy uniform and carrying a handgun. The other missing shooter is being described as a black male who is about 50 years old and carrying a long gun.

“The big concern for us right now is that we potentially have two other shooters that we have not located at this point,” explained Lanier at a brief news conference at the Navy Yard.

Although no name has been announced, officials have reported the dead shooter as being a former navy employee whose work status had been changed earlier in the year.

President Obama weighed in on this dismal morning during his live speech regarding the fifth anniversary of the financial crisis. “We still don’t know all the facts, but we do know several people have been shot and some have been killed,” President Obama said. “We’re confronting yet another mass shooting and today it happened on a military installation in our nation’s capital. It’s a shooting that targeted our military and civilian personnel.”

Obama praised the people who sacrifice for this country everyday. “These are men and women who were going to work doing their jobs and protecting all of us.” He added, “They’re patriots. They know the dangers of serving abroad, but today they faced the unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected at home.”

For the past four years the U.S. has averaged a cataclysmic total of one mass shooting a month. ThinkProgress determined that there have been fourteen mass shootings since December 14, 2012- the fateful date that the Sandy Hook Elementary mass murder happened. As the gun debate continues to press on, these mass shootings have to be taken into consideration as a disturbing trend that needs to end as more lives tragically end.

This shooting continues to develop as the search for the shooter continues.

If anyone wants to find out any information on family members during this tragic event please call 202-433-6151 or 202-433-9713.

Miss America becomes victim to racist backlash

Nina Davuluri became the first Miss America of Indian descent

Miss America 2013 has risen from the Empire State for the second year in a row, but this year’s winner has made history with her title. Nina Davuluri has been the first pageant contestant of Indian descent to get the title of Miss America, which brought in huge waves of support for Davuluri and prompted Davuluri to nickname herself “Miss Diversity.”

“I’m most excited to promote my platform, I was the first Indian Miss New York and I’m so proud to be the first Indian Miss America,” she said.

The 24-year-old pageant queen reigns from Fayetteville, New York. Her father immigrated to the states 30 years ago and became a successful gynecologist. Nina Davuluri attended the University of Michigan and received a degree in brain behavior and cognitive science.

Nina Davuluri has been an advocate for healthy living since she battled obesity and an eating disorder in her younger years, where she claimed to have been 60 pounds heavier during her last couple of years at the University of Michigan.  In a twist of irony, Davuluri got into some hot water when she was overheard spewing some catty remarks about last year’s winner, Mallory Hagan.

After claiming the crown as Miss New York on July 16, Davuluri went to a hotel with some people to celebrate when a competitor overhead Nina Davuluri refer to Hagan as “fat as sh**.” Davuluri’s hypocritical comments were recorded along with racist remarks made by some of her friends who were in the hotel room with her.

Shortly after the comments were making headlines, Davuluri took to Facebook to apologize for her friend’s racist comments and denied any wrongdoing.

“I want to apologize for the awful statements by people in my room…there were people who claimed to be my supporters and said things I never agreed with nor supported,” Nina Davuluri explained. “I was never a part of the words or statements that may have been hurtful…I’m sorry if someone said something that was inappropriate.”

Since winning the sparkly tiara, Davuluri has been the target from racists who feel she is not American enough to have won the title.  Twitter exploded with ignorant remarks to people referring to her as a Muslim and even going on to say she resembled a terrorist. FOX News host Ted Harnes made a remark with racist undertones when he suggested the gun toting, Miss Kansas should have won.

“The liberal Miss America judges won’t say this-but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values,” he said.

Davuluri is actually the perfect representation for this country, being the embodiment of the cultural melting pot that is essentially America. Davuluri’s platform was the competition was “Celebrating Diversity Through Cultural Competency” and her talent of choice that helped her win the competition consisted of Bollywood moves and classic Indian dances.

When asked about the racist backlash, Miss America described her pride. “I have to rise above that,” she explained. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”

Jurassic Park 4 gets a release date and a new title

Jurassic Park 4 will get a June 2015 release date

Jurassic Park 4 is happening. Take a minute to collect yourself. The fourth installment to the classic prehistoric fantasy series was first heard about back in May when it was rumored that, Colin Trevorrow, the director of Safety Not Guaranteed, would be taking on Jurassic Park 4 and that production of the film would be delayed. The film was originally scripted by Planet of the Apes screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, but Universal Studios decided they would rather have Trevorrow and producer Pat Crowley drum up their own version of the script.

Now, Universal Studios has announced that Jurassic Park 4 will get a brand new makeover with the title: Jurassic World. Jurassic World also got an official release date with the giant mechanical dinosaurs taking over the silver screen on June 12, 2015.

In addition to the new director Colin Trevorrow, legendary director and creator of the original series, Steven Spielberg will also be directing the movie, giving Jurassic fanboys even more reason to be optimistic about this reboot.

Casting for Jurassic World has yet to be announced by the rumor mill has been a float with names, since the announcement of the reboot in May.  The Help actress Bryce Dallas Howard has been mentioned, along with Lee Daniel’s The Butler actor David Oyelowo and  Tron: Legacy actor Garrett Hedlund.

The Summer of 2015 will most likely be the biggest one for the film industry yet, with the season overflowing with big-budget blockbusters.  The Avengers sequel Avengers: The Age of Ultron will be zooming onto the big screen along with an Independence Day sequel by Roland Emmerich. Major phenomenon Pirates of the Carribean will also be getting another movie tacked onto the series with Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The biggest blockbuster of the Summer will most likely be Zack Snyder’s Batman/Superman film, where Ben Affleck has been officially announced as Batman.

Although Jurassic World has a lot of competition it will definitely bring in massive amounts of money with the first movie grossing a total of $357,067,947. With two years before the release, that gives people two years to brush up on their prehistoric knowledge.
