5 Ways to clean up your skin care act

Advice on how to keep your skin as healthy as possible

Have you ever really looked at the ingredient list on the back of your go-to face wash? If it reads like an organic chem study guide, it probably contains hidden toxic ingredients, meaning that your cleanser—and possibly many of the other skin care products on your counter—could be doing more harm than its citrus-mint scent suggests.

Unlike with food and drugs, the FDA doesn’t require manufacturers to fully disclose all the ingredients, including preservatives, petroleum derivatives, or artificial fragrances, used in skin care and cosmetic products. This is troubling because many of the most commonly used ingredients often cause irritation, or other unintended side effects.

Even more concerning is the indisputable scientific evidence linking long-term exposure to known endocrine disruptors— including phthalates, parabens, and triclosan—found in personal care products that may cause neurological, developmental, and reproductive problems as well as obesity and cancer cell growth.

But, there’s no need to panic! The HERMOSA study, conducted by researchers at UC Berkeley and Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas revealed that even a brief discontinuation from certain cosmetics, lotions, and hair care products can significantly decrease levels of hormone-disrupting chemicals in teen girls*.

Ready to ditch the toxins from your skin care, and switch to clean and safe products that are just as effective?

MyChelle Dermaceuticals, a leading natural skin care brand, believes it is the responsibility of the companies creating and distributing skin care, cosmetics, and sunscreens to completely list their products’ ingredients. The Colorado-based company is 100% committed to transparency when it comes to the botanicals and plant-based ingredients they put in their formulas.

Earlier this year, MyChelle partnered with the influential, non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) as a Founding Member of EWG VERIFIED™.  This verification program is designed to help consumers quickly identify personal care products—including cosmetics—that meet the EWG’s strictest standards for ingredients, transparency in product labeling, and good manufacturing practices.

Making the transition to a natural routine can be overwhelming, so MyChelle has 5 simple tips to help you clean up your skin care act for good:

1. Knowledge is Power. The EWG Skin Deep® Database website and its Healthy Living App offers easy-to-navigate ratings for a wide range of products and ingredients on the market.

2. Dump Them All or Start Small. If you’re ready to go all-in with a natural approach to skin care, make a clean break with the bad and start from scratch. However, if you’ve invested a small fortune in a skin care system, prioritize by replacing the products that sit longest on your skin like moisturizers and serums.

3. Avoid These Troublemakers At All Cost. Skin care products containing the following ingredients should be banned from your cart and counter: Phthalates, Parabens, Benzoyl Peroxide, Emulsifiers (DEA, TEA, MEA), Propylene Glycol (PG), Sulfates (SLS/SLES) , Ureas, and Artificial Colors.

4. Use Fewer, More Effective Products – According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, American women use an average of 12 personal care products each day. Scale back your routine to include the basics: cleanser, exfoliator, and moisturizer. Then add targeted serums and a broad-spectrum sunscreen. The MyChelle Beauty Key 3 can be used daily to perfect, correct, and protect all skin types.

5. Choose a Safe Sunscreen and Use it Daily – Toss any sunscreens that use synthetic chemicals for protection and swap them for 100% mineral-based options that provide optimal defense against harmful UVA and UVB rays. MyChelle sunscreens are certified non-nano, offer broad-spectrum protection, and antioxidant-rich formulations that are biodegradable, reef safe, and responsibly packaged.
