NIU senior killed at the age of 22

Students at NIU are in mourning today, following the death of Northern Illinois University student Steven R. Agee II.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Agee, 22, was a senior majoring in sociology. Agee was fatally shot early Wednesday morning at an off-campus party.

The gunman fled after the shooting, but DeKalb police say they have made a significant development in the case and are following “some very promising leads.” The gunman was described as an African-American man, about 20 years old, with a dark complexion, between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-11and last seen wearing a dark jacket.

NIU officials initially issued an emergency alert advising students to use caution and avoid unnecessary travel. But DeKalb police released a statement at 6:30 a.m. saying “there is no imminent threat to the university or community at large because the situation was an isolated incident that occurred as a result of an argument that escalated between two people at an off-campus party.”
