David Joyner has been named the acting athletic director for Penn State.

AP reports that Joyner, a board member, was chosen as athletic director in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal. Joyner wrestled and played football for Penn State, and is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine.

Joyner’s position as board member has been suspended in light of his new role. One of his tasks as the new athletic director will be searching for a replacement for Joe Paterno.

New Penn State president Rod Erickson commented on Joyner, saying, ”Dave Joyner has served the board with integrity, and he is internationally known for his work with the US Olympic Committee. I am confident that he will bring that same integrity to his new role.”

Previously, Tim Curley was the athletic director for Penn State.
