396 arrests- only in Chicago

Nikki Shewmaker

No, officers, don't worry about those pesky murder rates plaguing the city, you have to keep arresting this lady

Woman released to undergo treatment after 396th arrest

396 arrests- only in Chicago, folks! Shermain Miles, 51, has racked up 396 arrests in 35 years. That’s got to be some kind of record (Amanda Bynes you need to catch up!). Shermain Miles has a criminal record that includes multiple felonies and misdemeanors, which include assault, armed robbery, public drinking, petty theft, drug possession, prostitution and multiple parole violations.(At this point, everything the woman does must actively be a parole violation.)

Miles, who seemed particularly nonplussed about the 396 arrests, appeared in a Chicago courtroom on Monday to plead guilty to attacking a city alderman. Miles has been housed at the Logan Correctional Center since December, when the attack on Alderman James Cappelman violated her parole. Before that Miles had served three years for armed robbery. Somehow though, despite (let’s say it again, in case the sheer audacity hasn’t sunk in) 396 arrests, the judge agreed to time served for the assault since Shermain Miles agreed to undergo substance abuse and mental health treatment programs.

“All of us are reaching out to you and offering you, maybe for the first time in your life, a hand, OK?” Judge Peggy Chiampas told Shermain Miles. “But you’ve got to reach out and grab all of our hands as well.” Um, it seems pretty certain that someone has reached out to Shermain Miles, oh, just a ballpark figure, 396 other times, for those 396 arrests in which she is still out, at this very moment, terrorizing normal, law-abiding Chicagoans ( few-and-far between, but they do exist).

Seriously, Chicago, maybe it’s time for you to embrace the “3 Strikes and You’re Out” law, because some people need to be permanently benched.
