Etta James succumbs to leukemia

A month ago, we reported that Etta James was facing incurable leukemia. We are sad to report that James has now died.

CNN’s Brooke Baldwin tweeted, “Just in to #CNN: Etta James passed away, according to her longtime friend and manager. #RIP.”

As we reported last month, James was under the care of Dr. Elaine James who had been caring for Etta since March 2010. Etta’s manager Lupe De Leon said in December, “Etta has a terminal illness. She’s in the final stage of leukemia. She has also been disgnosed with dementia and hepatitis C. She’s in a home right now and mostly sleeps. She is under the care of a live- in doctor from Riverside Community Hospital and two others who have placed her on oxygen. Her husband is with her 24 hours a day and her sons visit regularly. We’re all very sad. We’re just waiting.”

James would have been 74 on January 25.
