Sadness draped many mean green hearts last week as the news that Germaine Dawson, a UNT linebacker and defensive back, was murdered left a cloud of darkness over the campus like an approaching thunderstorm. The sadness will not leave as quickly as a Texas thunderhead may, however, but the news of possible justice may let a thin ray of sunlight shine through.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Ryan Harrison was arrested on Tuesday evening in Dallas for his alleged participation in Dawson’s murder. Reporter Liz Ford also related the information that Harrison’s Bond is set at 250,000 dollars.
Beyond Harrison’s arrest by the Lewisville police, and only the possibility of his participation in Dawson’s murder, little can be done except to wait for justice to prevail.
Dawson was last seen Wednesday night, and was reported missing by his girlfriend the following Thursday. A passerby reported to police that a man was sleeping in a white SUV. Upon investigation, Lewisville police found the sleeper was Dawson, and he was dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
Details from official court documents filed by Lewisville police detail how on March 27th, Officer R. Lee was called to the 2400 block of interstate 35 north bound Frontage road. The police report confirms rumors that Dawson was involved in a drug deal to obtain marijuana--Dawson was going to meet Harrison to obtain drugs. The report states that Dawson was referred through a mutual acquaintance to Harrison.
Once Dawson was reported missing, and the investigation began, this acquaintance was found and questioned. He led police to Harrison explaining once he became aware that Dawson was missing, he called Harrison. Harrison told him the drug deal had gone “left.” The Lewisville police report also details further evidence to support this story via the investigation of Harrison’s phone records, which show Dawson in his contact list.
Our Take:
The tragedy of murder, any loss of human life, is enough on its own, but Dawson having played four years for the Mean Green strikes a chord. His murder, his youth, his good nature all make his death seem more tragic. A memorial was held in his honor last night at Fouts Field, but honoring the dead can be done at any moment in any capacity.
The next time you watch the Mean Green give a special cheer for the lost warrior. In whatever way, have a moment to honor the good man lost. I hope justice is swift, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
