The Hunger Games: The first book in the best-selling trilogy

The Hunger Games now the best-seller on Amazon, beating out Harry Potter

Watch out, Harry Potter, your wand can’t save you this time. Amazon announced Friday that the popular trilogy The Hunger Games has overtaken the Harry Potter books as the best-selling book series.

Debuting in 2008, Katniss Everdeen, heroine of The Hunger Games trilogy, helped to boost the series to the top spot on Amazon. This takes into account both print and Kindle sales.

Interestingly enough, The Hunger Games series, written by Suzanne Collins, only has three books in comparison to the popular Harry Potter series, which contains seven. This alone speaks to how big of an accomplishment this truly is and how immensely popular the trilogy has become in just four years.

Both book series received a large boost from the films that were based on the best-sellers. In fact, The Hunger Games movie sold a mere 3.8 million DVDs and Blu-ray discs in their first weekend being sold in the U.S. and Canada.

These impressive numbers even surpassed the last two ever-popular Twilight films. However, The Twilight Saga: New Moon sold 4 million discs within its first week in 2010.

The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, is due to hit theatres on November 22, 2013.
