US Colleges To Make COVID-19 Vaccinations Mandatory

US Colleges To Make COVID-19 Vaccinations Mandatory

A substantial number of US colleges and universities have stated that students will require to have a COVID-19 vaccination prior to returning to campus this fall. This would allow students to return to in-person classes as well as move into the provided campus housing.

According to information from the Chronicle of Higher Education, in excess of 680 public and private colleges covering the length and breadth of the US, will make receiving a COVID-19 vaccination compulsory to their students. Some of the first institutions to announce this mandate included the likes of Duke University and Cornell University.

Similar mandates have already been put in place, requiring college students to be vaccinated against other diseases including measles and mumps, with a COVID-19 jab set to be next made statutory.

Why Are Colleges Requiring their Students to be Vaccinated?

Towards the beginning of the pandemic, when the virus spread across the US at an alarming pace, colleges and universities across the US shut down, declaring the beginning of online learning for their students. Some colleges did decide to allow students to return to their campuses towards the end of the year, however there were various restrictions established in different institutions such as limited capacity classrooms and residence halls as well as mandatory mask wearing across campus.

“Campuses really want to get back to normal operations as quickly as possible,” declared Chris Marsicano, an education professor and founding director of the College Crisis Initiative at Davidson College in North Carolina.

With the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccination against the virus evident, there is increasing hope that students will be able to return to their in-person lectures and study groups besides to enjoying the extra-curricular activities, and therefore having a more regular college experience.

Chief health officer at the University of Michigan, Dr Preeti Malani, said: “If you can ensure a highly vaccinated community, you can get back to a lot of those things safely”

Dr Malani continues by stating that the vaccinations will not only be able to protect the individual but also protect whole communities. She express her opinion on the available vaccine as “safe and effective” and she motivates students to think about other people when deciding whether to get the vaccination.

There can be exemptions given to certain students due to laws put in place in numerous states and religious beliefs. Therefore, institutions might have to push unvaccinated students to enroll in course available online instead.

Are the Increases in STIs Signs of a New Sexual Health Epidemic?

New findings published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) found more than one million sexually transmitted infections  or STIs are contracted per day, with the most commonly contracted infections being gonorrhoea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis and syphilis. Dr. Melanie Taylor, who led the report and medical epidemiologist at the WHO department of Reproductive Health and Research stated, “These infections indicate people are taking risks with their health, with their sexuality and with their reproductive health.”

The demographic at greater risk of contracting STIs are young people. According to the American Sexual Health Association, nearly 65 percent of high school students will have participated in sexual intercourse by the time they’ve reached the twelfth grade. The risk of obtaining an STI is increased when under the influence of alcohol or drugs, owing to the likelihood of having unprotected sex and carelessness with choosing partners.

 Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea

The surplus in the number of sexually transmitted infections comes in the wake of an increasing number of STIs showings signs of resistance to antibiotics. Gonorrhoea has now shown complete resistance to the traditional and most effective treatment method, fluoroquinolone.Transmitted by the bacteria, neisseria gonorrhoeae during unprotected sex, the symptoms of gonorrhoea include unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, painful urination, abdominal pain and in women, vaginal bleeding.

These resistant strains of gonorrhoea have been tied to an outbreak with infection failing to be treated by alternative methods, such as doses of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, as advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Antibiotic resistant strains therefore represent a major public health threat; the guidelines that have been imposed for individuals diagnosed with gonorrhoea involves the use of dual therapy with ceftriaxone by deep intramuscular injection and oral azithromycin. Nonetheless, cases of reported resistance to cephalosporin could make the application of ceftriaxone ineffective.

Better diagnostics and sexual health care

Dr. Jeffrey Klausner,Professor of Medicine and Public Health at David Geffen School of Medicine and Fielding School of Public Health in LA, emphasised the need to address resistant strains of gonorrhoea by asserting, “There is an urgent need for better diagnostics to address the problem of drug-resistant gonorrhoea in the United States.”

The need for better diagnostic methods has propelled the establishment of the ResistancePlus GC (SpeeDx),a test which will be used to effectively detect if the neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria in a patient is susceptible or resistant to treatment via ciprofloxacin. The antibiotic-resistance test will subsequently be able detect more quickly, whether ciprofloxacin can or cannot be used on a patient and will save the time of patients.

If left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to major health implications in men and women. The long-term consequences of untreated gonorrhoea include pelvic inflammatory disease, which can inflict serious damage to the fallopian tubes and maximize the likelihood of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. In both men and women, another complication is a disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI) typified in the body by join pain and dermatitis.

It is therefore imperative more sexual health services are put into place across all states and are easily accessible to all to prevent new cases of STIs and slow the rate of infections until more effective treatment methods for antibiotic-resistant strains are found.

Why Are Eco-friendly Choices for Our Environment Important?

Earlier this year, as the Midwest was plunged into its coldest weather on record, on the other side of the planet, wildfires raged in Australia’s record-breaking heat. This is weather in the age of extremes.  It’s clear that an answer to climate change is needed at a policy level. While acts like the Green New Deal that propose economic stimulus programs aiming to address climate change are being met with the tired mantra of “we can’t afford to do it,” a louder voice is finally starting to answer in response: we can’t afford not to. Outside of politics, individuals can make small changes in their personal lives that will support a healthier planet and environment.

College News takes a look at the impact of a few industries on the environment and what we can do about it.

Fashion’s influence on the environment

Fashion’s harsh impact on our environment cannot be denied, and its negative effect is further amplified by consumers prioritizing price over ethics. When is the last time you were at a fast fashion retailer and considered what your purchase would mean to the environment?

You probably thought about the price, the trend, the places you would wear it and maybe considered the cost-per-wear.

But did you consider the amount of water used to manufacture that garment? The emissions created from transporting that garment from overseas? The chemicals and dyes used to give that garment its color How many pieces just like yours that will end up in a landfill in a matter of months?

The next time you’re indulging in some retail therapy, take a moment to consider the full life that item has lived before it found itself in your hands.

What can you do?

Participating in the second-hand clothing economy is likely the easiest way to reduce your footprint. If sifting through Goodwill bins isn’t quite your thing, there are many curated second-hand retailers where you can shop online and in person for gently used, on-trend pieces.Whatever you do, keep your clothes out of the trash.

According to the EPA over 16 million tons of textile waste were generated in the US in 2014 alone. Over 10 million tons of that ended up in landfills. If pre-loved clothing just isn’t your jam, you can become a conscious consumer of new clothing as well. Take a couple of minutes to research your favorite brands and take a look at their stance on sustainability.

Many brand are making the move towards sustainable manufacturing practices.

Technology

Technology may seem eco-friendly—it saves time, paper, energy and transportation; however, with most of us updating our gadgets as soon as they are released, more tech waste than ever is being generated.

According to The Balance Small Business, only 15 to 30 percent of tech waste is recycled. Twenty to 50 million tons of tech waste is generated worldwide every year, which amounts to over five percent of the municipal waste stream. Seventy percent of hazardous waste is deposited in landfills. And tech waste is expected to increase by eight percent each year.

What can you do?

Whenever you upgrade your technology, recycle your out-of-date tech. Many office supply stores and community centers host recycling drives for used tech. If your tech is still functional, it’s worth trying to trade in when you are buying your new tech or take to a reseller platform to sell your gadget directly to its new home.

Pollution

If you look around, you’ll see waste everywhere in the environment. According to Rubicon Global, the average household in the United States produces over four pounds per day of trash and over 56 tons per year. Forty percent of the world’s total waste is produced in the United States despite the country only making up five percent of the world’s population. Six hundred and forty pounds of solid waste is produced by the average college student annually. Ninety thousand pounds of waste will be left behind by the average American for future generations.

What can you do?

The easiest way to create a change within our environment is by creating less waste in our daily lives and responsibly disposing of the waste we do create. In addition, we can try to help clean up the waste created by others. Next time you see a piece of trash on the ground, do your part for the planet and dispose of it responsibly. Every piece of trash kept out of the environment adds up to reduce our negligent waste on this planet.

It’s World Bee Day and We’re A-Buzz

World Bee Day came into effect through a proposal to the UN from Slovenia, that May the 20th should be observed as World Bee Day to maximize awareness about the importance of both bees and beekeeping. After three years, the proposal was accepted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017. May 20 also coincides with the birthday of Slovenian beekeeping pioneer Anton Janša and honors his endless efforts to raise awareness about beekeeping, otherwise known as apiculture.

Why bee friendly?

Hummingbird, wasps, moths, beetles and butterflies are all vital for the process of pollination; however, bees rank as the most important pollinator of them all. The bee experts at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations report a third of the world’s food production to be entirely reliant on bees. Bees are thus essential to ensuring our food security via pollination. Pollinations occurs as bees nestle on the flower of plant to collect pollen and nectar for their colony, and as they do this, pollen becomes attached to their hairs on their body and thereafter, fertilising the next plant they settle on.

According to the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, a multitude of foods depend on bee pollination. These include fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, gooseberries, grapes, cranberries and watermelon. Vegetables that are pollinated by bees include of beans, beets, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes and pumpkins. Moreover, even the cotton you’re wearing or the morning coffee you down before class depends on bee pollination, as the plants these materials are sourced from rely on bees to pollinate them.

Correspondingly, the United Nations categorize bees as fundamental to the second of their seventeen sustainable development goals, Zero Hunger. With food inequity causing malnourishment, our increasing world population size, climate change and pollution, bees offer a sustainable means to supporting our growing population, encouraging biodiversity and fructifying our ecosystem. Concurrently, bees are paramount to securing the livelihood of agricultural workers, as they are necessary for generating a strong crop yield.

Establishing the risks to bees

There are various factors placing bees and other pollinators at risk, yet the main variables threatening the extinction of pollinators consist of pollution, increased use of pesticides in agriculture and climate change. Air pollution has a particular, adverse effect on bees by mixing with the scent molecules of plants and consequently, causing the bees to be slower at finding food for their colony and at pollinating.

UN Environment biodiversity specialist, Marieta Sakalian stated, “Governments need to take the lead…Increasing crop and regional farm diversity as well as targeted habitat conservation, management or restoration is one way of combatting climate change and promoting biodiversity.”

World Bee Day drives home an initiative to help save bees not only to government, but also to citizens across the globe. You can play an active role in preserving our bee population by planting more nectar bearing plants, eliminating the use of harmful pesticides in your garden and raising awareness at your college or community center.

Dress Dapper to Graduate Your Style

We’ve all heard the saying “dress for success.” We’d like to offer another piece of advice: “Dapper is in the details.” If you want to set yourself up for success after graduation, you can’t afford to overlook the details. Fortunately, Dapper Classics has you covered.

Our Story

Dapper Classics was launched following a conversation between a father and a son about the limited options for stylish, American-made dress socks that wouldn’t sag or bunch upon wears. Fred and Harrison started knitting a solution to the problem in 2012. In the almost, seven years since, we have purchased five knitting machines and expanded our offerings to include Made in USA neckwear and trousers.

The Dapper Difference

Through our commitment American manufacturing, we’ve partnered with experts in their crafts. Our socks are knitted at a third-generation family mill in North Carolina, our neckties are handmade by a team of artisans in New York, and our trousers are hand-tailored at New York factory with nearly 100 years of tailoring expertise. All Dapper Classics products are made with the details in mind.

Dressing Like A Grown-up

Our socks are knitted with linked toes for additional style and comfort. Available in cotton, merino wool, and cashmere in over-the-calf and mid-calf fits, our socks keep you looking good all year-round. Dapper Classics entered the “sock game” around the time workplaces started trending toward the casual. Now more than ever, people are using their socks to express themselves and have a little fun with their office attire. Our wide range of styles – from solids to skull and crossbones – offers something for everyone.

Whether you prefer bold or traditional footwear, you’ll want socks you can count on as you embark on the daily grind of the “real world.” Going sockless looks like you forgot to finish getting dressed up and athletic tube socks and cheap dress socks won’t get the job done. Dapper Classics socks are made to stay up all day long. When you’re wearing our hosiery, you can focus on your work and forget about having to constantly reach down to pull up your socks. You can also cross your legs in confidence knowing that doing so won’t reveal sloppy bunched up socks and exposed skin – an embarrassing faux pas you’ll want to avoid at work and when you’re out socializing.

Classic Styles For Organized Appearances

For those times at work when you need to dress your absolute best – interviews and important meetings – our neckwear can help pull together your look. Our silk, cotton, and linen ties are designed with classic style in mind, making them easy to wear with your staple shirts and suits. Pair our ties with complementary socks for a well-coordinated look that will definitely be noticed. Pairing our neckwear and hosiery is also a winning formula for formal events outside of work. Well-stocked sock drawers and tie racks will have you ready for weddings – which you’re sure to be invited to following graduation – and community events.

Moving beyond accessories, our hand-tailored trousers are well worth the investment if you’re ready to get serious about dressing like a grown-up. Competitively priced, our pants come unfinished for custom tailoring. Dapper Classics trousers come in two fits – slim and classic – and a range of colors and fabrics. Our cotton chinos, linens, hopsacks, and lightweight wools are ideal for the months following graduation. And our heavier wools, donegals, and moleskins will get you through the fall and winter.

More Than A Wardrobe

As nice as Dapper Classics socks, ties, and trousers are, they’re more than just quality goods to add to your wardrobe. Every product we make comes with a story – the story of a small family business committed to supporting other American jobs. When you shop Dapper Classics, you’re participating in that story.

The Dos and Don’ts of College Interviews

Applying for college or university is stressful enough, without the added pressure of reviewing for exams and making sure you’re on track of coursework deadlines, which is why we have compiled a list of our dos and don’ts when it comes to preparing for your college interviews.

The Dos

  1. Tailor your interview research

While widely researching many universities and colleges during your application process is advised, when it comes to preparing for interviews, it is better to tailor your fact-finding mission. Tailoring your research will not only prepare you for the interview process, it will also give you better insight as to if a particular university is for you. Start by noting the classes you’re most interested in, and afterwards, record how specific elements of your prior experience or education tie into these subjects.

Moreover, be sure to make note of why you would like to study “X Course” at this particular university? The interview stage is about assessing your overall suitability both for the course you’re applying to and university.

  1. Practice makes perfect

Alongside measuring your compatibility with the course and college, the interview stage looks at your communication skills. Shed the waffle with a concise script of what you plan to say, either in bullet points or as a complete text.

To avoid ‘umming’ and ‘ahhing’ when it comes to responding to questions, go over the type of questions most commonly asked at interviews for your course. Even if these questions aren’t exactly the same ones that come up, you can still quickly modify your answer in your head to execute a well-delivered, fast response.

  1. Smile

The stress of seeing applicants come in and out, while in the waiting room might sky rocket your cortisol levels; however, it is essential you make yourself feel at ease. Just remember that the interviewer you’ll be seeing was once an applicant.

Also: try smiling while you speak. In a Ted Talk about body language, Ron Gutman highlights the benefits of smiling though citing the study by UC Berkeley and Wayne State University. Their study observed the width of smiles on yearbook photos and baseball cards featuring different MLB players. The results of the study concluded the wider the person’s smile had been, the longer and happier they had lived.

Don’t forget smiles are contagious, so shine a warm, beaming smile at your interviewer, and it’s likely that they will do the same, putting you both at ease.

Don’ts

  1. Do not be late

The difference between being late and early is the type of first impression you provide to your interviewer. If you feel travel may be an issue, pad your journey with plenty of time. Even consider booking a hotel close to the university or staying over at a nearby friend’s house if possible.

  1. Don’t sell yourself short in interviews

Smiling is a good place to start when it comes to expressing confidence and appearing more confident. Nonetheless, smiling alone won’t get you into college. Learning to ‘sell yourself’ is crucial, and don’t draw attention to your negative attributes or undermine any of your achievements. Especially when facing the frequently asked questions such as, “What is your greatest weakness?” or “What is a skill you could improve upon?”

At first glance, these types of questions imply the interviewer is asking you to address something you lack, when in fact these questions give you an opportunity to turn the question on its head. The lack can be transformed into a quality or an attribute you hold too much of. For example, you could interpret being too obsessive over detail, as the result of your need and strive for perfection.

End your interview with a strong handshake and an appreciative thank you. Good luck!

How Can College Students Benefit from HerpAlert?

We all know how ubiquitous STD’s are, especially if you’re a college student. Nobody wants to be distracted by an STD diagnosis in the midst of studying for finals or writing a term paper, but ultimately your health should always come first. As a student, you have access to your school’s health center, where a number of nurse practitioners are available to treat whatever comes your way. However, not everyone feels comfortable going to a nurse to see if a sore on your lip or a bump on your groin is something more. For a variety of reasons that differ from person to person, we shy away from exposing ourselves to a stranger. Luckily, you can get checked out and treated from the privacy of your dorm room. All you need is a smartphone.

The Most Common Types of Sexually Transmitted Infections

The most common sexually transmitted infection that students across the country contract on college campuses is Chlamydia, and the second is HSV1 (oral herpes) and HSV2 (genital herpes). Chlamydia is one of the most diagnosed STI’s and also one of the most easily curable. In contrast, herpes is a virus, which lives in your body forever. Its symptoms can be so mild that you barely notice them. There are easily accessible antiviral medications, such as Valtrex, that treat and prevent herpes breakouts.

If you get a cold sore (oral herpes) in college, you should seek out a medical professional, but keep in mind, it’s not a life-changing diagnosis. It’s more common than you think. Roughly one out of every six Americans between the ages of 14 and 49 have herpes simplex virus, and most aren’t even aware of it! The virus spreads easily, and because symptoms can be so minor, students don’t realize if, or when, they’re contagious. If you’re sexually active, the odds of coming into contact with HSV1 or HSV2 are fairly decent.

Forget The STD Stigma With Online Guidance

Now, if you suspect you have herpes, you don’t need to worry about expensive doctor visits or prescription medication. Skip the line at the health center and forget about rehearsing the right things to say to a nurse, who has an infinite supply of pamphlets detailing how to practice safe sex. This is not to be mistaken as shrugging off the importance of using condoms and being honest with your partner or partners, but there’s an easier way.

With the rise of telemedicine, you can avoid the stress associated with any social stigma surrounding STDs and still have access to healthcare. If you suspect you might have a herpes related sore, visit www.HerpAlert.com and begin the physician diagnosis questionnaire. Say goodbye to making appointments, waiting rooms, and hospital garments with the easiest and fastest route to medical help at the tip of your fingers. Due to the nature of oral and genital herpes, time is of the essence. In order to minimize the outbreak and speed up the healing process, treatment should be started within 12 to 24 hours at the onset of symptoms.

The website will prompt you to upload photos of the area, describe your symptoms, and ask for medical history which is then reviewed by top-tier board-certified physicians. All your information goes through the website’s encrypted web servers, which are dedicated to securing every patient’s data. A doctor will get back to you within one to two hours of your submission, and if you’re positive for HSV, a prescription is called into your desired pharmacy so you can start treatment that day!

Founded by a leading dermatologist, our team is made up of top-tier doctors, across the country, who have a depth of experience diagnoses and treating a sexually transmitted diseases. Our mission is to remove the stigma associated with herpes by reducing outbreaks and making them as painless as possible. The moment you submit your photos for diagnosis, we get back to you quickly and immediately send a prescription to your local pharmacy. So you can stop the progression and get on with your life, whether that means finding Mr. Right, or Mr. Right Now.

Sustainable Gems for Graduation Day

If a scene from the film Black Diamond comes to mind when you think about gems, you’ll be glad to know that this is not an image you need to associate with the pearl industry.

Most gemstones are non-renewable – the supply of gems like diamonds is finite and won’t be replaced in our lifetime, while many mining sites cause a lot of ecological damage.

But, the pearl industry is different.

Pearls: Nature’s Gems

Pearls are the only gems that are produced by living creatures; they are organic, created inside living mollusks. They’re also renewable – one mollusk can produce multiple pearls at a time and the mollusks themselves can also reproduce. It only takes a few years for pearls to form, in stark contrast with diamonds, which take between 1-3 billion years to be created.

Oysters are remarkably sensitive organisms, which makes it extremely important that the water and surrounding areas are clean and healthy, otherwise the pearls won’t grow. A pearl farmer who cares about the long-term health of his farming operation must use environmentally-responsible farming practices to produce high-quality pearls now, and for decades to come, unlike with other gemstones where the future of the environment is hardly a concern.

Formerly, pearls could only be found growing wild in nature, and they were extremely rare – only royalty and the extremely wealthy could afford them. But today, most pearls you can buy are cultured or produced on pearl farms of which about 95% are produced in China, which is also where our flagship product, Edison pearls are cultivated.

What Are Edison Pearls?

Edison Pearls are the brainchild of Zhan Weijian, president of Grace Pearls located in Zhuji, a town in the Zhejiang Province in east-central China. The first cultivated pearls were farmed successfully in 1916, admittedly of low quality, and over time the quality has improved tremendously and could even be compared to the quality of natural pearls. But Edison Pearls took the industry to a whole new level when they were introduced to the market in 2010.

What makes Edison pearls so unique is that these pearls are smooth with intense luster, they’re almost perfectly round, they come in sizes of up to ¾ of an inch and there are a wide range of different colors available such as: purple, pink, bronze, dark gold, and champagne.

When asked why he chose the name, Zhan Weijian said that “Thomas Edison, for all his intelligence, could not invent pearls or diamonds.”

The superior quality of Edison pearls put them in a class of their own. And what makes them even more remarkable is the fact that they are surprisingly affordable. Women throughout the world are now able to afford pearls of superior quality in any shape, size, and color they prefer.

Our Trade-In System: Recycle Your Old Jewelry

At Timeless Pearl, we’re committed to helping women look beautiful and feel confident with a wide range of charming jewelry designs that reflect her inner beauty and personal style.

We’re also committed to the environment and our impact in the community. We only partner with suppliers who follow sound sustainability practices in their pearl farming operations.

But we’re now taking our commitment even further. We’re introducing a new trade-in system where you can exchange your old pearl jewelry for something new and depending on the quality of the used jewelry, you can get up to 80% back on your purchase price.

It’s simple. You just complete the trade-in application form on our website to receive a return label, you’ll then post the old jewelry to us, and once we’ve inspected the jewelry, you’ll receive a cash back coupon via email which you can then use when making your next purchase.
