TMZ reported the three time Grammy-nominee singer El DeBarge was arrested outside Los Angeles on Monday on a charge of suspicion of drug possession with intent to sell.
El DeBarge was picked up by the police when officers believed they observed El DeBarge participating in a drug deal. His bail is set at $30,000, and he is due back in court in early April.
This is not the first time the singer of hits like “Rhythm of the Night” and “Who’s Johnny” has been taken down for drug possession. This is his third time being arrested for drug possession since 2001. He was even sentenced to 2 years in prison after he violated parole when police found crack and drug paraphernalia on his person.
El DeBarge dropped out of a national tour over a year ago to check himself into rehab. The R&B singer/songwriter talked about his struggles with addiction, "Drugs are a very strong, outside aggression," he said. "It attacks leadership, and it just attacks things and it gives you a challenge that you really don't want to have. But, you have to be strong and we all have the strength."
The Detroit native, El DeBarge has had a tumultuous life. His mother published a book telling of a household full of domestic abuse and child abuse, and it would seem El is still suffering the consequences. His brother is currently in jail for assault with a deadly weapon and drug related charges. El DeBarge has fathered 11 children.
