1. Don’t top off. Filling your tank past its shut off point will cause gas to leak or seep out of your gas tank.
2. Use cruise control. Using the cruise control is the best way to ensure you aren’t accelerating too much or wasting gas. Fast acceleration, sudden stops and sudden starts are all ways you may be wasting gas. You also want to avoid revving your engine.
3. Properly inflate your tires. Having your tires properly inflated will save gas and will prevent your tires from wearing out quickly. Tire gauges are very inexpensive and easy to use.
4. Don’t use your car for storage. The more weight your car is carrying around, the more fuel it will need to run. An extra 250 pounds will cause your car to lose an extra mile per gallon. Empty out your trunk and only carry the necessities.
5. Slow down. The faster you drive, the more fuel you burn up. For example, slowing from 65 miles per hour to 55 miles per hour will save you 2 miles per gallon.
6. Tighten your gas cap. If your gas cap is lose, gas can evaporate out of your tank. Every time you get gas, take a second to make sure your cap is on securely. If you gas cap is loose or cracked, you need to get a new one. They aren’t expensive, and they are available at any automotive supply store.
7. Don’t rest your foot on the brake. When you aren’t braking, your foot should be completely off the brake and resting on the floor. Even the slightest amount of pressure will cause your car to have to work harder and use more gas to maintain speed.
