Does anyone really get enough indie pop in their daily music diet? I thought I would have been spewing bile by now about the constant flow the genre produces, but I can’t find anything critical to say about Par Avion.
This Los Angeles quartet consists of Zachary Ginder on the bass, Zandro Urbiztondo ticklin’ the ivories, Andrew Rivera on the drums and Paul Avion on guitar. Unlike other groups who stick to a certain melodic formula for their songs, Par Avion doesn’t settle in one method for very long.
It’s fairly obvious that Par Avion draws from a wide variety of musical inspirations. At times, they have the indie traits of Death Cab for Cutie, but other tracks have the upbeat vocal mixes of The Beatles and other similarly minded British pop. This diverse base makes each song convincingly stand out from the next with only the members remaining the same.
Their new single “Art School Dropout” completely hinted of early Stone Temple Pilots, with their matching vocal and bass lines. It smacks of indie rock, opening with the lyrics “Wal-Mart roller pig / Go to Disneyland / Deer head on the wall / Don’t make me stand.” I barely understand it, but I definitely like it.
“Fibromyalgia” will remind of you Weezer with its distinct vocal harmonies, distorted guitar and constant bass strumming in the background. The corresponding music video is all over the place, but fitting for a song with such an obscure title. For the uninformed (as I was until I looked it up), Fibromyalgia is a currently unexplained syndrome that causes connective and muscle tissue pain. According to the band’s Wikipedia page, the song was written for Annie Hardy of the Los Angeles band Giant Drag, who suffers from the condition. See? Now you’ve learned something today.
“Stand Up Be a Man” stands out with a skillful bass line from Ginder and Urbiztondo’s simple indie-pop piano. Avion proves he is on par with other indie singers of our day with better connection to his lyrics and a pleasant delivery. This is one of my favorite tracks from Par Avion.
Racking up the reviews, Par Avion has garnered well-deserved positive attention from magazines such as SPIN, Skope, Sentimentalist, and America’s College Music. With all that press, rest assured they won’t waste your time. Keep an ear on Par Avion, because they’ll hit it big any day now.
