At one time or another, it has happened to the best of us. We lie awake at night, wondering how in the world we fell for it. Now the Michigan Wolverines and their fans are wondering how it managed to happen to them.
Last Saturday, Michigan Stadium got Rick Roll’d.
As the stadium announcer proclaimed that the band would be playing Finger Eleven’s “Paralyzer”, the Wolverine fans undoubtedly expected a terrible rendition of a terrible song. What they got, instead, was the surprise of a lifetime - both in their halftime performance and the result of the game. Just seconds after the start of the song, the announcer proclaimed “Wait a minute, that’s not ‘Paralyzer’. Oh no, Michigan Stadium - you got Rick Roll’d!” Boy, did they ever.
The Wolverines went into Saturday’s game against Toledo desperately needing a victory. They were in front of their home crowd against a lackluster team and hoping to improve their record back to .500. Instead, Michigan fell to the Rockets 13-10, marking their first ever loss to a MAC team and its worst start in school history at 2-4.
But the Wolverines need not worry. Coaches love to stress the importance of hard work and determination, even in terrible losses such as this. So if anything, coach Rich Rodriguez and his Michigan squad can look back at this game as a huge victory not just for Toledo, but for the world of sports altogether.
My friends, it gives me great honor to announce that “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley is the new “Who Let the Dogs Out?” I’ve always wanted to believe it and Saturday’s game finally sealed the deal for me.
