Tax day freebies for the poor college student in all of us

In honor of national tax day, companies are offering tax day freebies like food; also, discounts and deals on April 15th

Rhiannon Banda-Scott

Sure, tax day is one of the most dreaded days of the year for those of us who like to wait until the last minute to get things done. But an impressive number of restaurants (such Chick-fil-A and Taco Del Mar), shops and stores are slightly lifting the dreariness of the day by offering tax day deals, including freebies, deals and discounts.

For college students or anyone else who loves to save a couple bucks, what could be better?

Online reports from Huliq News hypothesize that the tax day freebies are the start of a new tradition.

With a crumbling economy, businesses may be trying to lure in customers by tying tax day freebies and discounts to a date completely dedicated to money (parting with it, specifically).

According to the Roanoke Times, in honor of the national tax day, MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream & Treatery is offering a self-titled “e-cone-omic ice cream stimulus package” where customers can score a single scoop serving of ice cream for free. Check your local Maggie’s to see if your store is participating because free ice cream is always a bonus.

If you’re looking more toward saving money on dinner, a variety of online blogs are reporting that T.G.I.Friday’s is giving restaurant-goers $5 Bonus Bites gift cars to put towards the purchase of beverage and food items valued at $15 to $25.

While you can’t use your Bonus Bites toward the purchase of alcohol, if you drop more than $25 on tax day, you’ll be buying yourself a $10 gift card. Even better: if you are member of the frequent customer program, you’ll get double the points this month.

Mexican-food lovers and those looking for a little spice, can head over to Taco Del Mar where the restaurant chain is offering a free taco to anyone who can prove they’ve already filled their taxes. To get your free coupon, check out their site to get a coupon via e-mail; nothing like a little incentive to get your taxes done!

Fan of Chick-fil-A? Then save your receipt for today’s me, then bring it back within 30 days (starting April 16th). You’ll get the same items for free.

For the P.F. Changs’ lover, your bill could be 15% cheaper if you head their way tonight. April 15, 15 percent off, the whole idea makes sense and for somewhere as tasty as P.F. Changs, a little chunk of change cut of your bill is a pretty sweet deal.

To finish your day off on a sweet note, head over for free dessert at your local Cinnabon where they are giving away free Cinnabon bites. Says Cinnabon president Geoff Hill: “At Cinnabon, we believe that Life Needs Frosting.”

“Everyone deserves to splurge and treat themselves every once in awhile, so we’d love to be the frosting on our guests’ day, particularly on days as painful as Tax Day,” added Hill. Get your healthy dose of frosting between 5 and 8 p.m. tonight at Cinnabon and finish your tax day off accomplished and full.

Our Take

Looks like it’s going to be a busy day for myself running around looking for the best deals on my favorite foods. Maybe drinks at TGIF’s, dinner at P.F. Changs and dessert at Cinnabon? Can’t hurt to try! Let us know at College News if you know of any other deals or freebies being offered today!
