Student kicked out of school for working as gay porn star

Grove City College suspends John Gechter upon finding his work online

Lisa Kilian

John Gechter, a student at Grove City College--known asGCC)-- was suspended from school this week when he was discovered working as a gay porn star, according to Fox News.

Gechter had been acting in porn for two years, and had successfully kept it a secret, until one student, using one of GCC’s campus computer illegally, happened to find John at work as Vincent DeSalvo, his pornography alias.

Upon recognizing Gechter, the student reportedly sent the images in a email to a couple of friends. Eventually, the email ended up reaching the entire student body and, of course, on the computer screen of the school’s administration.

Grove City College, a self-described “Liberal arts Christian college,” has since suspended John for sexual misconduct, participating in a public display of pornography, and violating the values of GCC.

But Gechter says its GCC who is violating his rights.

According to Fox, John Gechter began modeling when he was 19. Upon entering school, he had been working four jobs to cover living expenses and tuition but modeling made better money.

One day, Gechter was approached at a shoot by a man who told him he had a great look for porn, and that he could make much more than he was making now.  Tired of scraping by with the little he could afford, Gechter immediately took the offer.

Soon, Gechter was attending class during the week and flying out to Miami, LA, and Chicago on the weekend as Vincent DeSalvo making three to five thousand dollars per scene.

For two years, no one at GCC knew Vincent DeSalvo existed, not even John’s roommate. But now, Gechter has been suspended indefinitely. Gechter wasn’t ready for the strict punishment he has received. “I never considered the school would kick me out for doing something legal,” he told WYTV.

But even worse has been the treatment he has received from fellow students. He says he has received about 150 hate mails and walking on campus is now accompanied with looks and stares. One student even threw fruit at Gechter.

“Students were the first ones to condemn and judge me, and I was really saddened by their response,” he told the Herald.

Gechter has since withdrawn from GCC stating that he already has 135 credits, and will finish elsewhere. His degree will still come from GCC, via the mail. He has also decided to sue the school for damages and the individual students that sent hate mail for slander and defamation of character.

His lawyers assert to the Miami Herald that Gechter has “faced significant discrimination and an unfair ultimatum in the situation regarding his expulsion...Even if John were an actor in the adult industry, in no way is his image as a performer associated with anything on campus...In fact, the identity of performers is a priority in the adult industry and it would be extremely difficult to prove if the person performing in these materials is even John, much less associate him with the college.”

Ms. Clingensmith, GCC’s communications director, said, “We are one of the most conservative Christian colleges in the country, so why would he be surprised this would cause a stir?”

Our Take

Perhaps it is a little naive to assume that working as a gay porn star wouldn’t upset a conservative Christian school, but surely, the initial punishment does not fit the crime.

It’s certainly true that GCC student code of conduct states that students are not allowed to engage in promiscuous sexual behavior. However, the code of conduct does not state that promiscuous behavior is even grounds for suspension.

Although it does say in the code of conduct that students must be courteous and respectful to one another, the hate mail, absent of punishment save for the John’s lawsuit, is evidence that that value is not being adhered to either.

When Ms. Clingensmith was told of John’s ostracism, she said the faculty and staff had seen him working out in the gym and eating in the cafeteria. “If he felt that threatened, he would not go to these things,” she said. Another student commented, “The school’s intolerance has become more pronounced because of this incident.”

Say what you want but if it looks like a duck, quacks like duck, it probably is a hypocritical duck.

As a Grove City student, I can assure you that, while most of the student body frankly supports the suspension, I know of almost no one that is vindictive against him in any way.

I’m sorry you disagree with the suspension, but this is a private university with no public funding whatsoever.  Every student here knows precisely what the college stands for and what is expected of them.  The college is still sending him his degree as soon as he finishes the two courses elsewhere.

Also btw - that’s not a picture of Grove City College - that’s just a church (Tower Presb.) in town.

“However, the code of conduct does not state that promiscuous behavior or even engaging in a public display of pornography is even grounds for suspension.”

Not the case. The student handbook explicitly states that the penalty for sexual misconduct is suspension, a penalty that I have personally seen enforced without regard to sexual orientation.

Every incoming student signs an agreement to abide by the rules, and rules are re-distributed at the beginning of each year, as are reminders of penalties. The college has also stated that if he chose to withdraw from the pornography industry, he’d be welcome to return.

Essentially this boils down to a contract dispute. He agreed to abide by the college’s rules when he decided to attend. If you break the rules, you shouldn’t complain when you have to accept the predetermined consequences.

Please be sure you’re clear on the facts before you start editorializing.

I think it’s a pretty huge lapse in common sense when you can expect to star in gay pornography and still think that a private Christian university would totally be cool with that.

You all need to wake up and smell the 21st century. I understand and value any private organizations right to govern themselves...but come on. Live and let live? Quit being so Victorian and prude? Was the student hurting anybody other than himself? Was he hurting anyone at all for that matter? Will gay porn be the destroyer of worlds and the coming of the apocalypse? Will any safe sexual activity with condom use hetero or homosexual between two consenting non-blood-adults hurt anyone?  Nay.

I sometimes wonder if we’re living in a new dark age where freedom is valued second to religiously based so-called “morality.” Perhaps we are. And for that, I am truly worried about the future.

Feel free to burn me at the stake for being such a heretic. I’ll gladly die in the name of a new humanist based morality that is free of all forms of hypocrisy and hatred.

@ joe shmo
oh please. You’re just overreacting because of the “christian” part attached to the school. Even if this was an “atheist” PRIVATE school and no “religion” was enforced, if the rules are broken, there is punishment.

NO ONE said he has to stop doing gay porn, he just can’t do it while attending a GCC.

By the way, try having the “live and let live” attitude while being the president of the us. “It’s okay, let him have sex with 10 different women a week, it’s not hurting the country or his ability to govern it”

Give me a break.

I agree that if a person breaks the rules, he should be punished in accordance to the stated rule.  John Getcher did agree to the rules when he decided to attend this particular college.

That being said, I do not believe that a college should have the right to dictate personal conduct such as sex.  That Mr. Getcher has chosen to sell his image is a private matter that I believe should be outside the scope of the dictates of the college unless Mr. Getcher specifically implicates the school.

In conclusion, I think that it would have been wise for Mr. Getcher to have chosen another college to attend.  However, I wonder at the underlining cause for Mr. Getcher’s foray into porn.  According to the article, if true, Mr. Getcher was not making enough money in other pursuits.  I would expect a Christian College to provide sufficient financial aid.  Also, I seem to remember Jesus preaching forgiveness.  I would hope that the college would consider giving Mr. Getcher more financial aid that would allow Mr. Getcher to give up porn as a job.  I also hope that the other students will learn to be forgiving, to remember perfection exists only with God.  All mortals sin.  Perhaps the other students would do well to remember that they too sin in attacking another student, when they could be working to help him out of his financial crisis.  Open mind, open hearts.
