Reading takes on a whole new meaning at Miami Dade College

Six women attempt to set the record for the "Longest Reading Aloud Marathon by a Team"

There have been a lot of crazy stunts pulled to get into the Guinness Book of World Records. I have read numerous stories of people who stood on their head for three hours, or tried to eat 18 banana cream pies in an hour.  It is no surprise why one would want to do such things.

First of all, it is a chance for someone to get their fifteen minutes of fame, and second of all, it is to defeat the odds. Today, Miami Dade College had their moment in the spotlight.
Six women began a 10-day reading marathon; their goal is not only to set a record, but also to promote education and respect for human rights.

They will end their reading marathon some time on November 12. For those interested, go to http://www.mdc.edu.iac.live to see the ladies attempt the odds.
The women are all members of the International Solidarity for Human Rights-The New Generation. Their goal is to be in the Guinness Book of World Records for the “Longest Reading Aloud Marathon by a Team.”

The ladies will read 30 articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, for more than 224 hours. The marathon will continue during the Miami Book Fair International that is Nov. 8-15 at the college’s Wolfson Campus.

It has been reported that only 5 percent of the world is aware the Universal Declaration of Human Rights exists and only 1 percent of people have read it. The ladies will repeat the document an estimated 1200 times. The team is required to remain on campus during the entire length of the reading. There will be a 300 square foot perimeter blocked off so that the ladies can have sleeping and eating quarters.

Our Take

I have to say that I truly commend these women for taking such an active role in promoting human rights. With all the wrong in the world it’s nice to see people coming together to promote such a noble cause.

It’s sad to think that only 1% of the world has actually read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. There is still so much discrimination and hate in the world that people need to be aware of their rights. I wish these ladies the best of luck and encourage everyone to check it out!
