Phantom of the Opera 2 opens in not one, but three cities
Andrew Lloyd Webber whores out his phenomenal musical-opera
Kaitlin A. Lipe
Andrew Lloyd Webber is taking the “Phantom of the Opera” fame to a whole new level.
The musical genius will be presenting the sequel to the popular “Phantom” in three different cities at the exact same time: Shanghai, New York City’s Broadway and London, The Daily Mail UK is reporting.
“Phantom” will be the first production to ever open in three countries simultaneously.
“I don’t think you could do this if it wasn’t the sequel to ‘Phantom’,” Webber said. “We have been into the feasibility of rehearsing three companies at once and opening in the three territories.”
The follow-up, entitled “Phantom: Love Never Dies” will take place on Coney Island in Brooklyn, rather than the Paris Opera House, about a decade after the original. Fans will be happy to know that Christine and the Phantom will be reunited as well.
Since it’s opening in 1986, with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the lead roles, “Phantom” has grossed over $7 billion at the box office, playing in 124 cities worldwide.
The cast for the sequel has yet to be decided, but Lloyd-Webber insists as an aside “We are pretty clear who our Phantom is going to be...I can’t say who.”
Our Take: I’m always up for more “Music of the Night.” Bring it!

A sequel, brilliant, but as Megan says, PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! make it a DVD as well, because I also don’t live anywhere near NY, London or Shanghai, and yes Emmy Rossum should be Christine and Gerard Butler should be the Phantom as it wouldn’t be the same if those two roles were played by someone different

Of course it wouldnt be the same if those two didn’t do it...it would be much better. If you have only seen the movie and not the play, you should definitely see it on Broadway because although Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler did a wonderful job in the movie, theyre no where near the level of the performers who are in the Broadway cast at any given moment. They simply do not possess the vocal capabilities or stage presence required for a play as large scale as Phantom. And the movie and the play are two entirely different things, so if a play is out they will not simply record it onto a dvd.

I am really excited about the new phantom of the opera.I did actually audition for the lead of christie but Emmy got the role instead which i think she deserved sooo much more than me and apart from that she can actually sing i do not think i would be very good in a musical anyway, im much better at being in things like Pirates of the Caribbean with Orlando Bloom and Johny Depp, Which by the way there will be a 4th upcoming Pirates movie in July 2009 with Russel Brand who is a brilliant actor.

ALW made TPOM, and yet I have heard nothing of it. It’s 2009, Sir Webber, and we Phans are eager to see, hear, read, watch, breathe, eat, sleep your next masterpiece!

Megan, you suck, because gerard and emmy are not actors or singers. they suck indescribably.
Emmy’s small, almost non-existant whiny voice wouldn’t carry past the edge of the stage.
gerard doesn’t even sing, nor can he pronounce english words normally.
ex- gerard butler: “EYEEEE AM YEUUURR ENGIL”
michael crawford: “I AM YOUR ANGEL!
how retarded is that? hes ugly as shit and hes fat and old too. i can’t imagine HOW he got cast as Erik in the damn movie.

if you were all real fans of Phantom of the Opera you would all know that there is a carry on book called Phantom in Manhatten,
but only if you were a true fan would you know that.
if a sequel was to happen itd be great, but to be honest, P.I.M doesn’t exactly have the greatest foundations for film nor show

@Jodie: PIM is probably not worth reading, but I might try it anyways. I say ALW should do something with Susan Kay’s Phantom. Now THAT was good.

Yes Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler did a good job in the movie, but that was the movie! Has anyone seen a live production, local or big time, of the Phantom? A Broadway production of anything, imo, is way better then anything Hollywood could produce. Not to say the movie was bad, I enjoyed it, but when compared to Broadway...well there is no comparison.

I don’t know whether to be extremely excited or extremely afraid.
I trust Andrew Lloyd Webber, but...sequels. They’re never as good as the original. And, in this instance, you know that everyone is going to be comparing it to POTO, there’s no way you couldn’t. There will be so much hype surrounding this musical, I just hope it doesn’t fall short haha
With that said, I can’t wait to find out who the cast is and (hopefully sooner than later)hear the music!
@ Bonfire: ALW & Susan Kay’s Phantom is my dream musical! lol
If anyone hasn’t read that book and calls themself a phantom ‘phan’, I am so disappointed ^_~

@ “Megan is stupid”
You indeed, are an odd individual.
Haven’t you heard? The setting of the whole story is on Paris, France. What did you expect? That there would not be any accent? Stop being childish and grow up for goodness sake. Gerard Butler is a fine actor and singer. I can’t compare him with Michael Crawford’s amazing singing, but cut him some slack will you? Of course the movie is going to differ greatly than the musical. Emmy Rossum does not have a whiny voice, what are you talking about? She’s seems fine to me for a girl who filmed such an amazing movie at the age of sixteen. So shut it.
If Phantom of the Opera 2 is going to become a movie - I’d be happy to see Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler return to those roles; but if it is set to be onstage, I’d love to see Sarah and Michael. I live in Brooklyn’s Coney Island, so if they do film it there, I might be able to catch a glimpse on the actors. If not, we’ll have to wait and see when it comes out. I hope this sequel won’t be a let-down. I’d be heartbroken to see such a good movie being destroyed, but seeing what Andrew Lloyd Webber did with the first movie, I’m sure he’ll do well.

Oh please no. Gerard Butler was horrible. (No offense)
Truthfully, those who think Gerard Butler was “AMAZING” has obviously not seen the real musical.
I mean Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman would be great to have back as Christine and the Phantom.. but aren’t they a little old to play the roles?
