No wonder Pete Carroll is upset.
After seeing his team trounce Washington 56-0 this weekend, he saw the Trojans drop in the BCS rankings from 5th to 7th.
During his weekly media interview, USC coach Pete Carroll denounced the rankings.
“I don’t understand how the thing works, I don’t really know. Maybe you guys will answer for it one of these days. Maybe you know and I don’t. I’m sure you do ... what is the criteria of the process? Is it to pick the team that has the best season, that has the season that you like the most and feel best about voting for? Or is it the best team at the end of the year, the team that would win a playoff system if you did have it?”
The ranking system has never been widely popular, but new calls for the system to be changed have been echoed recently by more and more fans, including President-elect Barack Obama, who had this to say on Monday Night Football:
“I think it is about time we had playoffs in college football. I’m fed up with those computer rankings. Get eight teams—the top eight teams—right at the end. You get a playoff. Decide a national champion.”
Obama has his fingers on the pulse of the American consciousness. We don’t like ties, we don’t trust rankings, and it ain’t over till it’s over. This is America and it’s about time that we had a real, honest way of deciding who the best college football team in the country is. Computer rankings, coach polls and schedule strength don’t mean a thing to us. In America, you have to earn the right to be called the best in every other profession and sport.
It’s time for the BCS to get its ship right.
It’s about damn time for College Football Playoffs.
