Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh Haiti comments draw fire
Commentators show unique interpretations of accountability, compassion in remarks about the earthquake in Haiti
Jon Graef
Leave it to certain commentators to display unique interpretations of compassion and reason when everyone else is merely adhering to the traditional definitions of the words.
When most people are using their time and efforts to brainstorm ways to help the citizens of Haiti, who have no doubt endured massive suffering after Tuesday’s huge earthquake, Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh opted to use theirs in a decidedly different fashion Wednesday.
Robertson, the go-to guy for agreeing with outlandish premises surrounding victim-blaming after horrific tragedies, said that the reason for Haiti’s earthquake was that the nation-state made a deal with the devil. Lest you think that College News is exaggerating Robertson’s Church Lady-like proclamations, there’s video of Robertson stating the following (via):
Robertson: “Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about. [Haitians] were under the heel of the French...and they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said, ‘we will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.’ True story. And the Devil said, ‘OK it’s a deal.’ Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another.”
Never letting one to get useless facts in the way of good rhetoric, Robertson’s statements conveniently ignore the fact that, like that 80 percent of Haitians identify themselves as Roman Catholics, with Protestants representing a distant second place with 16 percent. But, you know, voodoo is spooky, and even if one person practicing it means that the whole country has gotta go. God had some Old Testament wrathin’ to do, apparently.
But while you could certainly excuse Robertson’s remarks as Pat just being Pat, it takes a certain kind of mind to take a tragedy and politicize it.
(Rush Limbaugh enters the room).
Did anyone else feel a chill?
On his radio program Wednesday morning, Rusty said that President Barack Obama and company would use Haiti to get closer to the “light-skinned and dark-skinned black [communities] in this country” while adding that the U.S. has “already donated to Haiti. It’s called the U.S. income tax.”
Listen to excerpts here and here.
If you were wondering who would be so cynical as to suggest that a president would use a monumental tragedy to gain support amongst a group of voters who already overwhelmingly support him--to the tune of 89 percent who view him favorably, natch--well, now you have your answer.
There’s perhaps a point to be made about private organizations and individuals helping out on their own. But, of course, local churches and government have been helping each other out since Katrina hit. It’s not like they have to be mutually exclusive or anything.
But hey, why deal with subtleties when canned outrage will suffice?

May God have mercy on the souls of these two men who speak of God but show not his love and mercy. Their hearts have shrunk several sizes too small. I pray there is a special place in hell for both of these men.

The clip shown here from CBN does nothing but promote prayer and help for the Haitian people. Pat Robertson has been know to be cooky on many international issues, and has been embarassing to Christians when he does these things. It is a good point that there ARE Christians in Haiti; many even.
Rush makes a political point that this is an opportunity to curry support from a lagging constituency. That’s politics. Every group does this. I don’t see anything diabolical in the point made.
As to Pat’s comment above that because of these two alledgedly lacking mercy, and wanting them to burn in hell for it, is not showing mercy either.
Haiti has suffered unimagineably right at our doorstep for years. We should have been helping more before this tragedy. I am glad we are helping now.

While growing up in a small midwest town, I could have attended any church denomination on any Sunday morning and worshipped with people of differing political views. Today churches in my town are either conservative or liberal. I blame the twisted logic from the likes of Pat Robinson and Rush Limbaugh for that and the lopsided education and shallowness of the some Prodistant clergy.

Normally not one to defend Pat Robertson, but the Haiti Satanic pact thing is an old legend that has been around since the country’s independence. The main people who believe it are the Christian Haitians themselves. Alot of the people down there trying to do some good are...you guessed it: more if them scary, backward Christians. Pat’s theology is a little Pentecostal for my tastes but his statement was more answer to why do bad things happen to good people than a damnation of Haitians who he knows largely agree with his old school views.
As for Limbaugh, Haiti has received billions of dollars in U.S plus international aid over the past 20 years and never ceased being a hell hole so just throwing more money at the problem is clearly not a solution. But I’m sure writing that check will make you feel better, if not the people buried under the rubble.

Yes K, and 9/11 waa because of gays and lesbians,
according to some misguided “religious” spokes persons.
Actually Americans should thank the Haitian Revolution for compelling Napoleon to sell the Louisana Purchase. Otherwise the midwest might be called Southern Quebec today.
Billions how many? Israel gets 3 billion in U.S. Foreign aid EACH year, plus 10 billion in loan gurantees. In AID loan about. Comes out to about 60 billion over 20 years. Divide by a population of 6 million and that comes out to $10,000 per person for per year.
Aid to Haiti just $10 per person per year.
Yep just $10.
Foreign aid to Haiti
This article is part of the series:
Politics and government of
Haiti
Between 1999 and 2004, no new foreign aid to Haiti was sent because political instability made it unlikely that aid would be distributed properly. According to a World Bank report published in 2004, Haiti requires more than US$1.3 billion in aid for 2005 and 2006. In July 2004, a donors’ conference awarded Haïti more than US$1 billion in pledged aid for 2005 and 2006. The United States pledged US$230 million in aid through fiscal year 2006.
[edit] U.S. economic and development assistance
The neutrality of this article is disputed. Please see the discussion on the talk page. Please do not remove this message until the dispute is resolved. (December 2007)
Political insecurity and the failure of Haiti’s governments to invest in developing the country’s natural and human resources contribute significantly to the country’s current state of underdevelopment. U.S. efforts to strengthen democracy and to rebuild Haiti’s economy aim to rectify this condition. The U.S. has been Haiti’s largest donor since 1973. Between the fiscal years of 1995 and 1999, the U.S. contributed roughly $884 million in assistance to Haiti.
Looks like about 2 billion over 20 years.
About 100 million per year divde that by 10 million people and you get about $10.00 per person per year.

As I said in other blogs it was only a matter of time and who would come out with these outrageous remarks. Also once again it comes from people of God who know nothing about Jesus and God what the actual message was. I don’t need to read the Bible to understand that Jesus’s message was only take care of your brothers and sisters. So in conclusion we don’t need more of these nut bags speaking for masses when in fact they represent just a choice few wing nut bags. Don’t need them!

Why don’t we take Rush and Pat and put them under a ton of concrete in Haiti, let’s see what they think about aid then. In the immortal words of Senator Welch, “Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”

K - The current situation is not a matter of “...thowing more money [into] a hell hole” It is simple human empathy for a people who ae in dire need simply to keep from dying. They have immediate need for medical hlp, food, water and shelter. This has nothing to do with past aid, whether or not it as adequate.
The ad hominum statments by the mega millionaires Robertson and Limbaugh are typical of those who have everything they need and feel the rest of the world should just work harder to build themselves up to escape their poverty.

How anyone could politicize a tragedy such as this, is disgusting. What I took from it was that Rush was implying that Obama cares more about black people than America since he proceeded to mention that it took Obama three days to respond to Captain Underpants trying to bomb an airplane. What he fails to recognize is it took Bush 6 days to respond to the shoe bomber and 6 days to respond to Katrina, where people actually died. He is playing to the racist white folks that listen to his show to say “See he isn’t one of us, THEY are getting what they want because one of THEM is in the White House” in not so many words. He is trying to justify why people shouldn’t care about this horrible tragedy and instead blame Obama for not caring about Americans somehow. The hypocrisy is stunning but not surprising.
As far as Robertson goes, it was a stupid comment and is just as bad as when he blamed gays for AIDS. If God cared so much about bad behavior why hasn’t Pat gotten his comeuppance? Or Rush for that matter? Or maybe they are under this false assumption that only non-Christians feel the “wrath” of God. I think if Jesus was watching right now, he’d be deeply saddened. I don’t think he would think that he came to the world as an example and died to change things for people to act like this.
Of course none of that is real, imo, anyway, Haiti didn’t make a pact with “Satan” and the foundation of voodoo came from Christianity. But of course these people think they can just pray the hurt away and everything will be okay. Wonder if they think Katrina and all the other disasters in the U.S. are because the U.S. is so unChristlike? I’m sure they probably do but not because they are uncaring and demonize the poor, no it’s because of homosexuality, abortion, and other “sins” they so readily point out. Funny how their “sins” don’t seem to matter just those they disagree with. I’m so over the hypocrisy and double standards as well as the race baiting.
I guess that is why they love the gipper so much, he knew how to race bait better than anyone else so they try to emulate him in attempts to bring back the “America” they feel entitled to.

Pat, I’m repulsed by the offensive comments too. But your response is contradictory. First you ask, nobly, for God to have mercy on the souls of these men. Then you lay your insincerity for the world to see when you go on to say that you are praying that there is a special place in hell for them. I can see how people get thinking like Robertson does. He probably started out with the same kind of hateful response to legitimate outrages that you are exhibiting.

Well “K”, spoken as a true dittohead. I think Rush has gone too far this time and people...even his deluded fans...should tell him where to stick his hatred. His is nothing more than a fat bigot full of hate...and he’s been taking people like “K” to the cleaners for years. He must be laughing all the way to the bank.
He should be ashamed of himself, but that would require some moral character which he totally lacks.

If you understand spiritual things, which many people have no interest in understanding, you may realize that there is some truth in it. There are many stories of countries or areas that “made pacts with God” so to speak and their communities thrived, drug lords were caught, crops increased, etc. Everyone feels terrible for those people, but it is possible there is a reason that Haiti has been a hell hole as someone called it, while I just looked up the Dominican Republic, Haiti’s neighbor on the island, and it now has the second largest economy in the Caribbean. Why so different?

If anyone wants to listen to/read the Limbaugh comments IN CONTEXT, the info is readily available. He goes on to say that, though we have been hard hit by the economic woes here, we will donate what we can (and it’ll be more than most other countries combined) to help those in need. We always do. His ‘light-skinned’ comment had to do (obviously to cogent thinkers) with the Harry Reid controversy. Have you folks no concept of irony? Get off that high horse before you hurt yourself.

All Robertson and Limbaugh are doing is giving the Christian faith a bad name. Thanks to them, many who would otherwise find meaning and comfort in the Christian faith would now dismiss it out of hand. I think there’s a special brand of punishment for special people like them. Yes - may God have mercy on them.

I happened to tune into the Limbaugh show on Wednesday, and find the ‘out of context’ remarks a rather unfair way of judging the man’s point of view.

In regards to K, there is a small minority of Haitians that believe in that satanic pact legend. In fact, we got aid from neighboring countries to rid the French from the island of Haiti. Lest you forget that we had some great military minds who helped to fight in the American Revolution only 20 years prior.
Limbaugh’s comment was in poor taste no matter the amount of validity. And as far as tax dollars being wasted, it is called the bailout and 700 billion was used to try and upright what Limbaughs buddies turned over. And last time I checked it costs me 4.50 for a loaf of bread.
These men do not deserve any type of sympathy for their callous remarks. Haiti needs aid in the form of food, water, medical care and rescue personal as well as in the future civil engineers to repair the badly damaged infrastructure in Port-au-Prince. Let us all focus on that instead of these attention mongers.
My prayers to my family still over in Haiti.

Just to be clear to those that may donate: you’re not ‘throwing more money at the problem’ as the quote above me suggest. It will help with the immediate crisis at hand. It will be about 90 degrees in Haiti tomorrow and water for the next week or so will be a luxury for most there. So please donate if you can and don’t let foolish quotes like the one above stop you from doing something good

K of course you can’t put your whole name with comments of that nature. Haitians made a pack with the devil, right. Both you and that preacher forgot that for the fight of Americans independence no one minded using the “deviled Haitians”. Check your history, the day Haitians helped The US during their independence fight was a memorable one. They were brave, fought harder than anyone. Maybe America was in on this so called “devil Pack” as they use the people of Haiti then. DO some research next time. No compassion for people suffering.

K- You make a lucid argument about US support of Haiti over the years that no one could argue with and that I was finding helpful - until you end it with that snide remark about the people buried under the rubble. How is that helpful or kind? Don’t you believe that you can advance your agenda without stooping to such rhetoric? No wonder there is such hate and bitterness. It seems Pat Robinson has not emerged from the Old Testament. We have been redeemed by Jesus Christ. Our God is a loving God and does not punish His people in such a way. Pat Robinson apparently has forgotten Jesus washed away our sins by His blood. Pat Robinson needs to ask for forgiveness for his arrogant, condemnation of Christ’s people in Haiti. What will you do for restitution, Pat?

Whatever happened to free speech. Why is it liberals can say whatever they think but conservatives can’t. Pat Robertson was just speaking the truth. Not anything he said was a lie and if you don’t like what he said about making a pact with the devil and the consequences you need to take it up with “THE ALMIGHTY”.God said it Pat is just repeating what God’s word says. And if you don’t like what Rush says don’t listen. Alot of people agree and love him.

Pat points out the real problem in the conservative christian movement: Those that they recognize as christian and those they pay lip service. All my life I heard Catholics aren’t Christians in the churches of the bible belt. Now when they want their vote we are all christians. People like Pat think they are the only christians and it seeps out sometimes.

I am not in favor of what Pat Robertson and/or Rush Limbaugh have said, but these two comments made me laugh:
“May God have mercy on the souls of these two men who speak of God but show not his love and mercy. Their hearts have shrunk several sizes too small. I pray there is a special place in hell for both of these men.”
“This is despicable. Pat, there is a special place in hell for them. It is reserved for hypocrites and haters.”
You can’t ask God to have mercy on someone and then pray they go to hell. Talk about a hypocrite. If God’s mercy exists (and it does!), it exists for everyone! I’m not saying everyone goes to Heaven (though they might), but it’s wrong to hope ANYONE goes to hell. We pray that all evil-minded people have a change of heart and eventually make it to heaven.

I don’t know about any pacts with the devil, but I do know that the most common religion in Haiti today is Voodoo. God tells us in the New Testament, 1Cor. 10:21 You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.

As my wife and I sat in horror last night watching the tragic events unfold in Haiti, right after viewing a clip of President Obama’s briefings on the subject, I remarked that it was only a matter of time before someone would say that the president was rushing to the aid of these horribly affected people for political gains, and to appeal to his “own people”. Well, we’re white, and we consider ourselves the Mr. Obama’s “own people.” What pride we took in seeing this man take the lead in striving to provide desperately needed aid to such a severely affected population.
We were more proud of the efforts shown in less than 24 hours, than we were ashamed of the response by the Bush administration’s response to the poor victims of Hurricane Katrina, whose homes were in our very own back yard.

Many of you are talking about things that you don’t understand...I know I don’t understand why tragedies occur...and I probably won’t understand until Jesus comes back. I do know that selecting certain verses of scripture to justify our own beliefs is wrong. I also understand that thousands of people have been injured and killed and that those who have survived need food, water and shelter. Everything else is irrelevant. Pat Robinson should be ashamed of himself and those of you who are supporting what he said should be ashamed of yourselves for exhibiting such hateful attitudes.

There is NO for Rush’s comments. In context out of context....... To use this horrific tragedy to advance your political views, or even to be intentionally controversial for ratings sake… to make more money on top of his 100’s of millions is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. The fact that he has such a broad listening audience should lead him instead to asking his ditto heads to do all that they can to help these poor suffering people. He could actually “make a difference” as he supposedly wants to do. He is in it to make the millions that he does and there is no virtue whatsoever. God bless the poor. I’m stunned by the heartlessness of this man.

I guess Pat and Rush are the only non-sinners in the world and therefore are eligible to judge those of us who sin regularly. Their warmth and humanitarianism are models to which I aspire every day. I sure wish I knew the “TRUTH” as well as they do. NOT!

What bothers me most about such idiotic comments is that is insinuates that God is a hateful, petty jerk who can’t forgive people and only cares about hurting/punishing them. Of course the idea that Haitians ever swore allegiance to “Satan” is absurd in itself, but if were at all true, you would think god would want to save and help these people rather than hurt them more. In other words, it paints God as a horrid being that frankly doesn’t deserve worship or praise of any kind, and it’s remarks like these that make me thank God every day that I’m an atheist.

The Good Samaritan knew who his neighbor was. That was the point of Christ’s parable. And Haitians are our neighbors and our brothers and sisters in Christ. And, when we come before the Almighty, all of us even Rush and Pat, will have to account for how we cared for our neighbors. What if He asks us “why did you let my children in Haiti suffer so?” Let us all be prepared to answer to Him.

CindyLee- Pat was wrong on so many levels. He said “True story” and didn’t even know which Napoleon was involved. Apparently the FACT that 80% of Haitians are Roman Catholics and another 14+% Protestant slipped his mind also. I don’t know what God you or Pat pray to, but the one in my Bible never said that Haitians made a pact with Satan. The God in my Bible says we will not bear false witness, among many other sins that Pat participates in daily. As far as Rush goes, why oh why does anyone even listen to a convicted felon, drug addict, that is so starved for attention that any press is good press as long as someone is quoting him? He’s just an idiot.

First of all, our hearts and prayers need to go out to these people. And of course our nation and the world community need to come to their aid. In context or not, what Limbaugh said was woefully lacking in compassion and totally inappropriate. But what Pat said was quite different. His statement, if you actually watched it, is simply stating that he believes that this is a judgment for their actions with this devil pact. It wasn’t as if he was saying “Ah ha, look what you get, you evil Haitians!” He didn’t say he wished this earthquake upon them. Even his voice revealed that he was very sympathetic about their plight. If he sincerely believes this is a consequence of a government whose leadership denied God and he wants to share it with people, then why get upset with him? Is he not entitled to his opinion? And, who is anyone to say with absolute confidence that he is not right?
So to a non-believer such comments may seem preposterous, and even I, as a Christian, have no idea why this earthquake hit Haiti. But, the Bible does teach that there are judgments on countries. And, at the end of the age, disasters will increase with frequency and severity. Of course the individual believers that die will have salvation, but the countries may suffer wrath.
It is interesting to note that the History Channel did a couple of shows on Bible codes. Some of those deciphering these codes believe there could be a significant earthquake in Los Angeles in 2010. Check it out for yourself.
And I’ll just close by saying that those who have not received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior have much bigger problems ahead of them than any earthquake of any magnitude!
John

Rush suggested that people SHOULD DONATE TO HAITI through churches and other organizations, he did not think donating through whitehouse.gov was the best way.
He is correct in saying that religious organizations get more of each $ donated to the people that need it, versus the government.

First of all, I do not have a problem with either comment. Both were true and valid. Second of all, everyone here who posted who is all for the “aid” for Haiti, go right ahead. Give all you can. I, on the other hand, will continue to donate my money, time, and efforts here in MY OWN COUNTRY. We have a high population on homelessness, out of work, and starvation here. why don’t we take care of home first, sometimes, and let the other nations help out. We have over 4 TRILLION DOLLARS of our own debt, I am being taxed unconscienably,my family members are being taxed, America is on the brink of bankruptcy, companies are still laying people off, and we have millions of starving children here, but we help Haiti? Were is the aid for OUR children, OUR families, and OUR UNEMPLOYED. I think America should be ALL HELPED OUT BY NOW.

Rich:
“I don’t need to read the Bible to understand that Jesus’s message was only take care of your brothers and sisters.”
Actually, no, Jesus’s message is that only those who believe in Him and repent will be forgiven of their sins. You could have known that if you had actually read the Bible.

Wow; it never ceases to amaze me that the human race still clings to the religion thing! Pat Robertson is an evil, vile human; Rush has been on welfare; cheated on his wives, and avoided military service because of anal lesions yet they are the “moral” voices of America?
WAKE UP PEOPLE!
If one thing has prevented the human race from achieving peace and prosperity it is religion. The “God” of the OT smote over 2.8 million people. Thats a loving god? You people got to get over this; the only reason for religion is so powerful men can use it to keep the masses in check.

You can help Haiti by donations, grass roots efforts such as fund raisers, and asking others to help (or, IF they’ve helped !)
Pat Robertson, take note: Mohandas Gandhi said: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

Rush’s commentary on Haiti… is very misplaced and borders on cruel. I understand his overt vehemence against the Obama regime, but how can one not couch those feelings when so much HUMAN suffering is being experienced by ALL in Haiti? That INCLUDES missionaries and peoples of many different races. Natural disasters are not discriminiatory as individuals can be.

The people who are suffering, hungry and homeless are not politicians...they are our fellow man and if you want to bring God into it...it is my belief that God is giving each and every one of us an opportunity to do the right thing for our fellow man

That’s mighty Christian of you to feel that way about all those poor dead people, most of whom are Christian, Cindy Lee.
Nobody said there was anything wrong with Free Speech. Most of us, however, do understand that the rantings of people who are hypocrites and liars are just asking for criticism from those who also believe in Free Speech. It is my right as a US citizen to speak my thoughts about what those two very UNchristian “christians” are saying about anybody.
Like somebody else said, quoting certain verses of the Scripture in order to make your twisted version of the “truth” is very, very wrong.
The Scripture should be taken IN ITS ENTIRETY and nobody but God, Jesus and the Apostles have the right to interpret anything in the Bible.
By the way, “a lot” is two words.

I have enjoyed so many of your comments. I was Lutheran and work for a Catholic church, to this date, I have not had direct comments from the Trinity, and therefore have to rely on the teachings of “the Book” Christ when on earth taught his followers to “Love your Neighbor as yourself” and further “what you do for the least of these you do for me” I have great compassion for the people of Haiti, and know only too well the statement “there but for the grace of God go I” Pat Robertson on the other hand I will have to seek compassion for, to me he is like the pharisees, he has a tv pulpit and instead of leading those that follow him into the light of compassion and love, he preaches contempt.
Russ Limbaugh on the other hand, I see as a drug addict socialpath, who I have never seen display compassion or empathy. Who makes millions playing to the hatred and contempt of the people who listen to him. He is an entertainer who is not entertaining. This is someone we all need to pray for, the money hasn’t fixed or he wouldn’t need the drugs, the fame hasn’t brought out happiness for him, he only shows misery. I would not want his life, I have been there and foudnd “Hell on Earth”

There is a price to pay for all of our freedoms in the good ol’ US of A. We have to listen to these two whether we like it or not. We also have the choice as to whether or not we are going to follow their lead. By voicing OUR opinions, we are doing our part to not let bigotry, hatred and misinformation determine what we are going to do to help. I would not wish this tragedy on anyone. Not even them. They obviously are not capable of putting themselves in the shoes of those who are suffering. Let God deal with those two, and the rest of us keep doing what we can to help. I think that is the Christian way. It may not get us all the way into Heaven, but it can’t hurt our chances either.

Rush’ comments were totally taken out of context and he was trying to make a point. He didnt say not to contribute but rather go through a non-governmental agency. Its funny how libs like to ignore the facts and are ignorant to the fact that people(obama, sharpton) would actually use a horrible disaster such as this for personal and political gain.

“Thank God every day that I’m an atheist”? I don’t get that remark. You don’t believe in God and you have the right to do that, but God believes in you and one day you will face him and regret your decision to ignore him. As for Pat Robertson, it’s not for us to decide if he is christian or not. If he is reciting history concerning the Haitian people, where is the foul? The term “making a pact with the devil” doesn’t have to mean literally making a pact. It can mean people making a bad decision and having to pay for it later.
For you who say Limbaugh is a hypocrite, how so? He does not profess to being a born again believer. He has not said don’t give to help those people down there, he said our government has given that nation boatloads of money and what do they do with it? There is very little evidence any significant amount of money ever goes to the people. Like most, if not all, 3rd world countries money given goes to the corrupt governments and the US is not much different. If you don’t like what these media people say, don’t listen. I don’t pay attention to the dribble coming out of our current presidents mouth or any of his robots.

this is not for posting, it’s for the the people who have to “approve” of what I say. You are the worst kind of hypocrites. You only want to publish who agrees with your bizarre views and ignore we who have opposing views that might make sense. This site is a joke.

RobbyBoy, how can you “thank God every day that” you’re “an atheist?” That comment alone shows you are very conflicted in your beliefs.
In any case, don’t judge God based on what fallible humans say about him. Try praying and reading the Bible, maybe start with the Book of John, and get to know Him yourself. You’ll find that 1)He is a good, loving and merciful God. 2)He has given people free will and we cause many of our problems ourselves by the poor choices we make. 3)He is a perfect balance of justice and mercy. While He is incredibly patient, there comes a time when He has to punish evil. That doesn’t mean He’s petty--it just means He’s just. He is God, after all, which means He has the authority to do as He please.

Haiti’s last earthquake was over 200 years ago. Why don’t these people have better water, better living conditions? They have a President who managed to build himself a magnificent PALACE...where was the help to the people? When people are looking for places to lay away from the rubble why aren’t those lush palace grounds open to the people instead of being patroled by men with machine guns???

If you think that approving comments wishing death toward Robertson and Limbaugh in a public forum is appropriate, then I guess I’ll have to wear that hypocrite badge proudly.
As far as only posting views that agree with our own, I’ll have to recommend that you check out comments by “K”, “Tamela,” “PK”, “Furio” “Cindylee”, “tess” “momsaid” and “kathyrn” and, well, you, to see posts that espouse views contrary to our own.
But hey, if you want to help me moderate comments, I’d be happy to send you an application for an internship. It’s non-paying though, so…

I can’t beleive they said this. It is so sad. I am a Christain and I admit that for a minute I said “why are we going to support the Hatians when Americans are suffering?” I quickly realized that this was a terrible thought and that Americans should support these poor people who are faced with such a tragic situation. It is our duty as human beings. If Pat Robinson is a Christian then he would realize that supporting the Haitans is a way to evangelize. Regardless of one’s religion, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, they are people first. Christians should reach out to those in need regardless! What would Jesus do. FYI--All Christians are not idiots!

Look, stop making one individual represent a group. It’s not true and ideology does not parallel across the board. It causes confusion and division. Neither of these people’s views equate and is only a self centered attempt to gain popularity in the media. And your helping! Stop it! I’m a Christian and a Republican but I do not vote down the party lines nor attend church. And I don’t use the titles because of these types of characterizations. My heart goes out to the children who lost their parents. They are innocent and deserve help from the global communities. Here’s a thought: do them better when rebuilding this time around! All should learn from the mistakes in the past and repair for the future so tragedies like this can be avoided. No one deserves to lose their parents. None! So let’s do our best and God will bless those who help.

Two jerks with no compassion. EVERYTHING with these two is either the fault of the victim or people they dislike (Rush’s hatred for Obama) are disingenuous in the actions. Compassion comes from the heart and both of these men have none.

Wow. What a horrible tragedy! Thousands of people are dying. Some are dying in their sins. Some are dying and going home to Jesus. More will die before this is over. God “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” He is not judging and immediately punishing the unsaved as He did in the Old Testament. He only treats Believers as sons and as our Heavenly Father He disciplines. “For what son is not disciplined by his father?” But Judgement comes AFTER death. “it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,”
For the ones who are still alive, there is hope. And Christians are called to share this hope: 1 Peter 3:15 says, “but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;”
“ALL have sinned and fall short” and “the wages of sin is death” but “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” God made Jesus “who knew no sin to become sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Jesus has already paid the price for our sins. We are forgiven If we believe He died, was buried, and rose again FOR US. By faith we can receive “the free gift of God” which is “eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved”
For many in Haiti (and here in the US) eternal destiny is coming soon. And many will be missing out on this gift. Can you find it in your heart to pray for their salvation?

In reference to Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh it is a matter of what they should have said which is “Give to a charity of your choice. Let’s help these people so desperately in need.” What they did say was totally unnecessary and displayed a lack of not only compassion but commonsense.

Great that so many people are responsive to this issue...it means we have lots of people who care about hurting people. It’s unfortunate that the liberal media slants certain statements or takes them out of context. Prime example, Mr. Limbaugh never suggested not donating to Haiti, rather to donate thru reputable agencies designed for disaster relief. Aren’t we Americans fed up with the way Washington takes our money and blows, squanders and misuses it? Now here we are spending valuable personal time debating this garbage when we could be doing something so much more useful...maybe researching the best organization to donate to the precious people of Haiti???

Rush spoke the truth when he questioned the logic/reasoning of making contributions through the WhiteHouse.com web site. His argument was that their are many agencies (Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc) that are providing humanitarian and disaster relief to the people in Haiti and can be accessed directly. He questioned whether the White House would use the information garnered (EMail address, etc.) to send political campaign material and/or solicit campaign contributions. Additiinaly, his comments regarding the use of past United States aid to Haiti and the mismanagement by the corrupt Haitian officials is true. The U.S. has spent millions of dollars in aid to Haiti with few dollars actually reaching the intended source( the people of Haiti.) Rush never discouraged his listeners from making donations to Haian relief, just making it through the White House web site.

It doesn’t appear that either person’s statement has gained them “popularity in the media”...quite the opposite. Regardless of where one stands on this issue, these men are taking lots of negative heat. Maybe we should take their ENTIRE comments into consideration...and, if necessary, extend a little forgiveness if one feels that might be warranted.

It’s a shame that we live in a world where politics and religion have us at odds with each other as human beings. When I look back a human history, that’s how it has always been. One should not be surprised at some of the post you read here. But, this is America. We can agree to disagree, without being disagreeable. We can make choices that people in other countries only dream about. Am I being naive? Have we lost our ability to think beyond ourselves? Did we ever have that ability in the first place? I wonder....

We all want for there to be healing and stability in Haiti. We all want the people to be ok and to have the aid they need. We also want at some point for the strong arm tactics of taking my hard money and giving it away to stop. We are fed up and we will not take it anymore.

I thought Pat Robertson was just narrating a story about Haiti’s past. He did not invent the story...nor did he add anything to the story. So, what is wrong with what he said? I work in Brooklyn, NY and my friends from the Caribbean also know about this story about Haiti. They said that up to now, a lot of people there still practice voodoo.

Saying that all Haitians are Satan worshippers is about as foolish as saying that all Michiganders are Muslim just because we happen to have the largest amount of Muslims living here. Just like in Haiti, we from Michigan have many other citizens as well. Irregardless, God loves all peoples...and wishes for no one to be lost in eternity. Each one must decide for himself. Christians should be praying and doing all they can to help Haitians. I am a born again Christian and am shamed by the hateful words of Mr. Robertson and Mr. Lumbaugh. They need to repent of their hateful thoughts and words.

Everyone is so into putting everybody into categories and labeling people this or that. According to some Pat Robertson represents all Christians, (He represents himself and that’s all)I don’t share my mind or feelings with him. I have a personal relationship with my savior Jesus Christ and I have to do my best to follow Jesus not Pat Robertson. If I’m pro-life (because it’s just compassion and common sense)I’m automatically shoved under the “conservative” banner. And then Rush L. supposedly represents me. (No he does not)
I don’t know the reasons that this has happened but Jesus says in the Bible “in this world you will have trouble, but don’t despair because I have overcome the world.” So we will all see trouble of one way or another. If I can help in any way, it’s just common sense to do so. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” As for the comments of two individuals let them answer for their own words, but don’t say they represent me. God bless the Haitian people. God bless us all. May his mercy be with you.

@ JLA
While you are correct that 96% of haitians profess to be Christians, 80% catholic, you conveniently don’t mention a couple of things. First, voodoo has only been credited as an official religion in Haiti since 2003. Second, roughly half of Haitians practice some form of voodoo, which makes sense since voodoo incorporates many elements of Catholicism. Third, voodoo is more prevalent in Haiti than in any other country. I am not defending pat robertsons comments or anything like that, I am simply stating FACTS. So people please, read this and be informed before you make any more stupid comments. And JLA, why don’t you actually really do some research and tell the whole story instead of clicking on the first thing that comes up on Google?

My Church has a mission in Haiti and has sent additional aid even though with the economy we have fallen on hard times ourselves.
NOBODY’S words should be taken out of context. If Haiti were still in French possession like British Honduras or our Puerto Rico or Samoa, I am SURE they would still be poor, but in a more average way and not knawing on sugar cane for sustinence.

I’m a bit confused by all this, so perhaps some biblical and/or religious scholar could help me.
Let’s say that a group of pagan Haitians did make a pact with the devil some time ago. Why didn’t God take vengeance on THEM instead of waiting a few hundred years to bring death and destruction down on their descendents - most of whom had become Christians? Is Pat Robertson saying that, no matter how honorably Christians live their lives, they are condemned because of the sins of their great-great-great grandparents? And surely even the most pious among us have ne’er-do-wells on the family tree. Any enlightenment on the concept of delayed - and terrible - retribution would be appreciated.

I’m afraid I have to drag in that old demon, “the media” again. Pat Robertson would be nothing but a cult kook who spends piles of money on air time, but for the media which constantly hold him up as some sort of authoritative representative of Christianity. It’s a slap in the face of every Christian every time the media does that. It’s like calling Rush Limbaugh an authority on Conservative doctrine. They’re rich kooks who make themselves very loud by spending tons of money on air time. If I had that much money to spend on air time, the media would call me an authority on something. Trust me, I’m not.

Just because the wikipedia told you that 80% of the country is Roman Catholic, doesn’t make it true. Have you ever been to Haiti? There are voodoo symbols EVERYWHERE (and next to no Christian symbols). So, while the demographics and census reports show “Christian”, it’s simply wrong and anyone that’s ever been there would know that. Fancy that...the “facts” (commonly misreresented as the “truth") being wrong.

Romans 14
1 Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.
2 One man’s faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.
3 The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him.
4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
5 One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.
6 He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.
7 For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone.
8 If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.
10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
11 It is written:
“ ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will confess to God.’ “
12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.
14 As one who is in the Lord Jesus, I am fully convinced that no food is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean.
15 If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother for whom Christ died.
16 Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil.
17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.
19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.
21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.
22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves.
23 But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.
Guy

@Linda: I can’t believe anyone would need to have this explained to them… but what’s wrong with what Pat said is that he’s drawing a connection between this story and what happened. He’s saying (in not so many words) that it’s all their fault. Teutonic plates shifted and killed 200,000 people because of voodoo. And even if you do believe such utterly classless, hateful nonsense… as the article points out… 96% of those 200,000 people were Christians.
