After almost a month of teasing gamers with brief snippets of game play footage of the Modern Warfare 2, Activision and Infinity Ward finally released the full length trailer of their highly anticipated military-themed first person shooter.
Originally shown during the televised broadcast of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, the two minute long trailer can be seen online all its high-definition glory over at Gametrailers.
The trailer utilizes Russian-accented voice overs in tandem with explosive footage from the game -a style highly reminiscent of the one used in Infinity Ward’s trailer for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare during E3 2007.
While the footage shown does not elaborate on specific points of the plot, we do know that the game’s story revolves around combating the threat posed by Russia’s new ultra nationalistic leader, Vladimir Makarov--an associate of the primary antagonist of Call of Duty 4, Imran Zakhaev.
You no longer play as “Soap” MacTavish (though he does make an appearance in the game). But you do take control of a member of Task Force 141, an international collation of special forces soldiers designed to counter Makarov.
Interestingly, while Call of Duty 4’s game play revolved more around black-ops assassination and urban street fighting, Modern Warfare 2 seems to have a heavier emphasis on counter-terrorism.
Quite a few scenes show full teams of police or counter-terrorists coming under fire behind riot shields at an airport, and on more than one occasion we see terrorists either opening fire into crowds, or taking hostages with suicide vests strapped on.
Modern Warfare 2’s campaign will take you everywhere from the tundras of Russia to the deserts of Afghanistan to the densely populated streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Additionally, the trailer depicts an all out siege on a castle-like fortification. Some new vehicles, including “Little Bird” helicopters and helicopter gunships, are revealed in these scenes as parts of the assault, but it is currently unknown whether you will be able to actually pilot and use them.
Activision and Infinity Ward’s decision to premier the trailer for Modern Warfare 2 during a sports event instead of a video game like E3 (which is only a few weeks away) is interesting, but appropriate given the franchises mainstream appeal.
Call of Duty 4 is still one of the most popular games to be released with a combined sales record of over 10 million as of June 2008.
No new details concerning the multiplayer aspect of Modern Warfare 2 have been announced yet, but with E3 right around the corner, we can only hope that Infinity Ward and Activision have something up their sleeves to keep us impressed.
Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It is set to go on sale on November 10 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
