The downloadable version for Marvel vs Capcom 2 was supposed to be available on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live today, June 29th.
That was, after all, what Marvel said in their May financial report. Video game retailer Gamestop even briefly had the game scheduled to be released for that date, before abruptly pulling the listing earlier this week.
However, according to a statement made on Capcom’s Twitter account, gamers should not expect to be able to play the classic arcade fighter anytime too soon.
In fact, Capcom tells us the official release date for Marvel vs Capcom 2 has been pushed back until sometime near the end of July.
“[Marvel vs Capcom 2] is not actually coming out on June 29, sorry guys,” Capcom posted on Twitter. “Not sure where that rumor came from.”
The relationship between video game developer Capcom and the popular Marvel vs Capcom 2 has been turbulent for years.
After becoming a hit sensation in arcades in 2000, Marvel vs Capcom 2 enjoyed a warm following on the Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 2 and Xbox gaming consoles.
However, shortly after they went on sale, it is rumored that a licensing dispute between Marvel and Capcom caused Capcom to abruptly halt all publication and distribution of the game.
Since then, it has been rumored time and time again that Marvel vs Capcom 2 was set to either be re-released or become a high-definition remake like Capcom’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.
For months, Capcom adamantly refuted the validity of these rumors, denying that they had any plans for the aged fighting franchise.
But then, in April, Capcom officially announced that they were going to release a port of Marvel vs Capcom 2 on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 as a downloadable purchase for $15.
Marvel vs Capcom 2 allows gamers to select three iconic characters from both Marvel or Capcom franchises, then duke it out against another player, either online or offline.
In earlier versions of the game, most of Marvel vs Capcom 2’s roster of 56 fighters had to be individually unlocked. For this version, though, the entire library of playable characters will be immediately available.
Though Marvel vs Capcom 2 was not sold on store shelves for very long, it still enjoys a massive following, particularly in professional gaming circuits.
Additionally, with copies of the fighting game widely unavailable to the public but still in high demand, used copies of Marvel vs Capcom 2 are regularly seen on Ebay for as much as $70.
Our Take
Well, that sucks. Just goes to show you you can’t believe everything that you read on the Internet.
In other news, someone might want to go check up on Marvel. I know release dates are always subject to change, but I get the feeling that Marvel and Capcom aren’t exactly on the same page.
At the very least, it seems strange that Capcom waited for months to come out and tell us that Marvel had it wrong all this time.
