Lebron James disses Orlando Magic after playoff loss

King James walks off the floor without congratulating Eastern Conference champs, brushes off media

Tim Weaver

King James? More like King Baby.

On Saturday, the Cleveland Cavaliers lost game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Orlando Magic, 103-90, a loss that prematurely ended an otherwise storybook season for the Cavs. Orlando will now face the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals beginning on Thursday, June 4th.

Immediately after the game ended Lebron James left the floor. He did not stay to congratulate the Magic on their victory, or to shake hands with any of them.

James went to the locker room, put on a pair of headphones, and then ducked out of town without speaking to reporters, leaving his teammates to answer for Cleveland’s 3rd round exit.

The next day James told the Associated Press that he wasn’t trying to disrespect the Magic. “It’s not being a poor sport or anything like that...If somebody beats you up, you’re not going to congratulate them,” James said. “It doesn’t make sense for me to go over and shake somebody’s hand.”

The incident is reminiscent of the time when Isiah Thomas, along with his teammates on the Detroit Pistons, walked off the floor without congratulating the victorious Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals.

Several media outlets have criticized James for his behavior, and the team for handling it, most notably Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Wojnarowski writes: “Here’s the question: Who has the guts to tell him that he sounds like an immature, self-absorbed brat? ... It won’t be Cleveland Cavaliers ownership, front office and coaches. It won’t be the NBA. It won’t be Nike. And it sure won’t be those childhood sycophants who surround James and tell everyone what a brilliant businessman LeBron is because they can answer the phone when corporations call for a famous pitchman. LeBron doesn’t want to win more than Michael Jordan did, but Jordan could stop and shake a winner’s hand.”

As of this time the Cleveland Cavaliers have stated that Lebron will not be punished for skipping postgame interviews or for walking out.

Our Take

Not cool, Lebron. Not cool at all.

You are more than just an ambassador for the game of basketball and a global icon. You are the most prominent athlete of our generation, and you’re making us look very, very bad. At a time when Millenials are facing accusations of immaturity and childishness in an already challenging workplace environment, our most beloved star is acting like a petulant seven year old throwing a tantrum.

Lebron James has absolutely no reason to act bitter. The Orlando Magic defeated his team, straight up, and they deserve his recognition. I followed the Cavs the entire season and was 100% behind them throughout the playoffs, but when I heard about this incident I was shocked and deeply disappointed.

Lebron needs to apologize to the Orlando Magic, the NBA fans, and to the world at large for his unacceptable behavior. Period.

It’s only basketball. Kids should learn how to behave from their parents, not some sports star. I do not blame him for walking off. He has a warriors mentality--- kill kill kill your competition without remorse. You do not instantly switch that off. LOL I use to do the same thing in league ball, matter of fact I wouldn’t even shake hands before the game. My mindset was kill kill kill. Our society teaches boys to be wimpy. Feminization of the american man is killing society.

I saw the magic in Dec and was impressed by their team play.A one man band such as James no matter how good cannot beat a team such as the Magic. In my book Kobe has the same problem. Orlando is going all the way to the championship.

I think that LeBron was just frustrated. Yeah it would have been nice for him to shake their hands, but hey they just lost to a team that they have beat many times in the Regular Season. I think LeBron had every right to be mad. (he really doesn’t have anyone helping him out.) Like he said it was just his competitive side. He was definitely not trying to be disrespectful. No one should even talk about this. Its just not that important.

get real lebron fans. that was totally disrespectful to the magic.  the two previous series cleveland won the other opponent shook their hands in defeat. they wanted to win too. but i guess prince james is not the king after all.  GO MAGIC!!!!

I have total admiration for Michael Jordan...for his awesome basketball skills and love of the game as well as his professionalism off the court. Although Lebron is an excellent player, he will NEVER be like Mike off the court. He acted like the kid he is. Probably could have learned a thing or two about losing with dignity if he had played college ball. BTW Ashleigh, the Magic beat the Cavs more often than not in the regular season. Regardless, his actions showed immaturity.

OMG… everyone should grow up.. this is normal in most cases… obviously because Lebron is a superstar.... it’s a big deal… what if it was someone like.. Popeye Jones, would people care?
of course not.. the point is… don’t be a huge critic and pointing fingers like we are holier than THOU.. when all these !@#$ is going on around the world… Black killing blacks, poverty, homeless. and much more.. just move on and go to more important matters in life.

what’s childish is the people who blows up small things like this.... HECK i suppose this is far more important that the recent shooting around my neighborhood killing 2 teenagers… WTF.

Diss? memo to corny white people, the word isn’t used anymore. Stop trying so hard to be hip.

it is just the competitive side of Lebron… It is not cool for everyone I guess but not everyone is raised like you do Mr. Weaver. No offense meant but judging a person is much worse than not shaking hands when you lose. Your thoughts Mr. Weaver?

I don’t remember seeing him walk off the court after games he won. Lebron’s got no problem making the guys he just beat up shake his hand, but it goes the other way and what happens?

Some interesting comments- nate, of course it’s not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things that Lebron disrespects his opponents. I just think it’s not unreasonable to expect that a guy getting paid millions of dollars a year to play a game should at least act his age.

eric- I’m terribly sorry that I can’t be as hip as I’d like to be. I wake up every day very disappointed that I’m not up to date on my street vocab. Can you recommend a better word?

JM- I don’t think it has anything to do with how Lebron or I was raised. Pretty much every NBA player congratulates the other team at the end of the game and it’s considered unprofessional not to do so.

If this were just about competitive spirit, then Lebron would never shake the other team’s hands after a loss, but he normally does. Lebron knows what he did wasn’t cool and my guess is that after the sting of the loss wears off he’ll apologize.

Lebron is an immature sore loser who believed all the hype ( from ESPN especially always calling “king” ) and therefore he didn’t think that he could ever lose this season and miss out on the NBA finals.
This man...um , this little boy will never be like Michael Jordan and will now face a tough reaction from the fans and especially from the media in the next few months - if not years - for his childish behavior.
Your life and carrer are about to change for the worse , kid.

I think the fact of the matter remains that Lebron, as an ambassador of the game of basketball, should have showed more class than that. Can we blame him? Yes and no. Yes we could beat on him over the fact that he acted rather inmature and disrespectfully by not congratulating the winning team and then skipping town, but then you gotta remember, he is a warrior, albeit a YOUNG one, but a warrior nonetheless. He will learn and grow from this experience and become better because of it. Nobody is perfect. You live and you learn.

To Everyone:

If I had to chose between going to see Kobe or Lebron, I would see Kobe.  Having said that, consider this. Seeing Lebron walk off the court without congratulating the Orlando Magic increased my respect for him.  It was a statement of ultimate disgust for loss and a strong signal for a vicious return come November.  Remember, he’s a WINNER.  He’s familiar with “winnin” protocol.  I hope he never makes an adjustment to a “loss”.

lebron james puts his heart into the game of basketball. this is not little league anymore...they beat us bad, we did not play our best. lebron has played on the same team as many of the players that he played against in the playoffs… so he likes to win. so do i. still love the cavs...not sure about the shaq though...worried about where lebron will go after the next season..
