If you are the anchor of a major political segment on CNN, chances are you should probably go ahead and watch what’s airing on your program on the days you’re not there. Just on the offhand chance that you’re own program debunks you.
Otherwise, Jon Stewart, comedian and host of “The Daily Show”, is probably going to rip you a new one on television and make you look like a complete idiot.
This was a lesson Lou Dobbs, anchor of the editorial commentary and discussion program “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” learned the hard way when he made the mistake of continuing to question the legitimacy of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate...three days after his own show debunked these accusations.
On July 17th, anchor Kitty Pilgrim, who was filling in for Dobbs on “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” firmly established that numerous sources, including a non-partisan political fact checking organization, Factcheck.org, the Republican governor of Hawaii, and local Hawaiian newspapers, proved that Obama was born in Hawaii.
However, on July 20th, Lou Dobbs chimes in with this: “There’s a lot of questions [concerning Obama’s birth certificate] remaining and, seemingly, the questions won’t go away because they haven’t been dealt with.”
On a segment on “The Daily Show” devoted to the non-troversy, Stewart incredulously exaclaimed “Do you even watch your own network?!”
Evidently not, Jon. Evidently not.
The legitimacy of Obama’s birth certificate, which proves whether or not he was really a natural born American citizen, has been contested by a group of people colloquially known as Birthers.
According to Gawker, Birthers believe that Obama is not the legitimate president of the United States because he wasn’t born in America. However, these accusations have begun to shift as more evidence emerges that Obama was, in fact, born in the United States.
Some Birthers say that Obama’s birth certificate is a forgery. Others still persist that Obama is really a citizen of Indonesia or Kenya, or, at the very least, a dual-citizen.
On “The Daily Show”, a clip is shown from July 17th of one of the Birthers who is heading a lawsuit that demands Obama’s birth certificate. Her name is Orly Taitz, an attorney, dentist and real estate agent, and she represents the Defend Our Freedoms Foundation.
The Birthers argument is that Obama isn’t eligible for presidency because of his location of birth or his parent’s citizenship, but it’s worth noting that, by their logic, a number of other American presidents or presidential nominees would also be disqualified.
Republican nominee John McCain was born at the United States Coco Solo Naval Air Station in Panama, and America’s third president, Thomas Jefferson, had a mother who was born in England. Additionally, Woodrow Wilson’s mother was born in England.
Our Take
I can’t believe anyone would name their child Orly. Orly? Ya rly. Orly? Ya rly. No wai! Ya wai! Orly? Ya rly! Coolest name ever.
Also, Birthers are nuts.
