In Brett Favre’s return to Lambeau Field--this time in the purple and white of the Minnesota Vikings--the 40-year-old gunslinger was greeted with a chorus of boos and ill-willed signs. It was the most anticipated regular season game in years, yet the Minnesota Vikings almost trounced the Green Bay Packers in the first half, scoring two quick touchdowns and holding a commanding 17-3 lead at halftime.
However, despite that shaky first half, Favre threw four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Vikings’ 38-26 victory. Favre has thrown seven touchdowns in two games against Green Bay this season.
The constant jeering did not seem to rattle Favre, who has been used to the spotlight his entire career. Favre, in a post-game conference, reasoned that “Packer fans cheer for the Packers first,” according to Yahoo Sports. “I know that. But I hope that everyone in the stadium watching tonight said, ‘I sure hate those jokers on the other side, but he does play the way he’s always played.’”
Although the Packers fought back and made it a game, the Vikings were never truly threatened. A player who stepped up big for Minnesota was Percy Harvin, the team’s first-round draft pick out of Florida. Harvin had 259 total yards and a touchdown. Harvin is quite appreciative of what Favre has brought to the Vikings.
At 7-1, the Vikings have control over the NFC North. More importantly, Brett Favre is still playing like an elite quarterback, something the Vikings haven’t had in a few years.
Our Take
Sunday’s game was a spectacle, and seeing Favre duke it out with Aaron Rodgers was fun to watch. The reaction to Favre was expected, but he got the last laugh in the end. His team is looking like a true Super Bowl contender, which is why he came back in the first place.
