More than a month has passed in the college football season, and conference games have started to occupy the center stage. But let’s take a look at some of the wildest wins of this season, and witness how the perennial powerhouses made their statements on the field.
1.Oklahoma 64, Idaho State 0
Landry Jones, a freshman who replaced the injured quarterback Sam Bradford, did a fantastic job as a first-time starter. He threw for 286 yards and a total of three touchdowns, and the Sooners blanked the Bengals in a 64-0 victory. Last year, Oklahoma crushed Chattanooga 57-2 in their home opener. Idaho State did not fare much better than Chattanooga, having -2 yards of offense in the first half and managing a meager 44 for the entire game. Idaho State didn’t make it to the midfield until 9 minutes, 18 seconds left in the third quarter. Talk about domination.
2. Texas 64, UTEP 7
All-Star quarterback Colt McCoy contributed three touchdown passes in the first half, and the Texas Longhorns extended their lead to 40 before halftime. McCoy, who struggled with flu earlier that week, finished with 286 yards on 28-35 passing. Texas put on a dominating performance on defense while keeping the offense rolling. The 64 points was the highest score for Texas since a 70-3 win over Colorado in 2005.
3. California 59, Eastern Washington 7
The Eagles struggled to hang close to the Golden Bears for one quarter, before the game turned into the mismatch that it was supposed to be. It was California’s second consecutive season opener blowout. Running back Jahvid Best rushed for 144 yards and scored two touchdowns in a stellar performance. The Bears scored the rest of their 59 points after the game was tied at 7 after the first quarter. They didn’t turn the ball over for a second straight week.
4. Brigham Young 54, Tulane 3
In playing the Tulane Green Wave, the Brigham Young Cougars got off to a lackluster start, managing merely two field goals by Mitch Payne in the first quarter. But BYU’s offense started rolling right before halftime, giving birth to a scoring spree of 48 unanswered points. Quarterback Max Hall completed 24 of 32 passes for a total of 309 yards. He tallied two touchdowns and one interception. The Cougars were so dominating that they didn’t even have to punt. They used 10 players to rush the ball and the quarterback hit 12 different receivers. BYU had possession for 33 minutes and 40 seconds, compared to 26 minutes and 20 seconds for Tulane.
5. Florida 56, Troy 6
All-Star quarterback Tim Tebow threw four touchdown passes, ran for another, and the Gators finished their “preseason” with a 56-6 rout before starting Southeastern Conference games. Florida tied a college record with its 12th consecutive victory. The Gators tallied 28 unanswered points in a 7 1/2 –minute span in the second quarter. Florida improved a lot on defense from giving up 323 yards against Charleston Southern the previous game, only allowing 139 yards to Troy in this game. Tebow’s 4-yard touchdown run marked the 45th of his career and tied him for third with former Auburn star Cadillac Williams on the SEC’s all-time list.
