Chris Brown, who was arrested some three weeks ago for allegedly beating his girlfriend Rihanna, has been receiving a surprising amount of sympathy from the public, other celebrities and--supposedly--Rihanna herself.
Many comments on a Reuters article discussing Chris Brown’s arrest were from fans, who were unusually sympathetic toward Brown.
One such commenter remarked that “I don’t think that everyone should make Chris out to be some monster. He’s a really nice guy...”
Another fan contributed to the outpouring for Brown by saying, “I do not think this young man is guilty. I think he is accused by a woman scorned. I am a woman and I know how women can be. We tend to not want to face our faults and end up losing the people we love. This young man is not a disrespectful entertainer like most. My prayers are with him and her as well as their families.”
And its not only news websites where posters have been rallying behind Brown. A slew of them have been taking to Brown’s MySpace, with fans expressing their approval and support for the troubled singer.
Celebrities are also rallying behind Brown. According to The Daily Beast, Kanye West, during a recent taping of VH1 Storytellers, pleaded withthe Culver City studio audience recently on Brown’s behalf, asking “can’t we give Chris a break?”
One of the most surprising Brown supporters may be Rihanna herself. It has not yet been confirmed, but PEOPLE magazine recently reported that Rihanna and Brown are trying to reconcile their relationship at P. Diddy’s Miami Beach mansion.
In a recent interview with Us Weekly Rihanna’s father, Ronald Fenty said of the possible reconciliation, “I love my daughter with whatever road she takes. I’m behind her win or lose. I will be supportive. If that’s the road she wants to choose, I’m behind her.”
Our Take
I suppose I really shouldn’t be surprised at the support Chris Brown is receiving. After all, other famous domestic abusers such as Ike Turner and O.J Simpson retained public approval even after conviction.
It was foolish of me to believe that Brown would receive due punishment for such a violent act. I find it very confusing that when the average-Joe is a domestic abuser, his reputation is ruined. But, oh, when some guy with a few hit songs does it, then it’s OK. Some logic, that.
