Angry Twilight purists chide replacement star on Facebook
The new Jacob Black has big shoes to fill and angry wall posts to answer
Kaitlin A. Lipe
The upcoming Twilight sequel, New Moon, will possibly have a new actor portraying werewolf Jacob Black.
It seems the production company fronting the money for the film thought the current Jacob, Taylor Lautner, was too baby-faced to play a toughened werewolf. Instead, they are optioning actor Michael Copon as his replacement to the complaints of Twilight fans.
According to TMZ, many angry fans have even defaced Copon’s Facebook page, spamming his wall with messages such as “I don’t want you playing Jacob Black in New Moon :( because Taylor is perfect” and the ever so simply stated “you’re a douche”.
A group has even been created to protest the replacement of hot dog Jacob. The online collection of Twilight purists, “I REJECT Michael Copon as Jacob Black: SAVE TAYLOR NOW!” , has a startling 1,290 members.
Our Take:
I won’t pretend I haven’t read “Twilight”, but I am not a fangirl. That being said, the movie sucked. Jacob Black as a character hardly had a role to play in the book the first time around, let alone the movie. It makes me wonder how many 15 year old girls (and possibly gay boys) are sitting at home on their parental bought desktops angrily punching keys on the keyboard to their friends going “ZOMG Jacob Black iz gunna b replaced by someone who looks JUST LIKE HIM.” It’s startling that they haven’t even confirmed his replacement and already the girlies are up in arms that some other hot guy is going to be a werewolf. *Throws hands up and storms off*

Okay, Kaitlin, you are not a fan so you obviously haven’t read any of the books. The character of Jacob Black plays a HUGE part in New Moon as well as the subsequent books. You really shouldn’t comment on something that you so obviously know absolutely nothing about.
By the way...I’m not a 15 year old girl...I’m a 37 year old mom and mother of 2 who happens to LOVE the Twilight Saga!

I have read al the books and I was actually hoping that they would replace Taylor-as much as I loved the books and the whole story line centered around Jacob and Bella I was totally disappointed at Taylor’s portrayal of Jacob. So going against the flow and also a fellow twilight lover/supporter I am all for replacing him to make sure the film is way better this time around.

In response to Jennifer, I have read the books. This has to do with the movie, not the book and it is my belief that they are two very different things. I’m not bashing the Twilight series, but merely the teen girls that don’t seem to understand that the production company only wants the movie to turn out in the best way possible. Copon (who looks much older) would be a better fit because he is older looking, rather than baby-faced Taylor who would have to be digitally altered to fit the aged look the werewolves have in the New Moon. Thank you for your comment (and your proper grammar), but perhaps its a bit wiser to read before you make abusive comments. I read Twilight to better understand its fans, I would appreciate it if you read my work carefully so you can understand my take. Thank you.

Wats up with all the die comments? Whats wrong with him wanting a JOB? And obviously if he or anyone other than Taylor is chosen, is for the best. I hated Kristen as Bella, but will they replace her? NOOO! Cause thats MY opinion. Geez pple, ITS HOLLYWOOD!!! Have our ideas been wat matters, we would all be directors. And BTW remember all of the hate on Robert? Pshh, let them do their job and quit your bitching. Michael Copon is hawt, and by his looks alone makes Jacob Black a lot less annoying ^_^

As much as Taylor did good as Jacob, I think looks wise Michael looks like the older version of what Jacob should be. The answer isn’t concrete yet so I don’t really think it’s fair for all these people to go on a hate parade against Michael. I support Taylor as Jacob right now, but if he isn’t chosen I’m not gonna go cry about it jeebus....where’s the hate for Steven Strait isn’t he someone everyone else wants to play Jacob too? And yes Michael’s hot… in pics and in person!!! And I totally remember the hate for Robert for playing Edward....so to all those Michael Haters....calm down.....sheesh…

Dear Kaitlin,
Did you read any of the other novels in the series? Jacob ends up being a HUGE part of the story. Without being a spoiler....you can’t imagine how huge. So, this character’s portrayer is very mportant. That is why we “fangirls” are so vocal about who plays him. I had questions about how they would make Taylor turn into the 6’8 werewolf he is destined for, but if they can make Sean Astin look like a 3 or 4 foot hobbit in Lord of the Rings, I think they can make Taylor into his destined 7 foot something werewolf frame.
Let’s give him a chance…

Since it is teenage girls who in large part made Twilight the books, and Twilight the movie, a huge success, I think it is less than polite to criticize their ability to choose the actor who would best play a key character such as Jacob Black. The production company is mostly led by men and with Chris as the new male Director it could quickly become cast with characters that look good doing CGI stunts or standing still but cannot carry the intense dialogue, emotional expressions or have that critical spark with Kristen which made Twilight such an immense success. Sorry but men see things differently and 9 times out of ten tend to take out the most romantic scenes leaving us with yet another action movie destined for the torrent bin. Another point which should strengthen Taylor’s case is that he is in the first movie and did a great job! He is now forever etched as Jacob in the minds of many, myself included, and that is important. I personally loved Taylor as Jacob and think that he brings that perfect innocence to the part. Jacob is a character which Stephenie took pains to create as a warm and comfortable and very different sort of person that Edward is - and they nailed this when they chose Taylor. Like I said, he had chemistry with Kristen Stewart or they would not of chose him in the beginning - and that is a key factor no one is mentioning. Catherine chose well and made sure her lead actress was comfy with the lead male stars - this needs to be taken into account before someone new is brought in.

taylor should definately be jacob, he worked so hard, hes gained 19 pounds and promises to gain another 10 before filming...i have nothing against michael and as much as it pains me to say, he would actually be a good were-jake but taylor would be better and he deserves it waaaayy more xx

Personally, I think that if they hire a new actor for the role, it should be someone who is actually native. I mean, Michael Copon has a Filipino-American father and a German-American mother. Yes, he does have some similarities to Taylor Lautner which is probably part of the production company’s reasoning, but he doesn’t really look native. I also will point out that I’m not fond of the fact that Lautner discovered/announced his native ancestory right around the time of his casting. Yes, it is believable that he could have native ancestors and I wouldn’t doubt that he does. But, it felt very convinent (though it isn’t his fault that they gave him the part). And as it seems from the books that Jacob probably is atleast half-blood (probably full-blood or almost), he doesn’t quite look the part either. Some people might feel that he is an amazing actor and say that as long as he can act the part, it doesn’t matter if he looks it. Yet it does. There are native actors that can act well (in both the U.S. and Canada) and the effort put into finding one wasn’t as extensive as it could have been.
Hollywood has been this way for awhile now. We have white actors in Asian roles. Then there’s the misconception that actors with ancestery from Asian countries can be used interchangably. But the reality is that their characteristics (other than the ones that became stereotyped) generally are different. Now we are misscasting native roles. There’s something wrong with these things.
Having said all of that, I will make mention of the fact that I myself am white and my ancestors all came from Northern Europe. So, this isn’t even an issue of me being sensitive of my own race, but rather respect.
So, in my opinion, if they were to recast the part the role would best go to a native actor who can act.

Kaitlin, whoever you are...the POINT a lot of “Twilight” fans are trying to make is that by the actions Summit has been taking (booting Hardwicke, questioning previous actors to reprise their roles and only giving “New Moon” $50 mil for the sequel!) makes “Twilight” fans SERIOUSLY nervous about what Summit’s true intentions are. We are trying to save something that we truly believe in. Taylor is Jacob for a thousand different reasons and there is absolutely no reason WHY Summit cannot front the money to create an older-looking Jacob. I think Copon has rubbed everyone the wrong way as well. He has no right making claims based on either assumptions or fact when Summit hasn’t even come forward to tell us what the heck is going on. Copon is arrogant, selfish and a HORRENDOUS actor. So, think twice about writing your crappy opinion next time.

They should have kept Taylor for New Moon, however if they think that someone like Michael can play the part better they could have casted him for the eclispe and breaking dawn..

jandira, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal that Kaitlin accidently didn’t put the apostrophe in her ‘response’ to a comment. If it was in the article itself (which I actually thought you meant at first) then it would be a bit annoying. Infact, in the article she does write ‘it’s’. She was merely stating her thoughts, which are actually the same way alot of other people are thinking. And if you bother to acknowledge the post above you that aren’t just repeating what you said in your first post (but in other words) you might realize that people actually do agree with her opinion and don’t feel that her article is horrible. And that’s their opinions and they all basically stated them in a way that wasn’t rude. Just because a person has a different opinion than you doesn’t mean that you should attack them. And this is coming from a Taylor supporter. On a different note, I do kinda agree with Angie. They should have casted a Native American actor from the get-go and if they do recast it should be a native (Even though I would rather they didn’t recast now).

I have never liked Taylor for the role of Jacob Black. I would not mind if he’s replaced. But I do not want them to cast Michael. He has some nerve. I have listened to and read about his interviews on this matter and he constantly insults Jacob and his acting ablilities. This Michael guy is as arrogant and stupid as anyone I’ve ever seen!

Jandira, while I don’t agree with Kaitlin either I hate to tell you that “its” can be a contraction but not always. It’s is a contraction for “it is” or “it has” BUT “its” without the apostrophe is a possessive pronoun and is used correctly by Kaitlin. It so sad that you just made a complete ass out of yourself.....

Candice - cute of you to stick up for your friend. But I was replying to the SAME comment that she wrote, in response to someone else. UGH. And her “ARTICLE” is not horrible, Candice. Her article is great. It’s her opinion that’s lacking. And as far as my “opinion” goes...she is a thoughtless, talentless writer, who should pay more attention to what she is putting out there.
Candice...you are just annoying.

Duh - read Kaitlin’s post again (below)...after she attacks her readers for making grammatical errors in (...) she makes her own grammatical error by saying...”...its a bit wiser” no Kaitlin..."it’s a bit wiser”
that’s all I was trying to say. If you make a grammatical error I wouldn’t give a f***...but if you accuse someone else of doing something...you should probably not make the same mistake. Here it is:

Jandira, I have to correct you. I never even met Kaitlin. I just have respect for others. And what I took out of her comment was that she was actually thanking Jennifer for using proper grammar but just thought that some of the things she said sounded harsh. So, if you really want to become a nitpick about grammar and spelling, let’s look at you. Hey, you didn’t spell you name with a capital J in all of your posts; let’s waste an hour posting comments about how horrible your comment is. That sounds rediculous and why waste the time on something that really doesn’t matter. Seriously though, she’s a reporter. She’s reporting on something that half the people on the internet are and she’s giving the same facts as them. Just because her opinions are different then yours doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t give her any respect.

conclusions:
1. Summit making sure Taylor has enough fanbase to carry the movie since he will get more screen time than Rob. This “he’s too short” and “he’s too baby-faced looking” business don’t make sense! let’s see.. Hagrid! any one? and madame maxime?? oh yeah! benjamin button? those can easily be resolved!
2. Michael copon: willing victim. he’s in a win-win situation. he may or may not get the part BUT all these publicities? good and bad, they are still publicities. i’ve never heard of his name my entire life! but look at him now? he’s on willing victim just riding the wagon of fame. (seriously, he’s not famous). so if he’ll get the part, it’ll just be an icing on the cake for him.
3. Writers: more than happy to make snide comments to get people visit their pages and get more hits.

I hold no hostility to this copon guy. and feel sorry that so many people are being so cruel. its not his decision to make, and if someone came up to me and asked me to play i’d probably say “hell yes!” even though i cherish the books and the movie and me acting as any lead is a severely bad idea! but who would want to pass up such an oppoturnity.
i personally adored lautner as jacob and do hope they decide to keep him on, but its not my place to abuse an innocent person over it!

Oh, it’s all just too rich! I’ve read all the books and saw the film. Sympathy aside, can none of you dewey-eyed girls see the obvious? Lautner is ALL wrong for this part, no matter how much you claim to adore Shark Boy. He’s a baby! I don’t care if he packs on enough pounds to rival Oprah and juices himself w/enough steroids to make Hulk Hogan wince, it won’t change the fact that he’s too short and too young. Jacob is HUGE and looks 25 -by all descriptions I’ve read in the books. Are we reading the same books here? As for Copon, the guy’s a real ass. What happened to Steve Straight? Didn’t any of you chicks see hims as Warren Peace in Sky High? Whoa! and not a jerk!

No chemistry between Kristen and Taylor. Sorry fangirls. He was adorable in twilight, but not in the succeeding sequels. They need someone who would equal Rob when he dominates the screen in New Moon. It is a triangle people! I guess Michael Copon would do justice. Steven Strait is also good. Let’s be more open-minded on this. Taylor will always be second best when the three of them will pose on the premiere of New Moon. Let’s stir up the competition, besides you hated rob before, remember? cheers!

Taylor IS Jacob. He really is a great actor. He’s the best Jacob out there. He’s read all the books, he can quote them in inteviews, and he did he research on Jacob Black.
And, I don’t see how it is “startling” that the majority of Twilight/Jacob/Taylor fans are already makeing a deal about it. Because I think we need to make our voices heard before its to late. And I just think this Michael Copon guy is not right for the part (Cause Taylor IS Jacob) and he’s really rude and trying to be cocky about it.

Steven Strait would be a better Jacob than Michael Copon, he’s a great actor and looks like an older Taylor Lautner, but I’m not really that fussed… as long as the character is portrayed right, who cares?!
As for all the people who are saying they won’t watch the next 3 films if Lautner isn’t in them.... GET A LIFE!!! You must bigger fans of the actor rather than the books!!!

hey kaitlin, what the??*forget the grammar people*.
If you dont like twilight && you dont care who is playing frriggin jacob then leave twilight fans alone. Are you sure we are all 15 year old(possibly gay boys)?? Well have you ever heard of twilightmoms && twiguy.
Do you people really agree on replacing taylor.Isnt it stupid to recast such an important character of a film series when the first movie is already done. && besides taylor(jacob) had only like 3 simple lines on twilight, give him a chance on new moon. Thats all people. Not trying to be rude.I hope you get what im trying to say. lmao.

>:[ coon, copon, whatever the hell his name is, can NEVER be the origional Jacob Black. i mean c’mon, Taylors face is already everywhere. huge posters, t-shirts, pins, everything. its too late. people already bought things with Taylors face on it, CAUSE HE IS THE REAL JACOB! you cant replace that. fans want, no, need Taylor. Im discusted that people would even THINK of replacing him. Taylor is Jacob and thats final. if michael whats his face ends up being jacob, im not gonna see the movie, buy it, or anything.
