Resume skills statements

Writing a resume can be a difficult task.  There are several aspects to consider that make the process such a bothersome undertaking.  After all, this is the first impression to be made from a potential employee to a potential employer. You want your resume skill statements to be as potent as possible

In your mind, you try to think of what the company needs, and how you can fulfill those needs.  And still, the words you use must be meticulously chosen for your resume skills statements need to present yourself in the best possible light while maintaining an honest depiction of what you are capable of.

Meanwhile, the bills are piling up as your endless job search continues.  The sense of doom is increasing in your mind, and you might begin to wonder if you should start applying for jobs you held when you were sixteen… the kind of establishments that will hire anyone because of a quick turnover rate.  No! Don’t find yourself in that place!  Calm down!  Release your stress ball now!

Driving yourself to an early grave with worry and frustration won’t help. First of all, the wealth of information at the click of your mouse, or the browsing of your library, is enormous.  Also most computers have resume templates in one or more of their writing programs.

You just have to fill in the spaces which seems relatively easy yet what words do you fill the spaces with? Resume skills statements.

Knowing what to write is essential.

The best approach is to sit down and consider what you have to offer the company.  Hopefully if you are sending a resume, you have already established that you do have something to offer the employer.  Make a list of what you can offer, qualities you can turn into resume skill statements: Integrity, hard working, honesty, flexibility.

Now, generally, a list of words like these are commonplace when people are writing their resumes.  Everyone is using this list, and, although those words are true of yourself, you will want to state these traits in a unique way for your resume skills statements.

Think of one skill at a time, and then use that skill word to its fullest potential without being dishonest

Being creative is essential, but also you need to be persuasive.  You are trying to convince your prospective employer that they need you.  For a resume skill statement, you want your words to be as potent as possible.

For example, if one of your essential characteristic traits is hardworking, illustrate that this is true. Give strong examples by finding a section in your resume suitable for the illustration.  In my resume, under my education section, I made a resume skill statement saying that I had paid for 95 percent of my college tuition myself in getting my associate’s degree.

This showcases that I worked and went to school full time, which aptly shows that I am hardworking and determined to reach my goals.

So get creative without lying, and then illustrate your personal traits that you think the employer will be impressed by in a unique and specific way.

Another tool you can utilize in writing a resume is an objective sentence.

Often found at the beginning of a resume, this is a skill statement telling your potential employer what you hope to get out of the job.  This is a good place to start proclaiming how you will benefit their company.

As an example of an objective resume skill statement: seeking a position in the custodial arts where my skills of cleanliness and organizational talents will be essential.

In an objective statement, write about experience you have as well.  Use every section of the resume to showcase a skill or some experience you have.  If you can find a suitable way to fit it into the name section, I say go for it!

Remember: when writing about your skills, use language creatively, but not dishonestly, and be as clear as possible. Even in this uncertain job market, your resume will stand out above the rest.
