Applying for internships can be very overwhelming. It can be even more stressful when applying for an internship abroad. With so many steps and required documents, you may not know where to begin. Here are some things you may need when starting the internship abroad application process.

  • Completed internship abroad application form: Whether you are applying through your college/university or an online service, such as GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, you may be submitting the form online. Find out your school’s method.
  • Application or program fee: If you apply through an online internship abroad service, you may be required to submit an application fee. If applying through your school, there most likely will be a fee for the internship/study abroad program you choose.
  • Current official transcript: If you happen to be a first-semester transfer student, submit your most recent transcript from your previous school.
  • Cover letter and résumé
  • Two letters of reference: These can be written by employers, academic advisors, professors, etc.
  • Passport and/or passport-size photos: Some services or schools may not require you to submit a copy of your passport. They may instead ask for appropriate-sized headshot photos. Confirm with your school or internship abroad service to know what is necessary.
  • Sophomore/Junior standing: Some schools require you to be at least a junior before applying for an internship abroad. Others allow you to apply as a sophomore. Check with your school to find out.
  • Minimum GPA of at least 2.5: Depending on the college/university, some require you to have a minimum GPA of at least 2.5 while others want at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Visit your school advisor: Check with your advisor to make sure you have completed all of the required courses before applying. Also, verify that your potential internship abroad is worth academic credit.
