Avril Lavigne got hitched

Lavigne married Nickelback front man in South of France

Avril Lavigne, the self proclaimed “princess of punk” (excuse me while I stop to laugh), married Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger in an intimate ceremony in the South of France on Monday. The couple claims they paid homage to their home country (Canada) by getting married on Canada Day( although it seems that Canada might have appreciated the gesture more if they’d thrown that very expensive wedding within its borders, but I digress).

Avril Lavigne, known for her wife beater/tie couture, not knowing how to pronounce David Bowie’s name (no need for pesky knowledge of musical legends), and her catchy but terrible music, met Kroeger in the recording studio where he was working on her upcoming album.

Kroeger told reporters of dating Avril Lavigne, “We met while recording music in March. But we started dating July 1, so I’ll let the math speak for itself there. We think it’s very cool that our anniversary will always be on Canada Day. We can’t wait to start our life together. We’re very happy.”

So happy, in fact, that Kroeger popped the question after only six months of dating. He proposed to Avril Lavigne with a 14-carat diamond ring. Avril Lavinge described the proposal to Ryan Seacrest, saying, “I had been making this scrapbook of my time in the studio. I walk over and he had taken a photo of himself holding the ring box and put the Polaroid in my scrapbook. Because I had stickers everywhere he put in ‘Will you marry me?’ It was really romantic and kind of made sense.” (Romantic maybe. Appropriate for a 38-year-old man, no.)

In any case, the wedding went off without a hitch and a small group of 50 guests partied like rock stars all night long. The wedding festivities started on Saturday, but the actual ceremony didn’t happen until Monday. An insider told the press, “It was a wild, all-night party with drinking, dancing, incredible food and lots of laughter and tears of happiness. It was a truly amazing wedding, absolutely magical.”

Avril Lavigne, who has been married once before (to Sum 41 front man Deryck Whibley) and previously dated Brody Jenner, described her wedding as “black-tie fairytale” and planned everything herself. This is the first marriage for Kroeger.

Tips for an awesome summer road trip

Grab your gear and hit the road

Summer has arrived and it’s time to hit the road. Instead of lounging by the pool, pack up the car and head for the highway. Here are some essentials for having a safe and memorable college road trip.

1. A fun destination- Whether it’s a hot tourist spot or someplace off the beaten path that you’ve always wanted to check out, use the freedom of summer to finally make the trek. Make sure you have a map (a paper one), a full tank of gas (and some emergency cash, as well) and plan your route. Give yourself enough time for pit stops and any random and fun roadside attractions you might happen across.

2. A travel buddy (or two) – Rustle up a few good friends to come along for the ride. Not only is traveling in a group safer, but who wouldn’t want to spend time with great company? Plus, everyone can pitch in for gas and snacks to keep costs low.

3. Pack lightly- As hard as it might be to head out into the sunset without all of your worldly possessions, bring only what you need. Depending on the length of your trip, pack only the essentials. That means you don’t need your giant makeup bag and multiple wardrobe options. Fit everything into one small travel bag. Also, make sure you have your cell phone (as odd as it sounds – as most of us are permanently attached to our electronic devices) in case of emergencies and keep someone back home in the loop as to where you are. As unlikely as it is, no one wants a fun summer road trip to turn into a “The Hills Have Eyes” scenario.

4. Appropriate footwear- Flip flops are the ultimate summer footwear and great for long car rides, but make sure you bring a pair of sturdy outdoor shoes as well. You never know when you’ll happen across some awesome place to explore that might require a little hiking.

5.  Great music- Have everyone going on the road trip make a play list of their favorite tunes and alternate between them. If it’s going to be a longer trip, don’t dismiss your car’s radio. Between classic radio tunes and personal favorites, you’ll be setting the soundtrack to your summer fun.

A road trip combines all of the best qualities of a great summer outing: Great weather, fun music and outdoor adventures. So, hit the road and celebrate.  There’s nothing better than making new memories and there’s no better time than summer to do it. Combine these tips with a good group of friends, a sense of adventure, and you’ll be set for summer- just don’t forget the camera and the sunscreen.

Jessica Simpson gives birth to baby boy

Happy couple wlecomes Ace Johnson

Jessica Simpson, former pop-singer turned reality superstar and fashion maven, gave birth to her second child over the weekend. Jessica Simpson and her fiancé, Eric Johnson, welcomed a little boy, Ace Knute (pronounced Ka-nute) Johnson, who was delivered via a scheduled c-section.

Jessica Simpson’s rep confirmed the happy occasion, saying, “Ace Johnson has arrived! Mom and baby are doing great. Jessica, Eric and Maxwell are thrilled to welcome the new addition to their family.”

Jessica Simpson, long  known for being unlucky in love after her divorce from 98 Degrees member Nick Lachey, dated John Mayer and Tony Romo before meeting Eric Johnson, a former NFL player. Jessica Simpson and Johnson got engaged in 2010, but in the midst of wedding planning, the couple found out they were expecting their first child. The little girl, Maxwell Drew, was born in early 2012. Mere months later Jessica Simpson announced she was pregnant with her second child.

Jessica Simpson, who won the hearts of millions with her ditzy, but lovable behavior, accidentally announced the sex of her second child during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel earlier in the year. The birth of Ace Johnson must be a high-point in the year for Simpson, as her parents are in the midst of a nasty divorce battle (which includes bombshell rumors that her father, a former Baptist minister, is really gay, that her mother planned a possible murder-suicide after finding out, and that Joe Simpson had taken out a very, very large life insurance on Jessica Simpson). Simpson has long been the breadwinner for her family, raking in hundreds of millions of dollars from her fashion line as well as an endorsement from Weight Watchers.

Regardless of the drama, Jessica Simpson fans are waiting for their first glimpse of baby Ace. There’s been no word on whether he will debut in a magazine spread or on Jessica Simpson’s Instagram account.

19 firefighters killed in Arizona wildfire

Deadliest day for firefighters since 9/11

19 firefighters were killed in Arizona on Sunday. The 19 firefighters, known as “Hotshot” firefighters were an elite crew of first responders who are trained to hike deep into the wilderness with chainsaws and bags filled with other equipment to build lines of protection between the fire and nearby towns and people.

The fire began in the small town of Yarnell, Ariz. due to a lightning strike and quickly spreading across 2,000 acres due to high temperatures and windy conditions. Most of the town has been evacuated and more than half of its 500 structures have been destroyed.

One Yarnell resident, Don Mason, told reporters, “I don’t know if my home’s standing or not, but from what I’ve heard, most of Yarnell has burned to the ground. So it’s been tough.”

Even tougher is the tragic end to the 19 firefighters, 18 of whom worked for the Prescott Granite Mountain Hotshots. Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo was devastated by the loss of his men, telling reporters, “We grieve for the family. We grieve for the department. We grieve for the city. We’re devastated. We just lost 19 of some of the finest people you’ll ever meet.”

The crew of “hotshots” was attempting to protect themselves under fire-resistant shields, but the blaze was simply too powerful. “One of the last fail-safe methods that a firefighter can do under those conditions is literally to dig as much as they can down and cover themselves with a protective — kind of looks like a foil type, fire-resistant material — with the desire, the hope, at least, is that the fire will burn over the top of them and they can survive it,” Fraijo said.

This is the deadliest occurrence for firefighters since 9/11 and the deadliest wildfire incident ever. The blaze in Yarnell has not been contained at all and has now spread to 6,000 acres. Four more “hotshot” crews are headed in to fight the blaze and officials are hoping that the incoming rain will help quell and contain the wildfire.

As for now, the names of the victims have not been released. An investigation will be launched into the tragedy once the fire is contained.

Independence Day sequel moves forward without Will Smith

Fans excitment was short lived when director Roland Emmerich announced they couldn’t afford Will Smith’s paycheck

“Independence Day” fans who have eagerly awaited the confirmation of a sequel for nearly 20 years rejoiced, but they’ll be disappointed to learn that Will Smith will not be starring in the “Independence Day” follow-up.

In an attempt to save face director Roland Emmerich told reporters “Will Smith can not come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It’d be too much.” (Correct me if I’m wrong, but big-budget action stars are usually what make these types of movies box office gold, no?)

Will Smith starred in the original “Independence Day” which was released in 1996. Since then he has become an A-list actor and recording artist, even garnering Academy Award nominations for “Ali” and “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Despite the fact that the “Independence Day” sequel will most certainly have an outrageous budget (given that its predecessor has made nearly $1 billion and is one of the top-grossing films of all time), the studio apparently can’t match the $20 million + paycheck that Will Smith now commands when starring in a film.

There is no word on when the Independence Day sequel will be released, but Emmerich confirmed that the majority of the original cast (including Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum) will be returning. Plot details are also scarce, but it is known that the movie will take place 20 years after the original and that D.C. will be the intended target.

It’s hard to imagine an “Independence Day” sequel without Will Smith. Who else will lead the film in punching aliens and welcoming them to earth (or “Earf” if you are to believe Google search)? Let’s just hope it isn’t Vin Diesel.

Texas Tech bull statue gores teenager

Boy dies in freak accident in Lubbock, Texas

The Texas Tech community is mourning the death of 14-year-old Miguel Martinez, who died in a freak accident on the campus over the weekend. Martinez, along with his mother and two friends, visited the National Ranching Heritage Museum which is located on the Lubbock, TX campus.

Around 3 p.m. on Sunday, Martinez and his friends were goofing around and playing outside when Martinez took off running across the courtyard of the Texas Tech campus. In an outrageous accident, Martinez tripped and impaled himself on one of the Texas Tech bull statues.

Martinez’s mother is understandably still in shock at the tragic freak accident that claimed her son’s life, telling reporters, “He just happened to trip over one of the lights. I guess he lost his balance and he went straight down on one of the horns. It’s hard for all of us. No mother expects this to happen to their child.”

Ambulances were called to the scene, but Martinez passed away before they arrived. Martinez’s friend, only identified as Jeremy, told reporters that he spent Martinez’s final minutes by his side. “I just laid there beside him. I put my jacket over him and just held him tight and told him I loved him,” Jeremy said. “He was like a big brother to me.”

A Texas Tech spokesperson confirmed the sad event but released no other statements. The Texas Tech bull statue that pierced Martinez’s chest now has cards, candles and flags with prayers and thoughts of condolences at its base

The Wolf of Wall Street trailer : utterly ridiculous and absolutely intriguing

Scorsese and DiCaprio’s fifth collaboration tackles the story of real-life Wall Street tycoon Jordan Belfort

The Wolf of Wall Street trailer was released last week, giving audiences a glimpse of what they can expect from the most recent collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie is based on Jordan Belfort’s memoir “The Wolf of Wall Street” and if the book is any indication of the finished product of the film, it’s going to be several hours of DiCaprio as Belfort being impressed by his own success and reveling in being a terrible husband, father and colleague.

In the early 1990s Jordan Belfort became a real-life Gordon Gekko when he founded the brokerage firm, Stratton Oakmont, and was eventually arrested for securities fraud and money laundering. He was sentenced to federal prison and ordered to pay over $100 million in restitution to his investors. However, it’s what he did in the interim, when he was “The Wolf of Wall Street” that has made him notorious.

According to The Wolf of Wall Street trailer, Belmont made $49 million dollars when he was 26-years-old—a sum he found unappealing. The trailer shows DiCaprio partying, taping thousands and thousands of dollars to a woman’s body while being cheered on by friends, throwing thousands and thousands of dollars into a wastebasket, throwing money off a yacht, throwing cocktails in the bushes, throwing what appears to be a lobster at an FBI agent, showing off some incredibly awkward dance moves while in a tuxedo, beating his chest in tandem with Matthew McConaughey and tossing a dwarf at a mocked up target in his office. Yes, that’s right. Dwarf tossing.

It’s hard to imagine that a movie can get any wilder, but here’s hoping Scorsese included the real-life incident where Belfort, against the advice of the captain, crew and passengers of his yacht (formerly owned by Coco Chanel), sailed into a vicious storm, sinking the vessel off the coast of Sardinia and having to be rescued by the Italian Special Forces.

Regardless of the ridiculousness of The Wolf of Wall Street trailer, it boasts an all-star cast and it’s directed by Martin Scorsese. It would be hard to go wrong with those odds in its favor.

Nik Wallenda tight rope walks across Little Colorado River Gorge

World-famous tigh-rope walker completes death defying stunt he’s dreamed about for decades

Nik Wallenda, the world-famous high-wire artist, performed his latest death-defying feat when he crossed the Little Colorado River Gorge in Arizona over the weekend. Spectators looked on and a Navajo Nation ranger and an emergency crew were positioned at the bottom of the canyon as Nik Wallenda crossed the gorge without a safety harness.

Nik Wallenda, 34, is a seventh-generation high-wire artist and has been performing with his family, known as the “Flying Wallendas,” since he was a toddler. Several of Nik Wallenda’s family members, including his grandfather and uncle, have died during falls while performing. Despite the risks, Nik Wallenda carried on the family business, earning his seventh Guinness world record after crossing Niagara Falls.

Traversing the Little Colorado River Gorge had been something Nik Wallenda had dreamed about since he was a teenager and teaming up with the Discovery Channel, Nik Wallenda was able to achieve his personal goal. He wore a microphone and  two cameras ( one facing down and one facing straight ahead) as he crossed the quarter-mile, 1500 foot high canyon during “unpredictable” winds that reached more than 30 mph during his 22 minute trek. Nik Wallenda can be heard praying during the entire crossing and twice he had to crouch down on the 2-inch steel cable when the wind blew dust into his contact lenses.

“It was way more windy, and it took every bit of me to stay focused the entire time,” Nik Wallenda told the Discovery Channel crew after the harrowing walk. Nik Wallenda was overall pleased with the crossing, but others were not.  A small group of Navajos and Hopis protested the stunt, claiming the area was sacred to Native American tribes and not the appropriate place to publicly gamble a man’s life.

Either way, Nik Wallenda beat his own personal record and is planning bigger and better feats in the future.

Nigella Lawson's husband appears in London police station to accept citation

Fans still concerned for Lawson’s safety despite husband’s dismissal

After an investigation by Scotland Yard, Nigella Lawson’s husband, Charles Saatchi has been issued a citation by the London Metropolitan Police. Although not named by the police, a statement was released, saying “This afternoon Monday 17th June, a 70-year-old man voluntarily attended a central London police station and accepted a caution for assault.”

The trouble began last week when Charles Saatchi publicly strangled his wife, Nigella Lawson, on the patio of a restaurant. No one came to her aid, instead taking pictures and selling them to a British tabloid. Nigella Lawson can be seen looking terrified as her husband strangled her and then sitting and crying after Saatchi left the scene. The Mirror published the photos on Sunday, causing mass outrage (probably not for the people who witnessed it first-hand and sat around sipping their Malbec and snapping photos) and concern for Nigella Lawson. It wasn’t the first time alarming photos of the duo had been published, and Saatchi is known for not being the nicest man.

However, once the photos hit the presses, Scotland Yard launched an investigation and ultimately decided to issue the citation, which is doled out for minor crimes (Ok, London, since when is domestic assault a petty crime?). Saatchi arrived to receive the warning (which requires the guilty party to admit to the offense), as not doing so can lead to arrest and more severe charges.

As for now, Nigella Lawson has vacated the couple’s home along with their children, but Saatchi still claims that the event was blown out of proportion, telling reporters, “There was no grip, it was a playful tiff. The pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place. Nigella’s tears were because we both hate arguing, not because she had been hurt,” he added. “We had made up by the time we were home.”

“Playful tiffs” don’t usually involve blocking someone’s airway, but for now, Saatchi is free and facing no further charges.

Nigella Lawson strangled by husband in public

Scotland Yard investigating possible domestic violence

Nigella Lawson, celebrity chef and internationally-known domestic goddess, was involved in a terrifying and embarrassing domestic dispute in public. Nigella Lawson and her husband, über-wealthy art collector and advertising executive, Charles Saatchi were dining on the patio of his favorite restaurant when a dispute broke out. Customers and passersby witnessed Saatchi grabbing and choking Nigella Lawson.

Despite the fact that Nigella Lawson was being physically assaulted, no one intervened or called for help (just another sign that humanity is doomed) but instead took pictures of the incident and sold them to a British publication. Charles Saatchi then left the restaurant and waited in the car while Nigella Lawson sat crying at the table, attempting to compose herself before rejoining him outside.

Nigella Lawson had a varied career in journalism before catapulting to fame with the release of her best-selling cookbook “How to Eat” and her television show “Nigella Bites.” Nigella Lawson struck a chord with millions of viewers with her zest for life, love of wine and her completely casual approach to cooking and writing. She was married to journalist John Diamond before his untimely death due to throat cancer. She married Charles Saatchi in 2003.

This is not the first time Charles Saatchi has been caught displaying less-than-stellar communication skills, as previous photos have shown him covering Nigella Lawson’s mouth with his hand. Despite the seemingly abusive relationship, Saatchi denies any wrongdoing, stating, “About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella’s neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasize my point.” Saatchi also claims that Nigella Lawson cried not because of his violent actions, but because she hates fighting with her husband.

Whatever the truth of the matter may be, Scotland Yard is now investigating the incident.
