Why 11-11-11 is So Significant

November 11th, 2011 is unique in so many ways.

1) Today is Veterans’ Day. Celebrating veterans all over the country, the holiday was established in 1918, when an agreement between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month that ended World War I. Today we honor everyone that has serviced in the armed forces for protecting us and the ideals our country stands behind.

2) Today has been declared Nigel Tufnel Day. In a tribute to the 80s movie, “This Is Spinal Tap,” the guitarist in the movie, Nigel Tufnel, shows off his amps with dials that go up to 11. 11 is one notch higher than the typical 1-10 amps, making his amps premium. Musician and Spinal Tap fan Michael Fennelly pushed to declare this day to celebrate his favorite movie.

4) There’s a superstition  about making a wish on the clock when it turns 11:11, either AM or PM. No one knows where the origins of this came from but the idea has still managed to spread all over. Today, people can make a wish on 11-11 at 11:11am or pm.

Black Friday 2011: The Craze Begins

Walmart has released their Black Friday deals with doors opening up at 10pm.

Walmart has head-started the Black Friday deals of the year with their announcement that the store will open at 10pm on Thanksgiving with electronics going on sale at midnight.

Between the $1.96 dvds to the $10 Crock-Pot, Walmart’s attempt to lure customers earlier this year just might work in their benefit.

According to Dan de Grandpre, CEO of dealnews.com,“Thanksgiving night openings are much more common now.”

The act in retailers creating longer hours stems from the higher amount of customers that participate in Black Friday. Retailers understand that they have to compete with the option of shoppers not even leaving their homes and opting in online shopping.

Grandpre says that Black Friday doesn’t always mean good deals, sometimes it’s just a trick to attract customers and that it is not a pleasant time to shop, meaning you should aim to purchase big ticket items like a TV or gaming system.

Are you going to leap into the chaos known as Black Friday or are you sticking to online shopping? Let us know.

Penn State Scandal: Support for Paterno or Victims?

It seems like the Penn State Community is torn in a decision on who to support.

The Penn State Scandal has been all over the news in the past couple of days. What started off with an announcement for Joe Paterno to retire due to alleged sexual accusations against his former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky has escalated to a national outcry.

Players, coaches and staff are looking for the support of the program from the Penn State Football Letterman’s Club, according to USA Today

Tim Sweeney, President of the football alumni club stated in front of media Thursday afternoon, “No one person is bigger than the program, but the legacy of Paterno is something the former players are willing to stand up for.”

While most of the country has their own opinions about the firing of Paterno and the alleged child sexual abuse, the Obama administration will only comment on in relation to the victims.

White House spokesperson Jay Carney said, “The President’s thoughts and prayers, and all of our thoughts and prayers, are with the victims of the abuse and the family members of those victims.”  Carney would not, however, comment on the firing of Paterno and said “We’re not going to get into the decisions made by the university.”

Meanwhile, Penn State Alumni has began raising money for the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization. In the efforts to bring the focus back on the victims and to help the community, the Alumni has raised over $75,000 so far. This is a drastic contrast from the Penn State students that rioted after the announcement of Paterno’s dismissal, resulting in an over-turned television news van and chaos in the streets.

With all the news coverage surrounding this situation, it has brought up many conflicted thoughts about who we should be focusing on in the situation. Should we be thinking about the victims, Paterno and his involvement or the Penn State players that might suffer because of the loss of their head coach? Does supporting one side mean that you can’t support the other side?
