Kanye West is Right to Be Outraged by Jimmy Kimmel

Kanye West responds to Jimmy Kimmel’s offensive jokes with furious tweeting.

Kanye West launched an angry twitter rant on Thursday evening aimed at Jimmy Kimmel after recently being mocked by the talk show host on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Earlier this week, Jimmy Kimmel made fun of comments Kanye made during a BBC interview with Zane Lowe. The interview was then reenacted with children playing the parts of both West and Lowe. Kimmel’s ignorant and boring jokes would have possibly fallen to the wayside had Kanye not responded with multiple outraged tweets that have recently gained much publicity.

Kanye’s furious tweeting resulted in these statements, among others:

While these tweets may come as a comical and over emotional knee-jerk reaction to Kimmel’s joking, many people are sympathizing with Kanye’s outrage. Jimmy Kimmel distastefully mocked a serious interview, in which Kanye made some very insightful and truthful comments about his career, rap music and race. Kimmel poked fun at Kanye specifically for certain “arrogant” statements.  He furthermore, illustrated his own racism and the racism which plagues media representation by having a child actor play Kanye. Infantilizing? Undoubtedly.

Frankly the fact that this skit aired on national television is appalling. Do we really live in a time when it is okay to minimize and mock the achievements of a successful black man? To infantilize him and label his statements as childish nonsense? What makes the situation even more disappointing is that Kanye’s interview has serious substance and deserves to be seen, not mocked. Certainly more people have read the tweets than seen the interview. If that’s you then here is one reason you should watch the interview and take it seriously:

In his interview Kanye had this to say regarding representation and power, “We got this new thing called classism. It’s racism’s cousin. This is what we do to hold people back. This is what we do. And we got this other thing that’s also been working for a long time when you don’t have to be racist anymore. It’s called self-hate. It works on itself. It’s like real estate of racism. Where just like that, when someone comes up and says something like, ‘I am a god,’ everybody says, ‘Who does he think he is?’ I just told you who I thought I was! A god! I just told you. That’s who I think I am. Would it have been better if I had a song that said, ‘I am a n***a? Or if I had a song that said, ‘I am a gangster’? Or if I had a song that said, ‘I am a pimp’? All those colors and patinas fit better on a person like me, right? But to say you are a god, especially when you got shipped over to the country that you’re in, and your last name is a slave owner’s. How could you say that? How could you have that mentality?”

Pope Francis States that Gays 'Shouldn't be Marginalized' within the Catholic Church

The new Pope takes an accepting stance toward homosexuality, asking ‘Who am I to judge?’

In an interview with Rev. Antonio Spadaro, released by Jesuit magazines on Thursday, Pope Francis expressed an accepting view of homosexuality, expanding on the controversial comments he made in July of this year. Pope Francis sat down with Spadaro, the editor of the Civilta Cattolica, and answered questions submitted by Jesuits around the globe.

In his interview Pope Francis was openly critically of the Catholic Church, claiming that it is necessary for the church to “find a new balance”.  The Pope expressed specific criticism toward those Catholics resistant to change and acceptance. “Those who today always look for disciplinarian solutions, those who long for an exaggerated doctrinal ‘security,’ those who stubbornly try to recover a past that no longer exists-they have a static and inward-directed view of things,” the Pope stated, continuing, “In this way, faith becomes an ideology among other ideologies.”

This new Pope has become known for bluntly addressing certain controversial issues. In July, Pope Francis proved he was not afraid to ruffle the feathers of more traditional Catholics when he famously commented on homosexuality. “If someone is gay and he searches for the lord and has good will then who am I to judge?” the Pope stated in a news conference. He went on to say, “They shouldn’t be marginalized. The tendency (to homosexuality) is not the problem … they’re our brothers.”

In his most recent interview Pope Francis expanded on his previous comments regarding homosexuality. While the Pope holds to church doctrine he continues to advocate compassion, mercy and acceptance in regard to homosexuals within the church, projecting a more blatantly humanist view of the controversial topic. During the interview the Pope asked, “Tell me, when God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person? We must always consider the person. Here we enter into the mystery of the human being.”

These accepting comments have come as a surprise in light of the Catholic Church’s general disapproval of homosexuality and the disdainful comments of the previous pope who described homosexuality as, “a strong tendency ordered toward an intrinsic moral evil,” and an “objective disorder.”

Pope Francis has proposed a more humble approach to the judgment of others, claiming that religious leaders must leave room for God. This humility was illustrated when Spadaro asked the Pope to describe himself. Pope Francis replied, “I am a sinner. This is the most accurate definition. It is not a figure of speech, a literary genre. I am a sinner.”

The “new balance” Pope Francis seeks for the Catholic Church appears to be centered around the needs of the people. In his interview he stated, “The people of God want pastors, not clergy acting like bureaucrats or government officials.” While these comments will surely meet criticism, they come as a great comfort to many Catholics eager for change.

Movie Loving Muggles Everywhere Celebrate Harry Potter Spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find T

A new film series by J.K. Rowling will allow readers to return to the magical, wizarding world.

J.K. Rowling will be making her debut as a screenwriter, with an upcoming film centered on one of Harry Potter’s textbooks “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the book’s author, Newt Scamander. Rowling published the book in 2001. It is supposed to be Harry Potter’s first-year, magizoology textbook, published in 1918, complete with the young wizard’s margin doodles. For all of you muggles unfamiliar with the term magizoology, it refers to the study of magical creatures.

The film series will center around the character Newt Scamander. Kevin Tsujihara, Chief Executive Officer of Warner Bros. announced the partnership with Rowling. Warner Bros., responsible for releasing the Harry Potter films, hopes the series will encounter similar success. The seven Harry Potter films released between 2001 and 2011 stand as the highest grossing series of all-time, reeling in a whopping $7.7 billion world-wide.

According to a statement released by Rowling, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel or sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world … Newt’s story will start in New York seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”

Warner Bros. first suggested the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” film series. Not wanting to see the series in the hands of another screenwriter, J.K. Rowling agreed to take on the project. Rowling commented, “The idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realised by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it … As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.”

Devoted Harry Potter fans, having also spent a great deal of time in the fictional universe, will undoubtedly be familiar with many of the magical creatures featured in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”.

Former Florida A&M University Football Player, Jonathan Ferrell, Killed by Charlotte Police Officer

Russell Kerrick faces charges of voluntary manslaughter.

After surviving a late night car crash and escaping his wrecked automobile, 24 year old Jonathan Ferrell attempted to find help at a nearby Charlotte, North Carolina house.  Ferrell was then shot to death outside the home early Saturday morning by Charlotte-Mecklenburg law enforcement.

For the victim’s family the death came as an inexplicable tragedy. According to police, Randall Kerrick, the officer responsible for Ferrell’s death had no legitimate reason for shooting the victim. Kerrick is charged with voluntary manslaughter, a felony. He was released Sunday on $50,000 bond.

Police say they responded to a 911 call placed by a homeowner who claimed a man, Ferrell, was knocking incessantly on their door. When police arrived at the scene of what they believed to be a “breaking and entering” situation, a man fitting the description of the “suspect” ran toward them. After one officer unsuccessfully used a Taser on Ferrell, another officer began firing at the victim. Ferrell died at the scene from multiple gunshots to the chest. Police chief Rodney Monroe made a comment to CNN, saying, “It was a pretty serious accident.”

However, for the family of the victim this incident was more than a serious accident. Willie Ferrell, the victim’s brother, told CNN, “We are going to file the necessary legal actions to ensure that we get the answers that this family deserves, that America deserves. This was an unwarranted, inhumane shooting.”

Chris Chestnutt, the Ferrell family attorney, still has many questions of Charlotte police, “Why was this officer even with a badge and having a gun? What are the policies and procedures? What is the training that would allow the officer to act so irrationally, so inhumanely?” he commented to CNN.

Race is a very relevant topic in the ongoing investigation. The president of the NAACP in Charlotte, Kojo Nantambu, stated that there is, “a tradition in this country to be able to kill innocent black men.”

Jonathan Ferrell formerly played football for Florida A&M University but was in the process of transferring schools to be nearer to his fiancé. The victim’s mother, Georgia Ferrell, says she forgives Kerrick and continues to pray for him.

What a Treat: Britney Spears’ New Single “Work Bitch” Enjoys an Early Release

Britney’s new single is released after being leaked early Sunday.

“Work Bitch” the latest single by artist Britney Spears was scheduled to be released Sept. 16. However, to the delight of Britney fans, the date of the release was moved up to Sunday afternoon after “Work Bitch” was leaked early Sunday.

Spears tweeted on Sunday afternoon, “Woke up today and saw that a low quality version of Work Bitch had leaked.” The tweet also featured a frowny face, expressing Spears’ dissatisfaction with the leak of her newest single. Spears, known for her quality pop singles, such as the classic “Baby One More Time”, understandably felt quite frowny face over the whole debacle. Britney’s manager Adam Leber urged fans, “Please do your best and try to restrain yourselves from listening for a few hours until the actual mastered version airs on radio.”

Leber’s request came as a surprise to many music fans who have often found themselves wondering why Britney doesn’t just cut it out already with this music stuff. However the star’s newest single reveals her enduring dedication to hard-work. “Work Bitch”, co-written with Will.i.am and Anthony Preston, is clearly a testament to the positive results of a good work ethic. The lyrics list the many benefits enjoyed by hard-working individuals: “You want a hot body? You want a Bugatti? You want a Maserati? You better work bitch. You want a Lamborghini? Sippin martinis? Look hot in a bikini? You better work bitch.” And who doesn’t want a Bugatti, Maserati and Lamborghini proudly displayed in their driveway as shiny testaments to their hard work?

The single, considered by many to be a smashing dance hit, features beats by DJ Otto Knows. It is not only a testament to the pop star’s work ethic but also to Britney’s new-found status as a “bad bitch”. As her new single states: “I make the governor, call me the governor. I am the bad bitch, the bitch that you’ll never know.”

She makes the governor call her the governor? That sounds downright confusing. Does she make her mom call her mom? We may never know. But one thing is certain, we can all look forward to Britney Spears’ collaboration with Miley Cyrus on Cyrus’ upcoming album “Bangerz”. The single promises to both please and offend music lovers everywhere.

The Girl Can’t Make it Twerk: Miley and Her Man Part Ways

In a shocking move, Miley unfollows her fiance Liam Hemsworth on Twitter.

On Sept. 14th Miley Cyrus made waves by unfollowing her fiancé Liam Hemsworth on Twitter. This bold move facilitated by social media could only mean tragedy for the young couple who were engaged to be married. A source close to the pop star told Hollywood Life, “She unfollowed him to send him a message that she is serious about being done this time.” Obviously, everyone knows that Twitter means business.

Rumors have been flying that Hemsworth, a renowned hunk and general dream-boat, is guilty of cheating on his twerking wife-to-be. Hemsworth was reportedly seen canoodling with Mad Men actress January Jones at a pre-Oscar party. He has been accused of sexting the actress as well. Women everywhere hold their breath in anticipation of photos leaking in what could be the most celebrated sexting scandal to date.

The romance between Cyrus and Hemsworth began in 2009 on the set of The Last Song based on a novel of the same name by author Nicholas Sparks. The split has come as a great shock and disappointment to preteen girls and middle-aged women across the globe. This Hollywood break-up is considered specifically tragic by fans, given the couples’ fairy tale beginning.

However, sometimes breaking it off with a grade-A heart-throb is easier tweeted than done. The couple has reportedly been on and off for some time now, modeling almost every romance between twenty-year-olds ever. A source commented, “Every time they fight Miley tells everyone that she’s done for good and then she takes him back.” Will Miley and Liam work things out or will the relationship be relegated to “wrecking ball” status? This has yet to be seen.

Meanwhile, Hemsworth still follows ex-fiance Miley Cyrus on Twitter in what could be interpreted as the desperate attempt of a heart-broken man to win back his twerking pop-princess.

Costa Concordia Salvaged from the Coast of Giglio

Can the Costa Concordia, a ship two and a half times the size of the Titanic, be successfully salvaged?

The Costa Concordia is being pulled from its underwater resting place, near the island of Giglio, in an unprecedented maritime salvage. Over a year has passed since the large vessel ran aground and sunk near a small island off the coast of Italy. The ship, which ran aground in January of 2012, killed 32 of its 4,200 passengers.

The Costa Concordia will be salvaged in a process called parbuckling. This process involves submerging part of the ship before rotating it onto platforms located 30 meters below the surface of the water. Detaching the ship from the reef took a total of three hours. Sergio Girotto, the engineer behind this maritime salvage, told CNN that the operation could take as little as 12 hours, saying, “I don’t think we will continue into the night. After we start pulling we should see something.” However, salvaging the 114,000 ton vessel could take up to two days. Senior salvage master Nick Sloane expressed optimism regarding the success of the maritime salvage.

Righting the Costa Concordia has cost the cruise line $800 million so far. Normally crews would simply take apart the ship, avoiding this expensive endeavor. However, this is not an option in the case of the Costa Concordia. The ship is said to house many noxious substances as well as the remains of two missing passengers.

Russel Rebello of India and Maria Grazia Trecarichi of Italy are the two missing passengers of the Costa Concordia. Rebello worked as a waiter on the cruise ship and was last seen helping passengers evacuate the sinking vessel. Trecarichi was aboard the ship with her 17-year-old daughter who survived the disaster. Family members of the missing victims hope that parbuckling the ship will result in finding the missing remains of their relatives. So far, no bodies have been found.

The inventory of the Costa Concordia reveals that the ship is filled with substances that could have a dire effect on the surrounding environment, contaminating the waters of Giglio. The ship is housing thousands of liters of paint thinners, insecticides, thick lubricants and glue. Ten tanks of oxygen and 3,292 liters of Carbon Dioxide are also housed on the ship. Additionally, freezers which have survived the intense water pressure still house rotting foods, including: 1,268 kilograms of chicken, 8,200 kilograms of beef and 2,460 kilograms of cheese.

Salvaging the Costa Concordia is a delicate matter. Once the ship has been rotated and placed successfully on platforms, the water which has entered the vessel will have to be removed and cleaned. The ship is not expected to be afloat before Spring of 2014. The Costa Concordia will then be towed to a port and dismantled. The property of passengers will eventually be returned.

The man responsible for the Costa Concordia disaster, ship captain Francesco Schettino will face trial Sept. 23. He is charged with manslaughter, maritime disaster and abandoning a ship with passengers still on board.

A New Van Gogh is Discovered After Extensive Research

“Sunset at Montmajour” is unveiled at Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

A painting determined as the product of Vincent Van Gogh was unveiled recently at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the single largest collection of works by the Dutch master.

The discovery of the new Van Gogh, entitled “Sunset at Montmajour” was announced Monday. A discovery of this magnitude, over 120 years after the artist’s death, is hugely exciting for art critics, curators and enthusiasts alike. Axel Ruger, the directory of the Van Gogh Museum spoke enthusiastically about the discovery. “A discovery of this magnitude has never before occurred in the history of the Van Gogh Museum,” Ruger told CNN.

The new Van Gogh has been determined to be a product of the artist’s “Sunflowers” period (1853-1890). During this period Van Gogh created some of his most masterful works including “Sunflowers”, “Irises”, “Starry Night” and multiple self-portraits. “Sunset at Montmajour” is believed to have been completed in 1888, two years before the artist’s death. Two of the museum’s senior researchers, Louis van Tilborgh and Teio Meedendorp claim that the painting originally resided in the collection of Van Gogh’s brother Theo and was sold in 1901.

The painting, depicting a landscape near Arles, France, is a major discovery within the context of both art history and the art market. Previous Van Gogh’s auctioned in the 1980’s and 90’s broke records as the most expensive paintings sold at the time. “Sunflowers” was sold at 39.9 million, “Irises” for 53.9 million and “Portrait of Dr. Gatchet” for 82.5 million. Determining the authorship of the painting has undoubtedly inflated the paintings value on the market.

Experts determined the painting to be the work of the master painter after much deliberation.  Ruger told CNN that the painting was determined to be a Van Gogh only after, “extensive research into style, technique, paint, canvas, Van Gogh’s letters and the provenance.” However, the museum refrained from divulging the entire story of how the new Van Gogh came to light, claiming that it would be published in the Oct. edition of the Burlington Magazine.  Starting Sept. 24, art enthusiasts can view the new Van Gogh at the “Van Gogh at Work” exhibition at the museum in Amsterdam.

Serena Williams Makes Headlines Once Again

Williams’ comments on the Steubenville rape case

Serena Williams is making headlines over her victory in the Women’s U.S. Open yesterday, Sunday Sept. 8. After some struggle Williams defeated opponent Victoria Azarenka, making for her fifth victory at Flushing Meadows. Indeed, this famous tennis player impressed crowds, winning her final set 6-1.  However, Williams hasn’t only been making news for her success as a professional athlete and the headlines aren’t always positive.

Serena Williams managed to catch the public’s attention previously with inflammatory remarks she made during an interview with Rolling Stone published June 18, of this year.  During the interview with Rolling Stone’s Stephen Rodrick, Williams commented on the widely publicized Steubenville rape case.

“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know,” Williams told Rolling Stone. “I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re 16 and you’re drunk like that your parents should teach you: Don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16. Why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously, I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that situation, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

Williams was widely criticized for her remarks, which are undoubtedly victim-blaming despite her claim to the contrary. Within this initial comment Serena Williams made on the topic of the Steubenville rape case, the athlete not only blamed the girl for putting herself “in that situation” but also addressed the topic of the victim’s potential virginity, an issue which is irrelevant to the question of whether a crime was committed and what the appropriate sentencing should be.

These now infamous remarks came as a shock to many fans of Serena Williams who hold the athlete in high esteem as a prominent female figure.  Williams, who runs an organization supporting victims of violent crime, quickly responded to negative backlash by issuing two public apologies. For many, the first response, in which Serena Williams apologized for what was “supposedly said,” was insufficient and deflected blame. However a second apology was quickly issued in which the athlete stated, “Rape and all forms of sexual assault are completely unacceptable, no matter the circumstances.” Yet, many fans wish Williams would have made this statement in her initial comments to Rolling Stone.

Hannah Anderson ordeal

Letters, camping equipment, a DNA swab kit and other items were found in the burned house of James DiMaggio, the California man who abducted 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and killed her mother and 8 year-old brother.
On August 3rd, Hannah Anderson went missing after cheerleading practice. Her mother Christina and 8-year old brother were held in DiMaggio’s home before he tortured and killed them. Their bodies were found the next day. DiMaggio then set the house on fire before abducting Hannah and fleeing with her. The ordeal lasted for six days until DiMaggio and Hannah were spotted at his campsite in Idaho. Hannah was safe and the FBI shot DiMaggio to death.

A week later, new evidence has emerged in DiMaggio’s home. Other items found in the home handwritten letters from Hannah, used condoms, rolls of duct tape, ammunition and a gas can. Investigators would not release the content of the letters and handwritten notes.
Right after Hannah was reunited with her father and was back home safely, she shard her scary ordeal through the social media site, ask.fm, where users answer questions from other people and in most cases, complete strangers. Hannah answered questions such as why she didn’t run away, was she scared the whole time, did DiMaggio do anything sexual with her, and such. She said she was glad DiMaggio was killed and didn’t try to seek help because he had a gun and feared he would kill her and anyone else who tried to help. When asked if DiMaggio did anything sexual with her, she answered, “I can’t answer that.”

Despite the craziness of the story, many of the details just don’t add up. Hannah said that DiMaggio told her one day that he had a crush on her and if he were her age he would date her. She said it made her uncomfortable but didn’t mention it to her dad because she didn’t want it to ruin their friendship. There were also reports that DiMaggio wanted to take Hannah to Las Vegas – only her, and no other family members.
Hannah has been through a lot – losing her mother, brother and being kidnapped. Regardless, the girl’s demeanor is very calm and collected despite the horror she just went through. She shared very detailed information on ask.fm, and her audience members are complete strangers. There were also handwritten letters from her found in DiMaggio’s home. Also, phone records show that DiMaggio and Hannah exchanged more than a dozen phone calls to one another just hours before she disappeared.

The more details that emerge each day, the more difficult it is to believe that Hannah is the innocent victim in this story. For someone who just had their mom and brother tortured and burned in a house, and being abducted, she seems to be handling everything well…a little too well. The whole truth has not yet emerged, but at this point it’s not hard to believe that Hannah and DiMaggio had a casual or sexual relationship before things got out of control. If you ask me, I think she plays a minor role in the aftermath of the situation.
